Avatar m tn I cant complete yawns anymore either, and i generally feel like my capacity has been reduced and it just feels like my chest is tighter. I do have an anxiety disorder, but its not only like this when im anxious. Like i said, its been going on for 3 months, and i havent even been able to get one normal deep breath like i used to in that span of time. I saw a lung specialist, did the test where you blow into the machine, and i was told my results were normal. How can this be?
Avatar m tn Not sure if this will help, but I HAD the same problem..extreme fear of speaking in front of groups. Also, anxiety. I take 12.5 mg of Paxil for anxiety and that has helped. I talk in front of groups alot. If it is really bad, I take a small dose of Xanax, and that calms me. I never took ativan. Good luck. Oh, Xanax does not effect my speaking, it just calms me abit. I don't slur or look like an idiot.
Avatar m tn But if you stuttered before, I would get that checked out to determine if it is being caused by your anxiety, depression or stress. If it started with these problems then yes, I would say it's related. Take care!
Avatar m tn t say much. Not communicating very much has fed my speech problems and really hurt my social skills and my self-esteem, so I've decided to finally try to do something about it so I can feel comfortable making conversation with people. After listening to recordings of my speech and watching myself speak on video and in a mirror, I definitely noticed that I don't speak with very good articulation.
Avatar f tn Sometimes, as you say, the feeling is barely noticeable and the anxiety level remains low, but when it gets really bad, my anxiety shoots through the roof. It is a VERY unpleasant feeling and it's all I can focus on. I've discussed this with my neuro a few times and he thinks it's all in my head................DOH! But, he also apparently doesn't think it's anything to be alarmed about, so I've just tried very hard to learn to live with it as part of my panic.
Avatar m tn Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
9771188 tn?1405907831 Has anyone had problems communicating? I have problems with finding the right word to use. Sometimes I use I will get so frustrated. My family and friends say that I repeat myself a lot. I do know this, especially when I am excited, happy or upset. I completely lose my train of thought. I used to be able to speak in public, and train people. This has been difficult for me. Am I alone? I have battled through much worse demons than this, but I don't want to give up now.
Avatar f tn Extreme tiredness, high fever, hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, high blood sugar, kidney problems causing brain fog, liver problems causing brain fog, low electrolytes, very high blood pressure, alcohol or drug intoxication, etc can all cause slurred speech. Apart from brain related causes like stroke, transient ischemic attack, brain tumor, bleed etc, it can also be due to sickle-cell anemia, Wilson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis or lead/mercury poisoning.
Avatar f tn There are two types of speech disorders that occur in MS, dysarthrias and dysphonias. Speech problems where the motor muscle components of speech are affected are dysarthrias (these typically affect volume control and articulation) while speech problems that affect voice quality are dysphonias.
Avatar m tn I do not have Sjogrens, Lupus or any of those auto-immune diseases according to my Rheumy. I would have to say the swallowing problems came first but now my speech is being effected dry mouth or not. I do this most everyday at some point or another. This started this year, it is my fairly newest symptom.
Avatar f tn Just wondering if anyone else has problems with reversing their letter. I do alot of typing at work and I am constantly having to go back and correct myself as I reverse alot of letters. I also seem to stutter...not alot but its very noticable when I do.
Avatar m tn I am a long distance runner and the first thing I experienced was SOB on high exertion. When that started (about 2.5 months ago) my anxiety peaked and I started feeling everything from chest pain to dizzyness to full blown panic attacks. My anxiety is under control, but my throat has been increasingly sore lately and my troubles with exertion are still an issue (I do not feel as in shape as I was this summer). Along with my sore throat I notice mild hoarseness..
400099 tn?1282954864 s not really bad at this point. I have to go to speech therapy to learn tips, exercises to strengthen muscles in throat, etc. Is this common with relapsing remitting MS? It's been hinted at that I've moved onto secondary progressive. Does anyone else have swallowing problems?

Avatar f tn I have been dealing with anxiety all my life. I am always amazed at what the mind can do to the body. I hav a symptom that I haven't seen mentioned before and that is slurred speech or difficulty finding the right words to form a sentence. This occurs when I have the dissociatve feelings like I'm not really in my body. Has any one else experienced this before?
Avatar n tn My symptoms seem to come on when I'm nervous or upset and then everything returns to normal----- I've never really had any true swallowing problems. I've been experiencing this since early Feb of this year. I've been to several docs who are chalking it up to anxiety problems since I have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I've had lots of other symptoms as well, but no lost of strength, atrophy, or wasting.

Avatar m tn Right now you imagine anxiety---pairing it with the speech---so counter that with strong imagination of calm confidence. Practice practice practice.
1088527 tn?1425313375 I had this test 3 yrs ago and it showed food getting stuck on right side so went to speech therapy learned some tricks. Things have changed this time for the worse the test showed that food is getting stuck in my esophagus and wont move even after large quantities of fluid. I only eat 1 meal a day because after the 1st few bites and havibg it stuck there I lose my appetite. I go to speech nxt week and see what they can do for me.
Avatar f tn One more caveat - my sister started stuttering at about six years of age and she did not learn how to self-manage this behaviour. Her anxiety behaviours were that of an anxiety disorder and she required help to deal with her fears/anxieties. I say this not to scare you but to educate others who might be reading this posting. I strongly suspect your daughter is of the description in the first paragraph. I wish you the best ....
