Avatar n tn A patient with mild hearing impairment may have problems understanding speech, especially if there is a lot of noise around, while those with moderate deafness may need a hearing aid. Some people are severely deaf and depend on lip-reading when communicating with others. People who are profoundly deaf can hear nothing at all. In order to communicate spontaneously and rapidly with people, they are totally reliant on lip-reading and/or sign language.

645800 tn?1466860955 I had submitted an appeal on the disability rating the VA gave me for my service connected hearing loss. My contention was that due to my MS / PTSD that the effects of my hearing loss were greater than the VA was saying they are in the real world. According to the VA rules if a S/C disability make some other Non- S/C disability worse it becomes also S/C. Last week I found a hearing place that tested for Auditory Processing Disorder.
Avatar f tn There are two types of speech disorders that occur in MS, dysarthrias and dysphonias. Speech problems where the motor muscle components of speech are affected are dysarthrias (these typically affect volume control and articulation) while speech problems that affect voice quality are dysphonias.

Avatar n tn I do not think your grandchild has autism, but I only have an interest in it. You say he has speech problems, but did not exactly say he has hearing problems, except you wrote "children with hearing problems can have behavior problems." Anyhow, even if it's just speech problems, and especially if it's also hearing problems, this is why your child did not do well socially at the school and why he plays his own games.
Avatar n tn i had just find out after moving that she had very bad ear infections, i had asked the doc in Indiana about it, because the same time when she started pulling her ears is the same time she stopped talking the told me nothing was wrong, when we moved i took her to a private doc and he told me she had a very very bad ear infection that had been there a while, which could have had something to do with her speech problems. i found out she has chronic allergies.
293420 tn?1243142938 I think it would be great to have a Speech/Language Impaired forum. There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this.
Avatar f tn My 2-year-old son also has Sensory Integration Dysfunction...he is also Apraxia (motor speech disorder). What state do you live in? What kinds of things is your daughter sensitive to? What kinds of strategies have you put into place? It can be really frustrating...I understand your daily struggle! I'm an SLP in the public school system and work closely with the OT at my school. I am also friends with my son's OT...her daughter is speech delayed and sensory impaired as well!

Avatar n tn My 4 year old granddaughter did not pass the hearing test in the hospital as a newborn when she was born in one ear. Whenever my daughter took her to the doctor as a baby & toddler she wouldn't hold still for the test. So fast forward 3 1/2 years later. Avatar m tn First he needs to be evaluated by a GI specialist to rule out medical problems for his feeding difficulties. He also should be evaluated by speech and occupational therapies, as he may have oral motor problems or texture aversions - and these can be treated. Second, he needs a good hearing evaluation - human speech is at a different decibel level than most other sounds and some hearing problems can impact only those decibels.

Avatar m tn There are three parts of speech--- articulation (making the sounds) is one we all think of with speech. but there is also receptive speech (the ability to take in and organize what is said to you so that you can understand it) and expresssive (the ability to formulate the thoughts you want to express, to organize those thoughts into words to speak). Motor planning has a huge impact on these speech componants.

645800 tn?1466860955 I am thinking of appealing the amount of disability as with my MS and PTSD not hearing thing good has more of an impact on me than someone in good health. To back this up I have the repost from my Neuro Psych testing which shows I have trouble with things in distracting surroundings. Avatar m tn Our 2yr 10 mon old son has not developed any speech. He doesn’t understand any instruction. He doesn’t respond to his name most of the times. He can express very limited needs nonverbally (take someone by hand and show water or cookies). He doesn’t understand pointing at things. He throws violent tantrums and bangs his head without any apparent reason. He spends most of his time running around or climbing when he has a good mood. He doesn’t have any interest in nutritious food.
