500419 tn?1220124743 Head Start is great for the social interaction. But from your post your son needs not only speech but language also. Furthermore I'm not sure that head start has a pathologist? You said they are going to work on speech in head start. Did they tell by the classroom teacher or by a professional in that field. I prefer programs like ELP and the Early Intervention Programs which have the pathologist on staff .

Avatar m tn Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced plans Wednesday via his English language Twitter account to emulate President Obama’s signature Affordable Care Act. And he even paid homage to his American counterpart. Hassan Rouhani @HassanRouhani Follow Gov will extend medical insurance to all Iranians.
Avatar n tn I think that kids that have multiple languages spoken are at a great advantage as knowing multiple languages is fantastic but it does create issues for early communication sometimes. Often along the lines of the primary caregiver speaking one language and many others in their world speaking another. I think I'd ask her doctor on her next doctor's visit about the lack of speech. It is a good sign if she gestures and communicates in 'some way'.
Avatar f tn Is your son receiving any speech and language services? There are programs in the public school system for young children as young as 3 years old who need services (ELP early or intervention programs along with speech and lauguge thrapy). They must first be tested and qualify for these services.
Avatar f tn Impaired Communication - noticeable delay or absence of spoken language; or if speech is present, atypical use of language (such stereotyped or scripted speech), impaired comprehension, and/or infrequent inititaion of speech 2. Impaired Social Skills - could include lack of shared attention or reciprocity, solitary play, difficulty initiating conversation, lack of imaginative play 3.
Avatar n tn Do you live in the U.S.? If so, ask your pediatrician about your state's birth to 3 program. When my daughter was 24 months old, her spoken vocabulary was 0 words. She would not point, would not respond to her name, did not respond to any commands or anything including things like "let's go get ice cream". She was diagnosed with PDD, but only recently, and she's almost 3 years old.
Avatar f tn Hes now 18 months but doesnt say alot of words. He talks up a storm but its not words. My dr wants him to go to speech therapy. Has anyone else experienced this? Im just trying to figure out if hes behind because he was early and hasnt fully caught up yet.
473493 tn?1236836912 what do you think I should do. I also wouldlike to know if you know any programs out there that would help understand him. Im having a very hard time.
Avatar n tn Hi, Brain injured patients may receive rehabilitation that involves individually tailored treatment programs in the areas of physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, physiatry, psychology, and social support. A complete physical and neurological examination is needed in each treatment program. It would be best to discuss which treatment option is best for you with your doctor for proper evaluation and management. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Hello everyone on this post who has been experiencing terrible reactions to dental implants. I'm glad to have found this post and am confused and upset that so many of us have to try to understand what is happening without greater awareness and support from the medical profession. I had two titanium implants put in about 8 months ago, and the crowns put in at the end of August.
Avatar n tn It is a different way of acquiring language. All children begin learning language in this way, but then change to analytical speech ie. understanding individual words and putting them into a sentence. Your child is probably learning language in whole chunks ie. the meaning of the sentence instead of the whole word. My son was the same at 3. He could repeat whole DVD dialogues. I would ask him a question and get it repeated back, or an answer totally unrelated to the question.
Avatar n tn First appointment the Neurologist said she did not think he was on the spectrum and said i should think about/read up on adhd (said he was too young to diagnose but we need to think about) last weeks appointment she just said that my son has language delay and to keep up w/ speech etc etc..she told me that he CAN catch up and she says she has seen this before (esp boys) and she is optimistic he will catch up to his peers eventually...
Avatar m tn Then there is the mechanical part of communicating our language and that is speech. Problems with speech can include just trying to get the words out, pronouncing the words, the tonal quality of our speech, using emphasis and inflection. Problems with speech can be from weakness or spasticity of the muscles of our mouths, throats and vocal cords. Or it can be with the way our brain tries to direct the speech.
Avatar n tn I think you do have a cause for concern. Children with autism show impairments in speech and language skills, impairments in social skills and odd or restricted behavior and interests. Who did you schedule an appointment with, a doctor? Your best bet would be to contact your local school district and request an evaluation to see if your child is eligible for special education services. In PA, the district has 60 days to complete the evaluation. I believe the federal law is 90 days.
Avatar n tn If you suspect that there is a language comprehension or expressive language issue, you may wish to consult a speech language pathologist. Your testing report should explain how he is doing in the area of language. One treatment that is not supported by research is theraputic listening (sometimes called the Tomatis technique). This one is not supported as efficacious by the American Academy of Peds and the American Speech and Hearing Association.
803146 tn?1241372700 Is it their speech or more their language? One good thing is there are early intervention programs out there to help. I have been a teacher for a million years until the kiddos came along. I already have my school's speech/language therapist ready to go! HA!
Avatar n tn she says hot and cold, cat and dog, time to go, outside, shoe, car ball book, a couple of her favorite cartoon characters, but other than that she pretty much just talks in her own language. she is not around other kids because i cant afford daycare so she stays at home with her dad alot....is this normal what can i do? i cant put her own my insurance through work till january of 2009 and cant get government insurance because they keep denying me since me moved to another state...
Avatar f tn It is hard to check hearing at that age because it assumes cooperation which lets face it most three year olds can sit for a hearing test, I would follow up with the pediatrician and the audiologist, the pediatriacian can give you a referal for a speech language assessment and they can help you determine it language is a problem or not.
6965936 tn?1394227011 They used baby sign language to help my daughter she was delayed in speech and would get so frustrated because she couldn't tell us what she wanted. But then we found out she has anxiety that causes selective mutism so they went a different route instead of the sign language.
293420 tn?1243142938 I think it would be great to have a Speech/Language Impaired forum. There are TONS of parents who post about their toddlers/children having speech and language issues, but they have to post on Parenting Toddlers 1-5. It would be great to have all of the posts in one place and be able to track one another's progress with their children and hear stories from other parents about their S/L impaired children. I'm an SLP and I would LOVE to have a forum for this.
543250 tn?1214743177 I forgot to say, yes Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum and is one of the Disorders that a good Speech and Language Therapist will tell you that you are looking at a probable diagnosis of autism.
16666184 tn?1450255078 t possibly be there, lack of taste. Language and speech becoming increasingly difficult and needs more pauses and corrections. Significant weight loss 60+ pounds in 4mos. Shutting in. I'm being eaten piece by piece. Mind. Body. Soul. And no one can tell me what it is. I don't know what's worse, knowing something is wrong or knowing you might never know what ate you piece by piece.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
