Speech language pathology grad school

Common Questions and Answers about Speech language pathology grad school

speech

Avatar m tn If not, I would definitely start there, by contacting a speech-language pathologist (the local school district is a great place to start, they provide services as early as age 3). They will definitely want to start with a hearing screening, and then evaluate his speech, language, and social skills. It could simply be a speech/language issue. If his delay is significant, early intervention is vital for him to catch up to peers by the time he needs to start learning to read and write.
Avatar m tn And the importance of pushing for things now is that it is much harder, once they are in a mainstream school, to get them placed in a school that has experience/expertise in speech language problems or other associated conditions.
Avatar f tn As well as the above - if this boy is 4.5 years old and is speaking very few words he needs to be seen by a Speech and Language Therapist. By that age you would be expecting sentences. There are many speech disorders and developmental disorders that have difficulties with speech as part of them. It is very possible that his aversion to school and his behaviour is down to simply not understanding language and what is expected of him.
Avatar f tn I have a speech problem and what didn’t help me was everybody reinforcing that I had the problem. That only willed the stronghold and made me believe it more. She’s still young tell her she can speak and when people speak they don’t think about what they are going to say they just speak. And just let her do it if she stutters or anything just wait for her to finish speaking. She’ll get it down and it would help to find out why she turned out that way. My dad made me stutter.
584252 tn?1218223686 Hi i took my daughter Melissa to see a speech and language therapist today and she said from the little test she did her speech is within normal parameters, but from what i have been saying she did say she wanted to test her at school to check her understanding. She did notice that Melissa went into her own world and that when i spoke to her i had to repeat myself quite a few times.
Avatar n tn First appointment the Neurologist said she did not think he was on the spectrum and said i should think about/read up on adhd (said he was too young to diagnose but we need to think about) last weeks appointment she just said that my son has language delay and to keep up w/ speech etc etc..she told me that he CAN catch up and she says she has seen this before (esp boys) and she is optimistic he will catch up to his peers eventually...
Avatar f tn Apraxia of speech is treatable with the appropriate techniques. Speech-language pathologists play a key role in diagnosing and treating apraxia of speech. It is not just a simple articulation or phonological disorder. There are several different approaches to treating apraxia of speech as no single approach has been proven to be the most effective. The program assigned will vary depending on the severity of the apraxia and the age of the child.
Avatar f tn The school district you live in can evaluate him to determine if he qualifies for speech/language therapy. One of my children was evaluated for not talking at age three, received services from out school district as a preschooler and then no longer needed language services by the time he was a kindergartner and then no longer needed speech services by the time he was in 2nd grade. I consider him a success story now that he has successfully graduated from college and is gainfully employed.
500419 tn?1220124743 My son had the same problem in speech at the age 3. My Dr. did not want him to go to head start are preschool. You are the mom I would do what you feel is right in your heart. My child received better speech therapy on his own. When he entered school it was not as good because he had to share his time with other children in speech and only got 10 min. each, when they told me it was 30 min. So you should find out from head start how much time does he really get.
Avatar f tn It is always better to get a diagnosis through Health rather than through just school, and you need a multi disciplinary team to assess her that has experience of diagnosing autistic spectrum disorders, including aspergers. This should involve a Speech and Language Therapist (to assess language and social interaction and play skills), and an Educational/Clinical Psychologist as well as a Paediatrician.
325405 tn?1262290178 Although the main issue or area that you would like to have addressed is Speech Language Pathology, the IEP should contain information on your child's interests (eg: music is a great teaching tool), art, dance (whatever) so they can incorporate it into the plan as a strategy. Also what behavioral issues arise during frustration or overstimulation? What will be the strategy to deal with those issues?
1936411 tn?1333831849 Ren, thank you. You are such a dear friend to me. You are right, Copaxone is only my first DMD. I need to remember that this road is long and I have a lot of tools to use over the years. Five or ten years from now, there will probably be even more. I will definitely look into fastweb. Thank you for mentioning it. I'm going into speech-language pathology, which can be done remotely in some cases. Mobility problems would not stop a speech-language pathologist from working.
Avatar n tn You should ask your GP or paediatrician for a referal. Usually it is the Speech and Language Therapist who will assess first. She will assess his receptive and expressive language. His use of pronounds and also his semantic/pagmatic language skills. My son also was not interested in joining in at nursery or school unless it was something he wanted to do and it was on his terms.
Avatar n tn s just that they utilize their normal speech and language abilities only in certain situations. Usually speech/language therapy per se is not useful for such children, though some forms of group speech/language therapy (focusing on the pragmatics of communication) might be helpful. Likewise, cognitive-behavior therapy, focusing on the anxiety such children usually display in out-of-home settings, can be useful. As you consider intervention, it is important to obtain accurate diagnosis.
Avatar f tn If it is then you need to go to your doctor and ask for a referal to a Speech and Language Therapist. If you suspect autism, tell your doctor that and you should ask for a SALT with experience of this diagnosis. As well as a SALT a paediatrician and physcologist should observe and assess your son before you get any kind of diagnosis.
Avatar m tn Yes, the school did assess his language and this is all he qualified for. His speech teacher sent home his progress report and said that he is progressing very well, which he is. Maybe I am just expecting things too fast because he does get better everyday. He says new things all the time that I never taught him to say so he is catching on to language that has not been taught to him. My son is about 1 year behind also and I am told by his doctor and teachers all of is due to his ears.
543250 tn?1214743177 He should really be seen and assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist that has experience of autistic spectrum disorders and speech disorders. There is alot that can be done to teach children these skills, and although they never become automatic, they can learn phrases to say that can help them in social situations. For example my son is learning how to use learnt scripts to initiate play, join in, hold a conversation etc.
Avatar f tn I think that is the most important thing for him to improve his language. If he is already getting speech therapy, maybe he needs it more often.
Avatar n tn If you live in the US your child may qualify for the Early Intervention Program or ELP and receive language and speech therapy in the public school system at no cost to you. You may want to contact you school district for more info and or get a referral from your DR requesting the school district test your child.
Avatar n tn He went on to college and then to grad school and has a PhD from Yale. 15 months is also a little on the early side, but personally, I'd just keep a track of it, address everything with the pediatrician, and stay on top of it, and try not to worry too much. Plus if you stress out, your son might pick up on it and feel undo pressure to perform (i.e. speak). Oh, and terrible twos start around 15 to 18 months, so maybe he's just starting a little early with the tantrums.
Avatar f tn Hes now 18 months but doesnt say alot of words. He talks up a storm but its not words. My dr wants him to go to speech therapy. Has anyone else experienced this? Im just trying to figure out if hes behind because he was early and hasnt fully caught up yet.
Avatar f tn YOu could have him evaluated by a speech therapist to see about his language development, do it in his most strong language. My son was delayed in speech, he did not talk until after age three. IT was hard.
