1714540 tn?1326830479 Ask for a full evaluation--------- occupational therapist, speech and psychological. If your son is having trouble in preschool, this is really important. That would mean that he may have an issue that the early intervention program can help with. If the issues are mainly at home, then that would be more of an issue of his enviroment and I would try some changes in parenting style. So, I would talk to his doctor and then ask for a formal evaluation.
5549102 tn?1376522673 s why speech therapists do not typically do full evaluations for speech until the age of three unless there are other problems. There is a wide range of normal. but I personally would watch closely. My son's speech issues were indicative of his developmental delay.
Avatar n tn That is when we first saw some signs, and he went to preschool and had no problems. It was when he started Kindergarten, when he actually was diagnosed and the problems were definitely there then. My cousin has a little boy that was diagnosed with speech delay when he was 2. They were concerned when he was 1, but the doctor told them to wait at least till he was 2 and could develop more.
Avatar n tn My daughter went to developmental preschool this past year and will be going to a regular private preschool this fall. She has made tremendous advances between the Birth to 3 program and then the developmental preschool through the public school system this past school year. She will be 4 this fall.
Avatar m tn My son has just turned four years old. My son was behind in his speech and hearing due to hearing problems at two years old we had tubes put in and they seem to be working great. We notice that he is speaking more and more, although not as clearly as other children at his age, but he is getting more clear everyday. At 2 1/2 we put him in a preschool for the first time and out of the blue he would go from a good day to being very upset andhe would just say no,no,no...Almost yelling.
Avatar f tn my son is 5 yrs old and has been in a preschool since sept. I have been recieving phone calls from the teacher for about every other wk because of his behavior problems he is not really iniciating he want to be part of the group. he can't sit still for story time, he bites his nail and always has to be doing somthing and basically is always in his own world. He bosses the children around as if he was an adult which is not good for the kids there.
Avatar f tn It involves many things and kids that have trouble with it show early to have speech issues and tripping frequently. Speech can be affected by motor planning in that it first the brain has to organize what is being said to him and make sense of it, then the brain has to organize what the response should be and then the brain has to send the signals to the oral motor muscles to articulate the sounds. All three parts are motor planning issues. Organization of thought is a big one.
Avatar f tn She just doesnt want to do their activities she want to do her own and when she want to do it. Her speech isnt that great she can form short sentences but cant carry alot of converstaions. Like " I want to see mulan" or "Mommy Im hungry". When you ask her a question she stutters a little but I understand what she tell me and her teacher arent complaining about her learning its her behavior.
Avatar m tn Hi there. Well, what a good parent you are to look objectively at your child and to have a desire to help him! Good job recognizing that there may be a problem. Speech develops at different rates for all kids for sure. Your son does seem to fall outside of normal. As he goes to 'school'--- is this a preschool? What do they say? Usually preschools are good at identifying kids with various issues. There are three parts of speech. There is articulation which is saying the words.
Avatar n tn Not easy is it this ole parenting thing, but worth it,I am wondering if he gets plenty of positive attention, and how he gets on with his sister, does he go to preschool, are there any issues there with his behavior, also get his speech checked out there may be reason there for speech therapy, ask your Doctor what he thinks.
Avatar n tn Hi, my son has sensory integration disorder which is a delay involving the nervous system. His delay started showing up at preschool when he was 3 (he's 5 now). Sensory issues are common with many neurological issues. Not sitting still and not following directions can be because of sensory. Also invading others space, crashing and bumping people, becoming easily frustrated and having meltdowns. Social problems can also be common. Motor planning can take it's toll on speech.
Avatar m tn There are three parts of speech--- articulation (making the sounds) is one we all think of with speech. but there is also receptive speech (the ability to take in and organize what is said to you so that you can understand it) and expresssive (the ability to formulate the thoughts you want to express, to organize those thoughts into words to speak). Motor planning has a huge impact on these speech componants.
Avatar n tn His IQ was in the 90th percentile when he was formally evaluated. He speech is at part with peers thanks to 6 months of speech therapy (he picked up on in lessons quite fast). He is better a initiating play, but still have trouble maintaining play when two or more kids are present. All this time we thought that he only wanted to play with the other kids a little bit and preferred to play on his own.
Avatar f tn My son was diagnosed with Speech Delay when he was three. Autism was suggested, not ruled out, and not confirmed. According to the doctors that we've seen he is where he should be developmentally. However, he doesn't usually perform as well as other children and does not deal with disappointment well. Most people tell me it's because he's a boy or because it's typical of children. He just turned 5 and had a total melt down in a karate class.
Avatar f tn i am very frustrated and worried at this point. she is receiving speech therapies at school for about 10months now. I don't see progress i need help with her pls respond.
Avatar m tn I have a 2 1/2 yr old son who has speech delay and had some intense sensory integration issues. We began speech at 18 months and was diagnosed with apraxia. Fortunately working with him daily and with a therapist he's advanced to near average. His one word ability is awesome and he's beginning his 2 and 3 word sentences. He's gotten over much of his vestibular issues and other tactile ones over time and is near normal.
Avatar n tn She has problems with social cueing and huge problems with speech and language processing. And she has sensory issues, ritualistic behaviors, and other things that are typical of autistic behavior. Anyways, you could express your concerns with your son, but in the end, they are the parents and they have to make the decisions. I have a dear friend with a son who has significant language delays (no other delays or issues, just language).
Avatar n tn Such as if she has language delays (common for autism) she might qualify for speech therapy or to go to a developmental preschool through the public school system where there is a speech therapist and other therapists to work with children. Does she have any sensory issues that she would need an occupational therapist to work with her on?
Avatar n tn From the difficulties you mention he needs to be assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist who has experience of speech disorders as well as autistic spectrum disorders. They need to assess his expressive and receptive speech, his auditory processing/auditory memory and working memory skills. The Speech Therapist is also the professional who assesses social interation and play skills. Any difficulties with language will have an effective on social skills.
Avatar m tn He had tubes in his ears at 13 months and a year later he had a second set because the first set got lodged with fluid behind them and we are not sure how long they are were like that. He just started preschool and plays with the kids very well, but he doesn't really want to take part in the learning he would rather be up playing. This is the first time he has been away from home really without me since he was born.

500419 tn?1220124743 My son had the same problem in speech at the age 3. My Dr. did not want him to go to head start are preschool. You are the mom I would do what you feel is right in your heart. My child received better speech therapy on his own. When he entered school it was not as good because he had to share his time with other children in speech and only got 10 min. each, when they told me it was 30 min. So you should find out from head start how much time does he really get.
Avatar m tn But they are at least better set up to help children with special needs, such as delayed speech and motor skills. Developmental preschool is freely provided by the public school system, provided the child qualifies. I'm starting to go through this process for my daughter who will be turning 3 soon. I am hoping to get her started the week she turns 3, so she can transition from the Birth to 3 program straight into Developmental Preschool where they will offer a speech therapist.
