543250 tn?1214743177 I forgot to say, yes Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum and is one of the Disorders that a good Speech and Language Therapist will tell you that you are looking at a probable diagnosis of autism.
Avatar m tn If he has literal interpretation of language as well you can google Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder and see if that sounds anything like your son. If it does then he may be mildly affected or have traits of autism. Does he have any obsessions or are his range of interests limited? Has he ever been seen by a Speech and Language Therapist? If not you could ask for a referal as these are the professionals who are supposed to look at social interaction skills.
Avatar n tn He also uses delayed echolalia in his speech. And he has Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder. So his speech development is typically autistic. However my son is very affectionate. It is not true that those on the autistic spectrum are unaffectionate. Some don't know how to show affection, others do. My son hugs me and tells me he loves me. Look at the diagnostic criteria, and if you still have concerns I would ask for a referal.
Avatar m tn Autistic come to mind. I wuold get her checked out that's for sure. I mean my son went through a phase where he banged his head if he didn''t get his way. BUT NOT ALL the time. And it seems like you've had problems from the get go. Talk to a doctor.
665125 tn?1273023924 They tend to have language processing problems, Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder, Literal interpretation of language etc. Those with Aspergers tend (but not always), to do better ie average to above average academically. They also tend to have obsessions and interests. Those with autism tend to have much greater difficulty with language and tend not to develop language at the usual age. They may not be verbal at all or may be delayed or have disordered speech.
Avatar n tn She needs to assess your daughters receptive and expressive speech abilities as well as assessing her for semantic pragmatic speech disorder. Does your daughter/son have any sensory difficulties? Are they over or under sensitive to sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste/texture, balance and co-ordination? If you want to look at the diagnostic criteria for autism you can google DSM IV for autism and see the list of characteristics.
Avatar n tn If he has semantic speech difficulties google Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder. But bear in mind that the loss of a diagnosis could mean he doesn't receive supports as an adult. This is only my opinion, but I want all professionals who come into contact with my son to know that he is on the autistic spectrum so that he is treated appropriately. My son is high functioning autistic and goes to a mainstream school.
Avatar n tn I am a mother of a 7 year old boy with ASD, semantic pragmatic disorder, disordered speech, auditory processing problems, auditory memory problems, sensory integration disorder, dyslexia as well as problems with attention and focus. So I know what it is like to have multiple diagnosis that overlap and make it hard to sort out the root cause of difficulties. From your post it sounds like he is trying to communicate, but can't.
Avatar n tn The unit my son attends is solely for kids with speech/lang no other add-on problems. I think a lot of your sons difficulties will be solved with nuture and time. Interpersonal skills and social skills are all learnt through watching and modelling others, not necessarily autism. Good luck.
574101 tn?1245537020 His main areas of difficulty does seem to be around speech, auditory processing, auditory processing disorder etc rather than just autism. He has also been diagnosed with Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder - which is also now considered to be part of the autistic spectrum. But he also has some abilities that more typically autistic children do not have.
Avatar f tn My son has an ASD and I suspect he also has aspects of ADD. All of my other gut feelings relating to his speech problems, dyslexia, visual problems etc have all turned out to be true. So look into the above mentioned disorders, as having any one of them will lead to enormous amounts of frustration and behavioural difficulties.
616452 tn?1253877644 Does he have Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder? Does he have Central Auditory Processing Disorder? Does he have Dyslexia? Does he have Auditory Memory Retrieval problems? Does he have Sensory Integration Disorder, Does he have poor Theory of Mind, Does he have Executuve Function Disorder, what is his Cognitive Ability? Unfortunately the more 'disorders' you discover the more support the child gets as it proves they have severe and complex needs.

973741 tn?1342342773 What types of activities can people do with older children to help with pragmatic language deficits?
635457 tn?1223222111 What is included is Speech and Communication difficulties which can either be delays or a speech disorder such as Semantic Pragmatic Disorder or Echolalia. 551037 tn?1214962440 A good speech and language therapist should be able to give you an indication of whether they suspect your child is on the spectrum from the kind of speech problem they have. Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum, is this what the speech therapist is referring to? You can read a good lengthy explanation of this at http:// www. hyperlexia. org/sp1. html (take out the spaces, I included them so it printed the web address).
Avatar m tn Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
Avatar f tn they are better at talking than understanding what is said to them. You could also look at Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder. This usually accompanies being on the autistic spectrum and it will explain why he takes language literally etc. The Speech and Language Therapist should also assess his social interaction skills and put together a programme to teach him how to hold a conversation etc. He should also be seen by an Educational or Clinical Psychologist.
9771188 tn?1405907831 Has anyone had problems communicating? I have problems with finding the right word to use. Sometimes I use I will get so frustrated. My family and friends say that I repeat myself a lot. I do know this, especially when I am excited, happy or upset. I completely lose my train of thought. I used to be able to speak in public, and train people. This has been difficult for me. Am I alone? I have battled through much worse demons than this, but I don't want to give up now.
Avatar n tn I have no idea why my post landed in the autistic spectrum area. My son is not Autistic, he seems to be very stubborn. :o) There are times when he gets what I'm saying, it depends on what it is. If he likes it he responds but if he wants to do something totally different then he will not respond or will wear out the word NO. I can ask him a question like do you want to go outside and if the answer is Yes then he will repeat what i have said or he'll say Tony outside.
Avatar n tn He may have problems other problems such as auditory processing disorder, delayed auditory processing, Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder, auditory memory or working memory difficulties. Any of those things is going to make it hard to do his work in class. So if demands are being made on him at school, and he cannot do it because of language, social communication, sensory issues he is bound to get frustrated and presently the only way of showing that is by bad behaviour.
