Avatar f tn t have any speech by the age of 2, and he started with a speech therapist at 2 1/2. His speech improved, and he was referred to a preschool at age 3 for slight developmental delays. Once he got into the preschool, he was diagnosed with Auditory Receptive Disorder. Currently, he is in his second year at the preschool and is doing well. His parents have been unable to get him potty trained so far - he does use the toilet to pee, but only has bowel movements in a pull-up.
Avatar n tn If you click on the Health Page icon on the top right hand corner of this forum page you can go into The Behavioural Characteristics Behind the DSM IV Diagnostic Criteria for Autism. This is the clinical criteria the professionals use to assess whether a child is on the spectrum or not. Parents have also posted examples of their child's behaviour that fits the criteria so that will give you an idea of what the professionals are looking for.
676912 tn?1332812551 Does anyone here have a child with a receptive language disorder? Are they aggressive? My son was recently diagnosed with it and I'm meeting with someone tomorrow to talk about it more, but I want first hand experience too.
551037 tn?1214962440 has the Speech and Language Therapist definately diagnosed a delay or a disorder. A good speech and language therapist should be able to give you an indication of whether they suspect your child is on the spectrum from the kind of speech problem they have. Semantic/Pragmatic Disorder is typical of being on the spectrum, is this what the speech therapist is referring to? You can read a good lengthy explanation of this at http:// www. hyperlexia. org/sp1.
Avatar m tn Are you able to see a speech therapist for your dysarthria? A physical therapist and/or occupational therapist for your muscle problems? I will be wishing you the best. Please come back and ask more questions as you get started with Copaxone. It's quite a process. I had my injection training nurse out to my house three times in the first 6 months, and she was very helpful.
Avatar f tn but starting early is a good idea if you do need to get her into speech therapy or other assistance. My nephew went through this and did go in with a speech specialist weekly for a while, and it really helped.
1388486 tn?1279771419 I also experienced the feel of a swollen tongue and began to have a slight speech impediment. After a week of this, my doctor took me off all medications. The twitching of my lip and the speech impediment both continued. At week two my lips began to twitch as well. A couple of days after that my left eye lid also began to twitch. I am going for an MRI in a couple of days to get to the bottom of things. I am also under a lot of stress.
Avatar f tn I am not a specialist but parent of a child with mild ASD in question - possibility of a mood disorder/ADHD combination. My son makes good eye-contact, communicates failry well, follows instructions very well, friendly with everybody in general, akward with peers, lot better with older and younger children. Most think he is "shy".
Avatar f tn He has not been diagnosed, although they think he has something which is in the spectrum of autism disorder. But does have a speech and language disorder. He ahs the understanding of a 2.5year old! Its very frustrating, he finds it very difficult to understand what im sayin. Its the same for me when i try to understand what he's trying to say. He's slowly getting better since he started school last september.
Avatar f tn There are different reasons for articulation problems. Sometimes it is just a speech delay and speech therapy can correct this. Or it could be a oral motor problem related to the sensory system. (my son has sensory integration disorder and was diagnosed at 4). How are the other parts of your son's speech? There is receptive and expressive language that are really important as well.
Avatar n tn My son is 4 and a half years old. He has delayed speech. His sentences are one to three words. His doctor had always said he was perfect. Everything else has developed normally and on time. At age 4, his doctor felt that maybe he fell on the spectrum of Autism because of delayed speech and his behavior. I took him to see a speech pathologist. She said he had receptive/expressive disorder. I took him to a neurologist, and after 15 minutes of observation, he decided that it is Autism.

I am interested to find out more about Childhood Apraxia of Speech and the targeted therapies as Imy son has this condition in addition to the ASD. Avatar n tn Fetal alcohol syndrome is a diagnosis. However she should also be seen by a speech and language therapist to assess her own speech abilities and her ability to follow language (as you say she appears to forget familiar words, doesn't respond to directions/questions etc). The speech therapist should also assess her working memory, auditory memory, social skills etc.
Avatar n tn If your son has speech delays or a speech disorder then he cannot have Aspergers, because the diagnostic criteria says that for AS they need to have typical language development. So you would be looking at High Functioning Autism. It is possible to have more than one disorder or condition. You need to go to your GP and ask for a multi disciplinary team assessment by professionals who have experience of diagnosing autistic spectrum disorders.
Avatar n tn Does anyone have ideas why my wife has been slurring her words for 6 months. She is 69 & has always been in very good health. We eat very healthy & she is just slightly overweight. We drink good well water & live in a clean forest. She's never had any drugs but does drink some red wine. The slurring is worsening.
Avatar f tn My son is 34 months and recently started speech. He says a lot of words and a few phrases "shoes . . wew are you?" but seems to be behind. At his first speech session I asked the speech therapist if she noticed any signs or symptoms beyond speech. She mentioned his hand movements when he gets excited remind her of her autistic clients. She stated that she cannot make any diagnosis regarding autism and after more sessions she can refer him to a specialist if necessary.
Avatar f tn Gaining such knowledge in and of itself would not rule out a disorder on the autism spectrum. It is already clear that even if there is some disodrder along the autism spectrum (and the spectrum is quite broad), it is not a severe degree of the condition. In my opion, there is no reson to be alarmed at this point. Continue to promote their development. The upcoming year will tell a lot.
Avatar f tn My daughter also had/has problems with speech. Turns out she has autism. Long before we got this diagnosis she was in speech therapy. Therapy helped a lot and I'm glad we started it as soon as we did. Try using PECS (picture exchange cards) to help him communicate. Even if he will grow out of this and it is not autism, he will probably develop some frustration from being unable to communicate well. The cards could be a great tool for him. You could also teach him some sign language.
