Common Questions and Answers about Speech problems in 3 year olds

speech

Avatar m tn If that is off, then a speech eval. is in order. But honestly, both of my boys outgrew speech issues. They were primarily articulation, as I said, and now at 6 and 8, we have no issues.
342647 tn?1291107933 I worked in a room full of two year olds, and I agree with Joy that your daughter sounds like she's developing her speech normally. Like Joy, I think that if your daughter is older (3 or 4) and having problems with stuttering and pronunciation then you should get her assessed. My friend has a 4 year old who I still have trouble understanding. She always has to "translate" for me.
Avatar f tn Three year olds are a lot of work and some more than others. Some kids get very excited when company comes over or at a family event and do things we would . . . rather they not . . . and are mortified that they do. Some kids also have really active nervous systems and behaving the whole time in daycare can make for a long day. Some kids really do need lots of physical activity throughout the day in order to maintain their behavior.
Avatar n tn Hi. I like your usage of the word quirky as that sounds like what she is. I understand what you are saying. Something feels a little different to you about your child and you are worried about her. That is being a good parent in my opinion. I had a quirky kid also who turned out to have sensory integration disorder. Now it is hard when they are three because there is such a broad range of 'normal'.
Avatar n tn s got some sensory defensiveness issues, and also is kind of developing a fear of things in her world (normal for a 3 year old to suddenly develop fears, kind of unusual for that fear to be a younger child). When you characterize her as "very protected" - she really isn't protected. She's in day care all day long where the parents really don't know what she's experiencing.
Avatar m tn You have to have all three in place in order to have proper speech. Perhaps your son has a break down in understanding what is said to him? You can test this by giving him some simple 2 or 3 step instructions and see if he can follow them. (point to the door, turn a circle, walk to the door, that kind fo thing). He may have trouble with expression as well. And how does he sound when he does speak and artiuclate the words? Is it clear (ish . . . he IS only three).
4251679 tn?1370305531 They are happy and healty 7 year olds. They were slow to reach some milestones and have a speech delay, but they are perfect.
Avatar n tn If you live in the states, he could not be in kindergarten yet but more of a preschool type of setting. The attention span of a 3 year old developmentally would be pretty short. A preschool curriculum is usually set up into very short time slots with 10 minutes here, 5 minutes there and maybe 20 minutes on the playground. This is about all a three year old can handle at their stage of development. Not listening again is a common problem with 3 year olds.
Avatar f tn I would talk to his pediatrician right away, hearing can and will affect language development. It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.
Avatar f tn I found the info below concerning Muscular Dystrophy... it has a lot more detailed things to look for in 1-3 year olds who may have musc. dystrophy.... I don't know what else they may be looking for... wish I could help more. Said a prayer for your friend and her son. Re: Muscular Dystrophy Most affected boys show the first signs of mobility problems between the ages of 1 and 3 years.
Avatar n tn s pointing and non verbal ways, and of course, always comparing his behavior with other 3 year olds. Their pediatrician referred him to a speech therapist and that was the best thing! He has so improved in the communication department and is one of the most social and friendly 6 year olds I know. It's like he was released from his prison. And as far as the school system suggesting autism, well, I will say that a non professional giving that kind of diagnosis possibility is out of line.
Avatar f tn he says words, points to things that he wants, and if he doesnt get them, he will throw himself down, sometimes hurting himself, and start hitting anyone who tries to calm him down. my parents have 6 grandchildren and they came in twos.. two 4 year olds, two 3 year olds, and two 1 yr. olds. me and my sisters have always kept our children close, but none of the other kids want to play with alex, because he doesnt understand how to play their games.
Avatar f tn I work in a child care facility with 3-5 year olds (preschool age). I have 24 students in my class and I have one child that lately is having very severe behavior management problems. She has always had problems with behavior, but most recently it has grown worse than ever. When the children get in trouble they are supposed to go to timeout for how ever many minutes they are old. I try to put this certain child in timeout and she refuses.
Avatar f tn This is actually a pre school setting 3 days a week for 2.5 hours a day. He was in the 2 year old program last year 3 days a week for 2 hours and had no issues. Last year there were 9 children and 2 teachers, this year 18 children and 2 teachers. I personally think they are overly strict and I am beginning to realize they are not a very nurturing preschool :( Sadly, after speaking with the Director of the school, I think we may have to switch schools.
Avatar f tn 2 1/2 year olds can be diagnosed with autism sometimes, but it is rare. I think they only diagnose that if the kid is having seizures and is totally living off in their own world. I have a 2 1/2 year old where the developmental pediatrician said "let's wait and see, and we probably won't know until age 5." It's better to wait and have an accurate diagnosis than to have them jump to an inaccurate conclusion.
Avatar f tn repeating what others say is called Echolalia. it can be indicative of other problems. "Echolalia can be present in autism, Tourette syndrome, aphasia, Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, developmental disability, schizophrenia and, occasionally, other forms of psychopathology." I am NOT saying this is the case, but is a warning flag. you may want to do a search on it and see if it describes her. i suspect at least a language processing problem.
Avatar n tn How do I tell if my 3 year old is just being 3 or if their is a problem. He has a hard time in preschool listening to the teacher. He wants to do what he wants and will hit the teachedr and other children. He will do the same at home. Alot of time he smiles and wants the attention.
470885 tn?1326329037 I actually had one year olds join the class towards the end of the day, and the little girl in the one year old class would sit still for an entire thirty minute video of the wiggles, while all the boys one year olds and two year olds ran around the room.
Avatar f tn Don't jump to the conclusion that her burst of energy is ADHD. Probably a growth spurt, I know... your going to think "HUH?" But really, when young children go through a growth spurt, their sleep routine gets all mixed up, they eat much less or much more (my daughter ate almost nothing for a week or so but drank well). My 4 yr olds temperament has also changed drastically since she was 3. She's older, she understands more, she's getting much more independent, etc.
Avatar n tn The rapid mood swings are typical of what I saw in both my boys and in other normal 2 year old children we play with. The question is does he have the behavior problems (biting hitting etc) in all situations or is he normally better with someone in particular. I've discovered my 2 year old never hits or bites at preschool but at home he feels its a way to get my attention when I'm working with my other child or he does it when he doesn't get his way with his brother.
Avatar f tn s were a breeze compared to 3! One thing that happens with 3 year olds is that they have a lot to say and sometimes have difficulty doing it. They are growing by leaps and bounds with speech but as this takes time, they can become very frustrated. And they have not yet developed the skills to handle frustration and anger. So . . . they do what comes easily--------- cry, throw themselves down, and have the big meltdown.
