Probably her Na and Cl levels were affected. She was given NaCL capsules before food. That solved her problem. She is 70. She had dementia. She prefers liquid foods. Avatar f tn Bell's palsy is a form of facial paralysis resulting from a dysfunction of the cranial nerve VII (the facial nerve) causing an inability to control facial muscles on the affected side. Several conditions can cause facial paralysis, e.g., brain tumor, stroke, myasthenia gravis, and Lyme disease. However, if no specific cause can be identified, the condition is known as Bell's palsy.

I immediately got up and tried to function normally but my hubby could tell that something was wrong. I have passed out twice since then so I don't know if that was related to my stroke. I am 50 years old so. . . . Thanks and I appreciate your response !

Avatar f tn Hi, Stroke rehabilitation, or, , stroke recovery, is the process by which patients with disabling strokes undergo treatment to help them return to normal life as much as possible by regaining and relearning the skills of everyday living. It is multidisciplinary in that it involves a team with different skills working together to help the patient.

Avatar n tn On June 5th a day after my 27th birthday I had a stroke. Before my stroke I was just a normal relatively healthy 26 year old. I had an active lifestyle that included walked or running 4 to 7 miles daily. Eating healthy and organic when possible. I was rushed to the ER by my boyfriend the morning of my stroke. Prior to my realization that I was having a stroke. I felt tired, couldn't stand up straight. And was leaning on the walls to help steady myself while I walked.
Avatar f tn I had a stroke also on the left side of basal ganglia. My symptoms have been mild overall. There was a little droop of my mouth, and since then I have experienced a mild lisp --a gets a little harder to speak when I am tired. I am experiencing a mild sense of lack of motivation..and perhaps a little depression..and tiredness.. Overall I think I am doing quite well for experiencing a stroke. I hope to recover completely.. Does anyone have advice for rehabilitation? Exercises for speech..
Avatar f tn I hope you don't take this post as being negative. It's good that you are encouraged that your friend will have a full and complete recovery. But, the reality is that no one, not even your friends doctors know to what extent your friend will heal. She very well could come out of this with very little and non-noticable deficits, OR, she could have some damage. Many people think that if you can walk right and talk correctly then you've made a complete recovery.
Avatar n tn Hi, The time when swallowing ability comes back for a patient who suffered from stroke depends on a lot of factors such as the severity of stroke, the extent of damage or his body response. A swallow test involves seeing if a person can swallow a little bit of water without coughing or choking. If the person has any difficulties swallowing, they will be seen by a speech and language therapist, who can assess the problem and work out a diet that is easy to eat.
Avatar f tn can 20 years on dilantin after one seizure, then a stroke with no speech, cause terrible sideeffects?
Avatar f tn Hi Dr. Santos, Thank you for your response to my post. My mom got admitted into rehab ten days ago. All of last week, she was being assessed and doing various evaluations by the physiotherapist, occupational therapist, the speech therapist and a neuropsychology. This week, there are a few more assessments to do and then they will begin with the therapy required. She has not shown any improvements in her movement.
Avatar n tn There is also something called vascular dementia after a stroke that can contribute more problems. I understand the people who have written in where they have been helping and supporting someone and then things take a turn for the worse. My heart goes out to you as I know what it feels like. You have done the best you can by just being there and staying informed.

Avatar f tn I am a 43 yr old white female with a history of diabetes for 28+ yrs. I have seen a neurologist for about 2 1/2 yrs. I had a stroke and have been followed ever since. I have trouble with speech, memory, balance, falling (2x), right arm and leg weakness, and lately my hand shakes especially when i find i am hot. Cooling off seems to help. My EEG showed seizures frequently and i am now on medication. Please understand this did not happen all at once. It has been gradual.
Avatar f tn My mother-in-law had her gallbladder removed about 1 month ago. She is experiencing severe migraines, along with severe nausea, and the left side of her face has become numb, and droopy. The first thing we thought was a mild stroke, she was admitted into the hospital, after MRI'S, Cat-scans, countless bloodwork, and ultrasounds, stroke was ruled out. Now, her dx is vascular migraines.
Avatar f tn i came across a website a few months ago about speech surgery but i can seem to find it any longer..... please help! This discussion is related to Cerebral Anuerysm post surgery side affect - taste loss.
Avatar n tn t be sad or disappointed about this, just see a speech therapist and he/she will tell you more about your speaking abilities. After your stroke, the dominant speech area (Broca's area) in your left brain has been affected. This area is responsible for the expression of your thoughts into words, and that why you know exactly what you wanna say, but you have some difficulties expressing that.
1225678 tn?1267136608 For coordinated rehabilitation program a team of a neurologist, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist and a speech-language pathologist, a nutritionist work together to help you in your recovery. Therefore, I would suggest following the suggestion made by them and recovery will be although slow but most of the functions may be restored. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn or reconnect new pathways after stroke damage. Since it is now almost four years after his stroke, and he did the prescribed rehab at the time, we will persevere with hope and watchful reading. Having attention paid to my question was very gratifying. Thank you again.
Avatar m tn I am sorry to hear about your father’s medical problems. Post stroke the residual neurological symptoms and speech may improve or it may not. It depends on the location and size of the defect causing the stroke. You must take him to a speech therapist and his neurologist to assess whether speech will come back or not. Speech therapy, physical therapy and motivation is important for recovery. Take care!
Avatar n tn Could it be a mild stroke? The speech and arm thing suggest the possibility. I would see my doctor ASAP.
Avatar f tn t already, you should go to an endocrinologist, he can draw blood and do a special panel for your thyroid gland, and also he can order a scan if necessary. Could also be you had a mild stroke, and thus a cardiologist would be the specialist who can explore how your circulation is doing. You can also push on your lymph glands in your neck, see if they hurt or if they're swollen.
Avatar f tn My experience is limited, and with the super elderly with stroke disorders. Dysphagia has to be evaluated by a specialist in this disorder, and they do not always figure out the etiology. I can only speak of one case of a woman in her late 90's in which, following a stroke, the ability to swallow did return after eight months. I would not give up hope. There is a great deal of redundancy in the human nervous system.
Avatar n tn A related discussion, Stroke with unconsious - bedridden was started.
Avatar f tn In May 2010 he experienced difficulty speaking, fatigue, blurred vision and severe headaches. At the time the doctors told us he had a stroke...after MRI, MRA, CAT Scan, EEG, EKG and a heart haulter monitor it showed that he had no signs of a stroke. He still experiences all of these problems and prevents him from working. He took speech therapy for 3 months with no change. He sees a neurologist monthly and nobody has any answers.
Avatar n tn I've had a stroke of the brainstem (and have lived to talk about it). The brainstem is pretty important in that, among other things, controls a lot of the body's "automatic" functions (heartbeat, breathing, etc). He'll need a lot of therapy (occupational, physical and speech) after his coma, but everyone can help him now by keeping his joints and muscles limber and making-sure there is constant touch (for the firing of neurons) with his skin.
