Common Questions and Answers about Speech help with sounds

speech

Avatar m tn Do you whisper or speak loudly? Do you sing a lot? I am going to speech therapy with my son for a similar problem, but they did find vocal cord nodules on him. The therapist said that you can get the chronic hoarseness for months before you'd actually see the nodules on a scope. Maybe seek help from a speech therapist and if it goes away, then you can forget the cancer worry.
Avatar m tn Well, clearly it is time to seek help with a speech pathologist. He seems to have difficulty with receptive and expressive speech elements. Why he is having difficulty would be the question. Is it a speech delay or secondary to something like sensory integration disorder in which his motor planning is not functioning properly? But you need an expert to evaluate him to discern which. Since you are his aunt, it is a good question as to what his mother says about it.
Avatar f tn Speech therapist and OT who are working with my son advised us against ABA in its pure form; they beleive that he does have the skills necessary for learning (imitation, play skills, etc), he has problems with compliance and seeks negative attention a lot. They do not view ABA approaches as suitable for him.....
Avatar n tn Honestly, it sounds like "just' a speech delay. Children with autism have problems with social skills. Most have sensory intergration disorder (SID/SPD). Many do have speech delays but not all. It's just one symptom in a list of many. If you are concerned about autism though, or even other things, I would make sure that when you were looking for a speech therapist that they also had a occupational therapist there as well.

Avatar f tn Yes speech therapy is the way to go, perhaps get her a therapist that isnt school related .Have you spoken to her pediatrician about it ?
Avatar f tn Hi, I just found this forum looking around for information about auditory processing problems. My son has an autistic spectrum disorder and hearing problems, although his hearing is tested as okay. He is being referred to an audiologist for testing to see if he has Auditory Processing problems. This is sometimes called Central Auditory Processing Disorder. Your grandaughter is sounding similar to my son ie. not pronouncing words properly, poor auditory memory, etc.
Avatar f tn Something the above poster did not mention which is also relevent to a child with a speech issue is the area of motor planning. This is praxis. To understand a question and respond---------- a child must be able to organize what is said to them and then organize a response and then send the message to the oral muscles to articulate it. That is the three parts of speech that all must be there for effective communication. Receptive speech, expressive speech and articulation.
Avatar f tn We have number of appointments with specialists scheduled for her. We will be meeting with audiologist, speech therapist, and developmental pediatrician. Although, my husband and I are terrified about what we may find out but we like to get an early start helping her get up to speed with other children. I don't want her to grow up feeling isolated and left out. Thanks again.
408443 tn?1202069828 the autism society of america web site has a FAQ that shows symptoms autism-society(dot)org click on about autism then fequently asked questions. From what you described some of these symtoms are there but not all. However the doctor may want to make a differntial diagosis and rule out other things. At this point and from what you describe, it could be anything and everything. Could even be a combination of things.
Avatar n tn He has had his veneers shaved down several times and nothing helps. Any suggestions??? Would speech therapy help?? Or does he need new veneers???
1168536 tn?1263231164 Its kind of hard to explain along with many other symptoms that just all lead to doctors telling me he needs (which he does get) speech therapy along with OT, Occupational therapy. He just seems to do a lot of things a little different then other kids. Run..Jump..Play..talk.
Avatar f tn Play lots of games with him. Like listening to the sounds. Or following instructions like 'Simon says'. Speech therapists for children essentially just use games as a way to develop speech.
Avatar f tn I sit with him sometimes and help him pronounce words. With the understanding issue, i would say, try and say 'key words'...this is what i do. Plently of things my son Steven has learned, and can respond, however, many things he's not understanding. Use simple, one maybe two words at a time. This will help him understand better.
1040373 tn?1273687488 d been a neuro) told me that the program profile they put into mine would help with some background noises, but that those in speech frequencies would be amplified. The good thing is that these units are directional, so I hear what I'm looking toward the best. The next best is stuff behind me (think teenager trying to sneak up on me to startle me while I am typing), with the sounds coming from the sides being the least well received.
Avatar f tn Just a quick question. Has anyone with ongoing stress about health had any speech symptoms (difficulty moving from one word/consonant to another. Stiffness with speech?) that stay around and don't get better for a while? It mainly started after I started worrying about health symptoms and now it is staying around although a doctor told me I didn't have an MND which is what I was scared of. Now I am putting myself through worry again and it seems to get worse daily.
Avatar n tn Another thing I wanted to mention. If he has had help with articulation, is that because your son finds it hard to make the correct letter sounds due to muscle control difficulties - or is it down to auditory processing disorder? There is a big difference. If it is auditory processing disorder then he is hearing some sounds differently and may well have auditory processing delays as well.
512655 tn?1212920204 I have been diagnosed with a cavernous angioma in the middle of my cerabellum. It has leaked and for a short bit 1 1/2 weeks caused speech problems, dexterity issues in my right hand and memory problems. Most of the speech issues and all of the motor skills issues have returned to normal. I have headaches often. I know this sounds like a really stupid question, but can I still scuba dive.
Avatar f tn Same with gluten or any other allergen. Getting rid of dairy may help one person with autism, but it may not help another. That's the thing with autism, it shows differently in each person. Different treatments help different people. It is very misleading to say that eliminating dairy products will help your child regain their speech. It might not. Same with a gluten free diet. Worth a try, but no guaranteed results.
470885 tn?1326329037 , too). He ended up being delayed in his speech, though and, after speech therapy, is just now catching up to his peers. Does anyone know what is "normal" in terms of when a baby should be starting to talk??
