Common Questions and Answers about Speech problems with autism

Avatar f tn There are different reasons why a child has communication/speech problems with autism being one possibility. There is also a basic speech delay, sensory integration disorder, a global delay, etc. I would say that it is time to get your child evaluated. Is a speech pathologist available to you? You could check with your primary care doctor about one to see. I also think a developmental pediatrician is a good resource if you have concerns about autism.
Avatar n tn Honestly, it sounds like "just' a speech delay. Children with autism have problems with social skills. Most have sensory intergration disorder (SID/SPD). Many do have speech delays but not all. It's just one symptom in a list of many. If you are concerned about autism though, or even other things, I would make sure that when you were looking for a speech therapist that they also had a occupational therapist there as well.
Avatar n tn Dear Doctor, I am a student from a suburban area of India and my group is tying to spread awareness among the people out here with regards to different development problem associated wiith kids of around age group 2 to 7. Avatar f tn My son is nearly 11 years old. He has ADHD with traits of Autism. He has severe speech delay which therapists believed should have been up to scratch by now. I'm just looking for advice or testimonials from other parents who went through the same thing. Did your little ones speech improve? All advice appreciated.
408443 tn?1202069828 org They have a video library of kids with autism and of kids without autism to compare, if you are concerned about autism. Whether she has autism or not, she still has issues that need to be addressed by therapists, that your state shoudl provide at little or no cost through the 0 to 3 program. My state the program is called First Steps. I think many of the states have that name. I'd really press to get more therapists on your daughter's team.
Avatar n tn My cousin has a little boy that was diagnosed with speech delay when he was 2. They were concerned when he was 1, but the doctor told them to wait at least till he was 2 and could develop more. Once he reached 2, and still was not talking then they enrolled him in speech therapy and now he talks your ear off. He is 4 now. Some children are slower than others. I would talk to your doctor or get a second opinion. At 1 years old, they should NOT go on any meds for ADHD.
Avatar n tn There are many other reasons other than Autism has he any other behaviors , drooling , what is his speech like any problems there ? Does he get sore throats maybe good to have his tonsils checked .
Avatar m tn Sometimes, an autistic child will be high functioning in some areas, but not in others. Many children with autism have problems with certain textures, and some have issues with textures at all. Talk to your doctor about these issues, since they seem to be quite serious.
Avatar m tn You really need to get him seen by a doctor. Verbal apraxia can also create problems with speech. So can a language processing disorder or an auditory processing disorder. My sister had a form of that, not autism, and had to be in speech and language therapy through 5th grade. She later got straight As in high school and college. Therapy helped immensely.
Avatar m tn About 6 months ago it came to our attention that he seemed to be speech delayed. At that time, someone at day care mentioned autism He has a bunch of cars from the movie Cars, and when he plays with them, he lines them up. He did that almost exclusively up to about 5 or 6 months ago. He still lines them up, but will spend some time playing with them more appropriately as well. (driving them, etc). He really doesnt care for many toys other than cars.

Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
Avatar n tn Theres a couple of sensory things you mention, but although sensory issues are usually present with autism there are lots of people (children and adults) with sensory stuff and they are not on the spectrum. He is at that age when he should be becoming more social, and I don't notice anything else in your post that concerns me. The ear infections may have caused a bit of a delay. And it is recognised that blind and deaf children do have some similar behaviours to autistic children.
Avatar n tn The unit my son attends is solely for kids with speech/lang no other add-on problems. I think a lot of your sons difficulties will be solved with nuture and time. Interpersonal skills and social skills are all learnt through watching and modelling others, not necessarily autism. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Going dairy free again will take 3 or more months to regain speech. This observation is from a mother of a 35 year old male with autism who lost his speech at 18 months and later regained it. Good luck to you.
727792 tn?1231227009 They must have delayed or disordered speech, problems understanding the meaning of words, difficulties following instructions, problems with expressive or receptive speech; (b) social communication. They must have difficulties with social interaction/play with their peer group.
Avatar n tn Everything else has developed normally and on time. At age 4, his doctor felt that maybe he fell on the spectrum of Autism because of delayed speech and his behavior. I took him to see a speech pathologist. She said he had receptive/expressive disorder. I took him to a neurologist, and after 15 minutes of observation, he decided that it is Autism. I was told to get myself educated on the subject. After taking my child off all milk and wheat products, I found a DAN doctor.
Avatar n tn My son just turned three years old and is not talking on a three year old level. He has just started to make two-three word sentences. He uses non verbal communication and likes to point at things. He can say and name objects around the house. He spontaneously speaks words and sentences like the A,B,C, song or "I love Mama", I love Dada". He has great eye contact. If you ask him his name and age he will tell you.

Stating that profiles like his are typical among individuals who have foind to have delelopmental delays. SLP- Speech fluency and vocal characteristics both were observed to be developmentally appropriate.
Avatar m tn An occupational therapist could help more with his aggression and sensory issues (ie dealing with different textures of clothing) than the speech therapist. Both are very important. Let us know if you get a diagnosis.
Avatar n tn In your post you have mentioned something in each of the areas required to get a diagnosis. Ie. speech - he has problems and has been seeing a speech therapist for years, social interaction - he has problems interacting with peers, and stereotyped repetitive behaviours - he spins.

574101 tn?1245537020 You also mention that there has been metabolic testing that has not come back abnormal. Though many have suggested metabolic abnormalities in persons with autism, metabolic testing is not a valid means of diagnosing autism. In fact, if one were to rely soley on genetic/metabolic testing only about 40% of cases of autism would be diagnosed and this testing would cost well over $30,000 per child (according to tiered pricing offered for genetic evaluations by qualified geneticists).
Avatar f tn I believe with the higher awareness with Autism there has also been much over diagnosis with it as well. I wonder sometimes if enough evals have been done to come to that conclusion or if that diagnosis was the easy way out...ya know? I am not knocking you by any means, parents know their children best and it is you that can help the pedi with whatever diagnosis if any! Note your child's behaviors and relax until otherwise told. Keep with the early intervention- it is such a gift!
Avatar n tn The best person to do this is a BCBA with extensive experience working with children with autism. They would likely be very familiar with the approach I mentioned. Direction following involves receptive communication and other communicative responses can be taught but a competent behavior analyst would be the best person to lead intervention. I wish you the best of luck and hope the resources I have led you to will prove to be helpful. Howard, J., Sparkman, C., Cohen, H.
