Common Questions and Answers about Speech language pathology websites

speech

Avatar f tn I met many parents at the clinic who took their children to see an SLP (speech language pathologist) because the child was confused after being only exposed to 2 languages. It's certainly something to think about.
Avatar f tn Hes now 18 months but doesnt say alot of words. He talks up a storm but its not words. My dr wants him to go to speech therapy. Has anyone else experienced this? Im just trying to figure out if hes behind because he was early and hasnt fully caught up yet.
Avatar f tn , a big part of the question they had was about delayed speech) and I found a website (below) at the National Institutes of Health that has a section on typical speech and language development. It includes checklists that help you determine if your child is “on track” with communication development as well as definitions and some explanations of potential speech and language developmental problems and what to do about them.
Avatar m tn Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
Avatar n tn If your child’s doctor believes further assessment in necessary, then I recommend that you find an assessment team familiar with young children and autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A speech and language pathologist should be a member of the team given your description of the communication problems. (I am not a speech and language pathologist, but 3 or 4 word phrases for a 2-1/2-year-old doesn’t sound all that atypical to me.
Avatar f tn m a 43 yr old woman with a small cavernous hemangioma in my brain that sometimes causes seizures. The exact location of the tumor is located in the speech center of my brain on the left side. When I'm about to have a seizure I've noticed that I lose my ability to talk correctly. In the last month I've had 2 seizures but I've noticed that I'm having difficulty talking a great deal.
Avatar f tn It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.
6965936 tn?1394227011 They used baby sign language to help my daughter she was delayed in speech and would get so frustrated because she couldn't tell us what she wanted. But then we found out she has anxiety that causes selective mutism so they went a different route instead of the sign language.
293420 tn?1243142938 I think it would be great to have a Speech/Language Impaired forum. There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this.
543250 tn?1214743177 I forgot to say, yes Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum and is one of the Disorders that a good Speech and Language Therapist will tell you that you are looking at a probable diagnosis of autism.
16666184 tn?1450255078 t possibly be there, lack of taste. Language and speech becoming increasingly difficult and needs more pauses and corrections. Significant weight loss 60+ pounds in 4mos. Shutting in. I'm being eaten piece by piece. Mind. Body. Soul. And no one can tell me what it is. I don't know what's worse, knowing something is wrong or knowing you might never know what ate you piece by piece.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar m tn If not, I would definitely start there, by contacting a speech-language pathologist (the local school district is a great place to start, they provide services as early as age 3). They will definitely want to start with a hearing screening, and then evaluate his speech, language, and social skills. It could simply be a speech/language issue. If his delay is significant, early intervention is vital for him to catch up to peers by the time he needs to start learning to read and write.
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
Avatar f tn The school district you live in can evaluate him to determine if he qualifies for speech/language therapy. One of my children was evaluated for not talking at age three, received services from out school district as a preschooler and then no longer needed language services by the time he was a kindergartner and then no longer needed speech services by the time he was in 2nd grade. I consider him a success story now that he has successfully graduated from college and is gainfully employed.
Avatar m tn My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.
Avatar f tn I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
779913 tn?1236003421 What type of speech/language delay does she have? Has she had a speech/language evaluation -- if so, how delayed is she? I'm not familiar with a body of literature that identifies a causal relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease or laryngopharyngeal reflux disease specifically with speech delay. I'm interested to hear your answers and I'll keep up with this discussion.
584252 tn?1218223686 Hi i took my daughter Melissa to see a speech and language therapist today and she said from the little test she did her speech is within normal parameters, but from what i have been saying she did say she wanted to test her at school to check her understanding. She did notice that Melissa went into her own world and that when i spoke to her i had to repeat myself quite a few times.

Avatar n tn s just because their is a delay in brain development, even without sensory issues, that their brains just need a little more time to develop and pick up those language skills. Speech therapy helps make those neurons fire a little more and hopefully starts them going to developing. I am not sure exactly if that's what happens, or maybe like I'm imagining it wrong, but well, that was sort of my take on it from what the speech therapist told me.
Avatar m tn And the importance of pushing for things now is that it is much harder, once they are in a mainstream school, to get them placed in a school that has experience/expertise in speech language problems or other associated conditions.
Avatar n tn Besides the delay in speech/language, what behavior is of concern? If the only concern is around the language issue, he is certainly does not display a condition along the spectrum of autism. But is there something else about him that prompts people to be concerned?
