My son has scattered skills including with speech. He knows how to say "I have to pee pee" or "I have to poopie" so the speech isnt an issue in this case, people potty train nonverbal kids. I am certain I can get him to pee in the potty on a schedule but I dont know how to get him to tell me he has to go.
Avatar f tn Is it common for kids with apraxia to have behavior problems even when speech is improving and is it common for kids with appraxia to be misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder? I'm very concerned that we're going down the wrong path here, but this doctor is very determined to convince that the behavior is not related to the appraxia and instead related to bipolar.
5549102 tn?1376522673 Hi there. Well, speech is a funny thing in that kids develop it at different rates. There is a very wide range for normal. Dropping letter sounds at the beginning, end or in the middle are all different issues in relation to speech. Is he putting any words together, like two words such as 'go bye'? "me juice"? That is probably the next thing to look for besides the articulation piece. But I think at this point, I wouldn't worry.
1667595 tn?1303333906 my 4 year also had a speech delay after speaking to her pediatrician she was put into a pediatric speech therapy session twice a week for 30 mins a day it has helped her so much she has completed her therapy and is now speaking in full sentences that we can actually understand speak to your pediatrician there is alot of local county hospitals that offers this pediatric therepy and they are wonderful with kids thats all they deal with is kids with problems in speech i hope this helps you
Avatar f tn She is almost 3 now and she still likes to do her own thing. She is not interested to other kids at all. Her speech has not fully developed yet meaning she cannot put a sentence together although she sings many songs and knows a lot of words. She is not shy at all. Lately, she seems to show signs of frustration such as throwing a way her book or a toy. She has also has been pushing her brother who is 1 year old around or other kids in school in occasions.
727792 tn?1231227009 They must have delayed or disordered speech, problems understanding the meaning of words, difficulties following instructions, problems with expressive or receptive speech; (b) social communication. They must have difficulties with social interaction/play with their peer group.
Avatar f tn A person that spends there days with kids are in a good place to make observations about your daughter vs kids her same age without any bias (like we parents have). I often hear that "oh, the teacher is just trying to make things easier on themselves, they want kids to be robots, etc. etc. etc." Well, what if that teacher actually is trying to help? Then you would miss your opportunity to help your daughter.
Avatar f tn Many assume that language issues are associated with autism and they can be------- but speech issues are quite common with sensory kids and speech delays exist on their own. Social skills did not come naturally to my child. We have worked very hard teaching them to him. We did a "social skills camp" last summer. Very helpful.
Avatar m tn There are three parts of speech--- articulation (making the sounds) is one we all think of with speech. but there is also receptive speech (the ability to take in and organize what is said to you so that you can understand it) and expresssive (the ability to formulate the thoughts you want to express, to organize those thoughts into words to speak). Motor planning has a huge impact on these speech componants.
1579968 tn?1296402551 Okay, got it. I'm going to suggest that you place your name on the list to have your son evaluated by a developmental specialist. I'd urge you to try to see an occupational therapist. Not engaging with a game that is physical or otherwise would indicate that it is difficult for him and he avoids it. His speech problems go along that line of thinking as well. Don't assume he has adhd because other things like sensory integration disorder can look like that.
Avatar n tn Dear Doctor, I am a student from a suburban area of India and my group is tying to spread awareness among the people out here with regards to different development problem associated wiith kids of around age group 2 to 7. Many mental problems related to a child like autism, down syndrome, speech problem etc is our concerened area.
Avatar f tn Your pediatrician would probably have recommended that as they look for kids who struggle with speech. Early intervention can do tremendous things in helping a child. I had my sons watch my mouth when I spoke to them. I would encourage them to speak but if you push, you are right. This can lead to frustration and an internal esteem issue for the child if he really has a neurological reason for difficulty with speak.
Avatar n tn My son had speech delays as well as developmental delays. He was adopted, and has ADHD. Part of the speech problem was he talked around his thumb. I noticed he and his brother who is ADD mispronounced many words. I wasn't sure if this was ADD or neglect. I can see why ADD/ADHD can effect speech, because these children don't pay full attention to how things are said in order to copy them correctly. My son is now 11, and speaking fine.
Avatar m tn t say much. Not communicating very much has fed my speech problems and really hurt my social skills and my self-esteem, so I've decided to finally try to do something about it so I can feel comfortable making conversation with people. After listening to recordings of my speech and watching myself speak on video and in a mirror, I definitely noticed that I don't speak with very good articulation.
1664949 tn?1303075099 He goes to pre-k and his teachers love him say he is there best student. He plays with other kids but mostly by himself i think due to his speech.
Avatar m tn Hi. Some kids are more difficult than others and require so much patience. Lucky you-------- you have one of those. LOL I do to------ so you are not alone. Some kids have a very difficult time self soothing. You mention a few other things that really stand out to me as being issues with her nervous system and ability to process things.
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
Avatar m tn Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
1714540 tn?1326830479 he has trouble looking u in the eyes and he sometimes when he see people he says hi and put his hand in front of your face and he has vision problems and heart problems too when he was little he had acid refuse to really bad and he got evalute for speech and he score 8 to 9 months and he be 5 in october 23
9771188 tn?1405907831 Has anyone had problems communicating? I have problems with finding the right word to use. Sometimes I use I will get so frustrated. My family and friends say that I repeat myself a lot. I do know this, especially when I am excited, happy or upset. I completely lose my train of thought. I used to be able to speak in public, and train people. This has been difficult for me. Am I alone? I have battled through much worse demons than this, but I don't want to give up now.
356518 tn?1322263642 They both have severe speech problems and since they have been on the medicine their speech is improving but they seem like they are just drugged out to me. I have talked to their dr but he assures me this will pass. The 6 year old is extremly emotional while on it, I cut their dose to half of what the dr said and they still are not right. Any suggestions? I asked for strattara and dr says it will not work for them.
Avatar m tn Still, even if your son does not have autism, keep on top of the speech teacher. If you are still having problems understanding what he is pronouncing, have they (speech teacher and the doctors) ruled out verbal apraxia? Hopefully it is just the tubes in the ears and he will catch up. If he doesn't have speech therapy over the summer, make sure you work with him on his language and get him playing with other kids his own age who are verbal.
715552 tn?1229872258 t like when it gets changed, but honestly I thought that was because for a little boy he has had to put up with a lot of change. I notice some problems interacting with other kids. He just doesn't want to. I notice more that he wants to be with his teacher more then with other kids. His speech is also behind. He is very hard to understand. Even for me.
Avatar n tn In your post you have mentioned something in each of the areas required to get a diagnosis. Ie. speech - he has problems and has been seeing a speech therapist for years, social interaction - he has problems interacting with peers, and stereotyped repetitive behaviours - he spins.
Avatar f tn Well, some of what you mention is absolutely normal three year old stuff and some is more concerning. Kids of three do tend to want to be with their parents so his following you around is age appropriate and what most 3 year olds do at home. I would try to have something that my boys hadn't done in a while ready to go---- and would give them that so I would have 10 to 15 minutes max that they'd sit and do whatever it is that I gave him.
