Avatar n tn He didnt babble much as a baby, and not very much as a toddler, so at 2 years old I took him to a speech therapist...........now he is 4 and a half and the speech therapist just noticed that at the back of his throat his uvula is doubled, and she felt the back the top of the roof of his mouth and told me he has Submoucus Cleft Palate. We since have seen a nose ear and throat specialist and he says that my son doesnt need surgery, and should out grow his nasily sound by puberty.
738090 tn?1250622476 I have been sent to a speech therapist after I started having hoarseness. I have emphysema, acid reflux and the signs of essential tremor. The internist, pulmonologist, gastroentrologist and Ent all could not determine the cause. The speech therapist says is is because the muscle around the vocal cord has been retrained by using the PLB method and I have to relearn to work the breathing and speech in concert.
Avatar n tn I did that and my psychiatrist found after her complete evaluation that she has Expressive Speech Delay and motor coordination is not fully developed. Avatar m tn Hi, i went through exactly what you did. I felt like I couldn't breathe all the time even though the spirometer tests were normal and I was scared about it. Have you seen a speech therapist? It made a world of a difference for me. What happened is, and I know this sounds crazy, but your body has probably forgotten how to breathe. Since anxiety makes people have bad breathing patterns, even when you're not anxious, you can feel out of breath.
Avatar f tn A voice coach or speech therapist could address this. You would be smart to take care of this when you are young. This is when you need to be moving ahead in the world.
Avatar f tn I am having some issues with my tongue not coordinating correctly with my soft palate when swallowing. I have had a swallow test, neuro exam, ENT exam, speech therapist exam all with normal results. I do have a history of bad GERD and the ENT said I have some throat irritation from it. Has anyone had their GERD affect their tongue? I am scared to death of ALS right now, and am looking for some simple answers. Thanks.

Avatar f tn Hi my sister-n-law had triplets and then another set of twins. All premie's and all with delayed speech. By age 2 they all had a speech therapist work with them because of weak mouth/tongue. Within a short period of time they all had advanced in their language skills. The therapist said with some mouth exercises they have really caught up. They are now 6 and 3 yrs old.

1041487 tn?1256327719 My mom had an ischemic stroke this past August that damaged her middle cerebral artery. She is 70 and this is her second stroke in 19 years. The first stroke damaged the right side of her brain, but she recovered well enough to go back to work and live a productive life. This second stroke was more damaging. She is alert, and only stares to the left. I'm not sure if her vision is clear. Her right arm and leg are limp, and she doesn't move them.
584252 tn?1218223686 Hi i took my daughter Melissa to see a speech and language therapist today and she said from the little test she did her speech is within normal parameters, but from what i have been saying she did say she wanted to test her at school to check her understanding. She did notice that Melissa went into her own world and that when i spoke to her i had to repeat myself quite a few times.
Avatar f tn Specialists that would evaluate your son here in the states would be a speech therapist. They would give you exercises to do and help with those mouth muscles. A physical therapist would help with things like low muscle tone and walking. An occupational therapist would help with motor planning and things sensory related. I'd do some mouth games with him. Turn on some music and make silly funny faces. Then stop the music abruptly and freeze. This strengthens the facial muscles.
Avatar m tn See a speech therapist, or if it's not appealing to you, join a local toastmasters club and practice speaking. Practice makes perfect.
Avatar n tn They were getting ready to take him to surgery to put in a permanant feeding tube when one speech therapist wanted to give him one last swallowing test and he passed and was eating anything he wanted that night. So don't give up. Hopefully he will be able to eat soon...

According to the therapists, the felt some swelling in the throat area. 1) They look down my throat while I talked. 2) They wanted me to sing and hold a note but I think they regretted that one. I cant carry a tune in a bucket.
667445 tn?1230750538 His child specialist(doctor) recommends to have a consultancy from a speech therapist if we (parents) are more concerned. So, we already started this consultancy. The question is, whether is it too soon to have that type of consultancy. Is it really helpful to have a speech therapist helping the kid along or he will start speaking normally with some time. Regards to all the readers.

Avatar n tn My dad has been diagnosed with Olivia Ponto Cerebellum Atrophy for 9 years. His symptoms include imbalance while walking, very slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing. We've seen a lot of specialists around the USA and have only heard only bad news, there is no cure for this disease. My parents have now made 2 trips to China to seek alternative medicines (herbal medicine, acupuncture, laser treatment, oils. etc.
Avatar f tn s, GI, pulmonary functions, CT Scan, allegry test (allergic to dust mites who is not)..and speech therapist. None of them have been helpful. I have taken all the allergy medication, GERD, acid reflux medication, nasal spray etc..nothing has proved helpful. In visiting the speech therapist they indicated that i might be using a wrong speaking method and not using the breath support. They have put me in speech therapy exercises and i have been doing it sometime.
4619045 tn?1361132610 Hi Valerie i have experienced the same tging and brought it to the attention of my speech therapist and she had no answer for me. It is scary and it sometimes happens with food but most of the time it just does it. I am glad i am not alone in this symptom.
Avatar m tn This by the way, had to do with my doctor who thought that seeing as I have asthma I should learn how to breathe so I could talk. Unfortunately for the speech therapist, she was caught unawares and might possibly need some kind of therapy herself after having a couple of stints with me.
Avatar f tn I think a physical therapist could help and I would imagine you will need a speech pathologist as well. Might as well get on that list. In the US, we have programs that help families and their children when developmental issues are present. It is free and involves a coordinator from an agency that helps to set up all of the evaluations and treatments necessary. It runs birth to age 3. Is there anything like that in your country? Best of luck to you.
Avatar f tn I work with development delayed children if you are seeing a therapist with your child the best thing they can do for you is be your voice with the doctors we have a speech therapist that gets things done with the doctors tell the therapist all your concerns that is the best thing some parents think maybe they sound like they are complaining to people please don't think that I tell everyone you don't know unless you ask questions
Avatar n tn She was assessed by early intervention (psychologist, speech therapist, and occupational therapist) and her pediatrician for autism and no one had any concerns. The speech therapist said she should be evaluated by a neuropsychologist. This is a very expensive assessment. Given the fact that she has been evaluated a couple of times do you think this is necessary? I am so frustrated, I have been trying to get her speech help for so long and have jumped through so many hoops.
Avatar f tn They evaluate your child and look where they may need some help such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy (often employed for feeding issues of infants) and begin to set up appts. Some are in your home and some you go to their office but it is offered to every citizen to help their children. So, this is a good option for you if you are in the US. If not, do see a developmental pediatrician. Your child could have some motor planning issues or dyspraxia.
