676912 tn?1332812551 Does anyone here have a child with a receptive language disorder? Are they aggressive? My son was recently diagnosed with it and I'm meeting with someone tomorrow to talk about it more, but I want first hand experience too.
543250 tn?1214743177 I forgot to say, yes Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum and is one of the Disorders that a good Speech and Language Therapist will tell you that you are looking at a probable diagnosis of autism.
594330 tn?1219167188 To be sure, he is displaying some delay in the speech/language/communication domain, but he is not yet at an age at which you need to be alarmed by this. Did the S/L clinician recommend intervention?
Avatar n tn Besides the delay in speech/language, what behavior is of concern? If the only concern is around the language issue, he is certainly does not display a condition along the spectrum of autism. But is there something else about him that prompts people to be concerned?
Avatar n tn My daughter is 4 yers oldand was diagnosed with mixed recptive language disorder and borderline intellecutal funcitoning at at 2. The psychological evaluation specifcally staed that she did not have autism. She has grown tremendously since than. However, I am concerned about autism. Her preschool teacher informed me of some hand flappign that is almost un noticeable, I have noticed this as well[ it does not occur frequently, and only occurs for about 2 seconds, mybe 2-3x per day.
Avatar f tn He has not been diagnosed, although they think he has something which is in the spectrum of autism disorder. But does have a speech and language disorder. He ahs the understanding of a 2.5year old! Its very frustrating, he finds it very difficult to understand what im sayin. Its the same for me when i try to understand what he's trying to say. He's slowly getting better since he started school last september.
635457 tn?1223222111 What is included is Speech and Communication difficulties which can either be delays or a speech disorder such as Semantic Pragmatic Disorder or Echolalia. Difficulties with social interaction/social communication that affects the child's ability to socialise and interact. Children on the spectrum can range from appearing oblivious to others, or odd, or can be inappropriate and not leave other children alone.
616452 tn?1253877644 Does he have Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder? Does he have Central Auditory Processing Disorder? Does he have Dyslexia? Does he have Auditory Memory Retrieval problems? Does he have Sensory Integration Disorder, Does he have poor Theory of Mind, Does he have Executuve Function Disorder, what is his Cognitive Ability? Unfortunately the more 'disorders' you discover the more support the child gets as it proves they have severe and complex needs.
20896457 tn?1592763839 With that said, my son has something called sensory processing disorder. Tripping frequently is a sign as is garbled speech. When you do a speech eval, they check the three areas of speech which are articulation (the ability to understand the words she is saying), expressive language (ability to formulate what to say to others) and receptive language (ability to understand and process what is said to her).
Avatar n tn s just that they utilize their normal speech and language abilities only in certain situations. Usually speech/language therapy per se is not useful for such children, though some forms of group speech/language therapy (focusing on the pragmatics of communication) might be helpful. Likewise, cognitive-behavior therapy, focusing on the anxiety such children usually display in out-of-home settings, can be useful. As you consider intervention, it is important to obtain accurate diagnosis.
Avatar m tn From reading up online that I've been doing, it looks like it could be another learning disability too, like a speech-language disorder. For example: "Receptive Language Disorders - Receptive Language Disabilities: People with receptive language disorder may have difficulty understanding spoken language, responding appropriately, or both. This leads to substantial difficulty communicating.
293420 tn?1243142938 I requested this a few months ago and got a reply saying that it would be considered...but, still nothing. There are at least 5-8 posts per week about Speech/Language delays in the child development forum. I'm an SLP and my son has Apraxia (motor speech disorder). Not only do I have lots of advice to offer to parents of children with speech delays, but it would be nice to network with other moms going through the same experiences. Hurry!
Avatar n tn I am a mother of a 4 year old boy diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder a year ago. I am interested to find out more about Childhood Apraxia of Speech and the targeted therapies as Imy son has this condition in addition to the ASD. My son is currently in specialised unit for ASD kids under 5. He has a lot of initiative to try and speak and communicate with us and his teachers but his speech consist of single syllables that are often inconsistent.
Avatar m tn I would trust what the SLPs have to say
470168 tn?1237471245 My sister did not and does not have any sort of sensory processing disorder, she just had the language processing disorder, which had something to do with how her brain registers and processes language. I think sometimes auditory processing disorder and sensory processing disorder can go together, especially when someone has autism. I have sensory processing problems, and have problems filtering out conversations if other noises are going on at the same time. Loud noises really bother me.
Avatar n tn Do you live in the U.S.? If so, ask your pediatrician about your state's birth to 3 program. When my daughter was 24 months old, her spoken vocabulary was 0 words. She would not point, would not respond to her name, did not respond to any commands or anything including things like "let's go get ice cream". She was diagnosed with PDD, but only recently, and she's almost 3 years old.
665125 tn?1273023924 They tend to have language processing problems, Semantic Pragmatic Speech Disorder, Literal interpretation of language etc. Those with Aspergers tend (but not always), to do better ie average to above average academically. They also tend to have obsessions and interests. Those with autism tend to have much greater difficulty with language and tend not to develop language at the usual age. They may not be verbal at all or may be delayed or have disordered speech.
727792 tn?1231227009 But you are right to be concerned and that you should have his speech and communication assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist. Raise your concerns with the paediatrician and ask for a referal to a speech therapist.
Avatar f tn There is no question that in the area of speech/language he is delayed and there are indicatins his social development is also delayed. It is possible that he displays a type of pervasive developmental disorder, but the only way to know this is have him evaluated in all the major areas of development (motor, cognitive, social, emotional). This has nothing to do with ADHD and, in any case, he is far too young to be adequateluy evaluated in that area.
543250 tn?1214743177 But she does have the language delay. Has a Speech and Language Therapist told you it is delay and not disorder? With delay there is a possibility that it will improve, with disorder that is for life. If she is 8 and using echolalia that suggests a disorder and not delay. And echolalia is present in alot of autistic children, including my son. I would also recommend you read an article by Olga Bogdashina which is on the autism today website.
551037 tn?1214962440 has the Speech and Language Therapist definately diagnosed a delay or a disorder. A good speech and language therapist should be able to give you an indication of whether they suspect your child is on the spectrum from the kind of speech problem they have. Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum, is this what the speech therapist is referring to? You can read a good lengthy explanation of this at http:// www. hyperlexia. org/sp1.
499626 tn?1216030227 That probably means that she has some features that would contribute to a diagnosis of Asperger’s Disorder. Because Asperger’s Disorder is a behaviorally defined disorder (i.e., there is something like a blood that doctors can rely on for a diagnosis) it does take time and, ideally, multiple interactions and assessment with an individual to arrive at the correct diagnosis. This can be a very difficult time for a parent because of all the uncertainty.
Avatar n tn My son is 6 years old and also has speech delay. He now attends a Speech and Language unit. Unlike your son, I was a full time Mum and Granny also lives with us. So he was showered with language, play and good examples of speech - but still made no difference - so don't be too hard on yourself. Early years are incredibly important as children learn so much by example. I would suggest that you don't ever correct speech, but instead praise and model a good sentence structure/words for him.
Avatar m tn We have a' speech and language 'disorder forum on Med help , they may have ideas, we also have the expert/doctor forums on the right of the forums page ..I will take a look in the search engine and let you know ...
