Common Questions and Answers about Speech therapist for autism

speech

Avatar f tn m not the same as the therapist, but once a week, well, there are 6 other days that the speech therapist is not there, so getting homework assignments for me to do with my daughter, I find essential. And although she is not speaking so much right now, her receptive language (her understanding us) has dramatically improved, and she is communicating in other ways such as learning to point (that concept is really hard for her and it's been a struggle) and doing sign language.
Avatar n tn Echolalia is related to autism. I don't know if you can have echolalia without autism. My son is echolalic and he also can put together his own speech as well. He is age 7. It is very good that he is speaking. Does he also use Delayed Echolalia eg. pieces of dialogue phrases or words from TV or films? The Speech and Language Therapist should be able to tell you more about it. I would specifically be asking for a Speech and Language Therapist who also has experience of autism.
Avatar n tn She was assessed by early intervention (psychologist, speech therapist, and occupational therapist) and her pediatrician for autism and no one had any concerns. The speech therapist said she should be evaluated by a neuropsychologist. This is a very expensive assessment. Given the fact that she has been evaluated a couple of times do you think this is necessary? I am so frustrated, I have been trying to get her speech help for so long and have jumped through so many hoops.
Avatar n tn 3 words at age 2 is way behind in language and she would qualify for speech therapy at the least. There probably is a reason for her screaming and crying, but she can't communicate that reason to you. My daughter has tantrums really bad. I think if she could communicate why, she wouldn't have some of them. Or at least I could remedy what was wrong in some of the instances.
Avatar n tn But to be sure it might be advisable to go to the GP or Paediatrician and say that you think she is behind with her speech and communication and ask for her to be assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist. You can ask for one that is experienced in assessing children on the spectrum. The fact that her response to verbal communication is variable could also be an indication of a speech or sensory disorder which may or may not be part of an autistic spectrum disorder.
Avatar f tn Could be. Could also be a speech delay or disorder. I would ask for a referral to a speech language pathologist.
Avatar f tn Hi. I agree with the previous poster. Get a referral to have her tested for autism if you're concerned. Usually your speech therapist can raise concerns if she has any regarding your child. If no one suggested to you that she's showing signs of autism, then most likely she doesn't have it HOWEVER, I'd go with your gut feeling and have her tested. What state do you live in?
Avatar n tn thought he speech should probably be a little more clear and we are going to a speech therapist for a screening later this week. I am consumed with thoughts of autism and I am so scared what the speech therapist is going to say. I am so glad that information about autism is out there, but I feel so overwhelmed and it seems like every kid is going to do something on the "red flag" list from time to time. Anything will be helpful and I thank you in advance.
Avatar n tn go to www.northstartdogs.com, they have golden retrievers that are trained service dogs for kids with autism. I blieve the study that you are referring to in NY is the one where a woman who is a dog trainer helps the child train their dog. you can do a search on kids with autism, dogs, LI, NY and see if that links you to any of the articles. i have a 4 year old son diagnosed PDD-NOS. He had significant speeech delay recently his speech has improved tremendosly.
584252 tn?1218223686 Hi i took my daughter Melissa to see a speech and language therapist today and she said from the little test she did her speech is within normal parameters, but from what i have been saying she did say she wanted to test her at school to check her understanding. She did notice that Melissa went into her own world and that when i spoke to her i had to repeat myself quite a few times.
408443 tn?1202069828 I have talked to her doctor about most of this and he said that there is a chance she might have a mild form of autism, but not to worry and wait till she is three. I have just gotten her into a speech therapy program. I looked up autism everywhere I could online, and I didn't find anywhere the type of symptoms that she has. I don't know what to do anymore and I can't take her with me in public anywhere it has gotten so bad.
168006 tn?1241012961 He started developing his speech normally and around 18 months he completely stopped speaking. We had him evaluated for speech, autism, even his hearing and we ended up getting speech therapy for him. He had other autistic "signs" like he had a hard time dealing if something was out of place, he liked patterns and was just weird for lack of a better word. However he was always snuggly, had good eye contact, etc so they said he wasn't autistic.
Avatar m tn My grandson saw a paediatrician a couple of months ago but all the paediatrician says is that we need to see a speech therapist, and have blood tests. he has offered no other options. We have an assessment booked for speech therapy on Monday 9th February, and are awaiting the results of the blood test. We attend playgroups for developmentally delayed children and also, general soft play and toddler groups. He attends nursery two mornings per week.
Avatar m tn But the more pragmatic areas of speech (organizing thought to say what you want to say ---- expressive and taking in what someone else has said to you-------- receptive) can also be affected by motor planning. An occupational therapist evaluates for sensory integration disorder. But speech and social skills can be affected by this (and it is not autism but a nervous system issue). So, please talk to your physician and I'd start with a speech eval.
Avatar n tn We went to therapist and he has eliminated autism, brain damage, hearing impairment and all other typical things. Aside of this, my son seems quite intelligent. He understands quickly new ways to play, has very good memory, can learn song, can explain whole feature animated movie if he watched only once. But, we mainly we understand him because we watched the movie together and he uses body language and mimic together with language.
Avatar m tn for a while and she told me he is on the autism spectrum , i have also had other ppl ask me if he has autism ( a support worker for autistic kids ) but one of my family members works with autistic adults and they said he is fine , which i know he is not something is not right i have lived with him for 6 years i know him well , i am awaiting an official diagnosis i just keep thinking that i am a bad mum and thats why he is the way he is i try very hard to keep things as relaxed as possible for
Avatar f tn The speech delay and the fact that your son does not respond, at times, to his name are red flags for autism. As for the rest ... I'm assuming the specialist had more than these two behaviours which are alerts for suggesting autism. But your posting really does not include enough information "for" or "against" autism. Perhaps someone else on this site will have a better insight ....
Avatar n tn I just had him evaluated by the regional center nearby and they told me he needs to see a behavioral therapist, a psychologist, and a geneticist for possible autism or something else. I have an older son who had speech delays, but he is doing much better and at least he had an attention span where I could teach him stuff, even if he couldn't expressively communicate very well. Here are my questions, and I would be extremely grateful for any help: 1. What could this be? 2.
397435 tn?1201128125 they really cannot potty train her because of the lack of speaking. She is in special school and goes for speech but there is no improvement in regards to her actually speaking. They went for all nuerology tests and nothing is wrong, blood was all good. The question I have is anybody have any idea what this could be? Does anyone knjow why this happens? Ideas to try to get her to speak? I feel horrible. She is very smart and does interact. Just does not speak. I thank all who relies.
Avatar n tn The great news is that you have arrived at a diagnosis early and have secured intervention at 2 years. The prognosis for children with autism is much better when appropriate intervention begins early. It is important for you to realize that there is no “quick fix” for autims. Applied Behavior Analysis is the only approach to the treatment of autism that has extensive empirical support, but this approach requires much hard work by children, parents, and ABA therapists.
Avatar n tn If you are concerned about autism though, or even other things, I would make sure that when you were looking for a speech therapist that they also had a occupational therapist there as well.
Avatar m tn Have a look at the DSM IV diagnostic criteria for a diagnosis of autism. Also speak with the Speech Therapist. Make sure she has experience of speech disorders as well as developmental disorder such as Autism. She should be able to tell you if the speech and language difficulties he has are consistant with a diagnosis of being on the autistic spectrum. She is also the professional to assess for social interaction and skills.
1554085 tn?1296813380 Many children with down syndrome have the same sensory processing and sensitivities that children with autism do. The same therapies work wonders for children of both groups. If you haven't already, start reading everything you can find on sensory processing disorders. "The out of sync child" is a great place to start. Also find a great occupational therapist. I bet you will find much of the behavior you are seeing has its roots in sensory processing.
Avatar n tn THOSE ARE SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTISM BUT U HAVENT MENTIONED ANYOTHER CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTISM SO IT MAY NOT BE AUTISM.. MY SON SHOWS THOSE CHARACTERISTICS AND A FEW MORE OTHER CHARACTERISTICS BUT NOT ALL TO BE DIAGNOSED AS AUTISTIC.. HE WAS DIAGNOSED AS PDD-NOS.. BUT NOT AUTISM.. I THINK YOU SHOULD DEFINITLY GET A REFERAL TO SEE A DEVELOPMENTAL PEDIATRICIAN THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU BETTER IF SHE HAS ANY CONDITION OR MAY HAVE NO CONDITION AT ALL...
551037 tn?1214962440 has the Speech and Language Therapist definately diagnosed a delay or a disorder. A good speech and language therapist should be able to give you an indication of whether they suspect your child is on the spectrum from the kind of speech problem they have. Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum, is this what the speech therapist is referring to? You can read a good lengthy explanation of this at http:// www. hyperlexia. org/sp1.
Avatar f tn A couple months ago his pediatrician had a speech therapist come to evaluate him, and I was absolutely floored to hear that he passed. Apparently he knew about 1/3 of the flash cards that the speech therapist showed him. This makes me believe that he actually knows more words than we think, but he just won’t say them. Regardless of how hard me or his mother try, we cannot get him to say any other words! I’m not doubting the speech therapist, but I’m still quite concerned about his speech.
