Common Questions and Answers about Speech disorder toddler

speech

Avatar m tn I have a 2 1/2 yr old son who has speech delay and had some intense sensory integration issues. We began speech at 18 months and was diagnosed with apraxia. Fortunately working with him daily and with a therapist he's advanced to near average. His one word ability is awesome and he's beginning his 2 and 3 word sentences. He's gotten over much of his vestibular issues and other tactile ones over time and is near normal.
480331 tn?1310403529 Hello! I have an 18 1/2 mo old son. He does not say any words yet, except "Ma-Ma and ga-ga" He babbles mostly, but can not say any one word. I read and talk to him constantly, I look at picture books with him, and he does not stay interested. I took him to his 18 mo check up, and my Ped said, as long as he understands most of what your saying, looks at you when you call his name, shows eye contact, and smiles at you when you smile, he is ok.
20896457 tn?1592763839 With that said, my son has something called sensory processing disorder. Tripping frequently is a sign as is garbled speech. When you do a speech eval, they check the three areas of speech which are articulation (the ability to understand the words she is saying), expressive language (ability to formulate what to say to others) and receptive language (ability to understand and process what is said to her).
Avatar f tn Btw, getting a birth to three person can help with speech. He should qualify for speech therapy which does not mean he has autism.
691864 tn?1298919197 My son, 9-yrs old, has PDD (all but one criteria for ASD met), obsessive-compulsive disorder, apraxia of speech (severe), mild/moderate mental retardation, chronic, severe asthma, ventricular septal defect. In spite of his issues, he is a very happy little guy and the light of my life...he has taught us so much.
Avatar f tn Some kids are just faster than others. If he can understand what your saying most likely he's just a slower learner. My nephew has horrible speech and may even need speech therapy.
Avatar n tn Does he or she show any other traits of the autism spectrum? If not, it could be a speech delay, or a speech disorder, like childhood apraxia of speech. This can look like autism, although it is different. My son has both.
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for your great response. It's always nice to have my mind somewhat put at ease. It's so hard to see my son develop in so many areas, and as I may or may not have mentioned he is a very bright little boy, but I got in a nasty habit of comparing him to other kids -I know a major no no as no two kids are the same, but just want to also make sure that it's nothing I am doing wrong. I will have to admit the speech thing is hard for me.
Avatar n tn When my child was first assessed by Speech/Language professional she told me straight away that with that kind of speech problem it is usually autistic spectrum disorder eg. not understanding pronouns (I, me, you, she, he, his, hers, they, them etc); difference in receptive/expressive language (expressive language at age 7, receptive at age 3) and echolalia.
Avatar n tn I just had him evaluated by the regional center nearby and they told me he needs to see a behavioral therapist, a psychologist, and a geneticist for possible autism or something else. I have an older son who had speech delays, but he is doing much better and at least he had an attention span where I could teach him stuff, even if he couldn't expressively communicate very well. Here are my questions, and I would be extremely grateful for any help: 1. What could this be? 2.
Avatar n tn My son also had some speech issues as a toddler that were related to sensory. Motor planning is part of the sensory system and if the signals are even a little off, a child can have articulation problems. It can go the full extent of not being able to organize/take in things said to them or organize/put together into sentenses what they want to say (receptive and expressive speech). My son was mild and just had articulation issues. He also found handwriting hard and would avoid it.
Avatar m tn Has anyone every mentioned sensory integration disorder to you? That could affect speech and eating. Motor planning is a big part of speech and motor planning is part of the sensory system. This is the part of the nervous system that organizes and coordates functions of the brain. You must organize the thought and then the motor componant must work properly to make the sounds. Motor planning also plays a role in eating. Chewing takes a lot of motor control.
Avatar m tn She has been evaluated for mechanical problems, has had ankylglossia repaired and they have ruled out dysphagia lusoria due to her aberrant right subclavian artery. No marked improvement from speech therapy. Docs now think possibly neurologic. Would a neurologic cause present as intermittent?
676912 tn?1332812551 He doesn't have speech therapy. He's five years old. He speaks clearly, and has a huge vocabulary, normal for his age. I'm not 100% sure about all of it, but I know it has more to do with his brain and comprehension.
Avatar m tn My son has a developmental delay called sensory integration disorder which involves things like speech, motor control, he flapped his hands for a while, etc. Can your boy follow a simple command? Sounds like he can--- which is a great sign. Now, the important thing to know is that intervention can do wonders for a child. Have you talked to your doctor about this?
Avatar f tn Hi there. We also had a traumatic bith of my first child------ latent phase labor of three days until it was realized that something was wrong. I was so sick by the time he was born that it is all a blur. AND, my son has a developmental delay. A developmental delay does not mean a child isn't smart of have a high/normal IQ. My son is quite bright. But his nervous system does not work properly at times. His developmental delay is called sensory integration disorder.
342647 tn?1291107933 my son started speaking full words really early but when he would say something that i couldn't understand, i would name off things that sounded similar to what he had said until he finally said yes to one of them i immediatly pronounced it the way it was supposed to be said and he would pronounce it the correct way and run around the house saying it i think maybe because he was proud that he said it right...lol......
Avatar m tn Kids talk at different ages. He understands a lot more words than he can say, so just keeping talking to him, when he wants a cookie, when giving it to him say "cookie." Encourage him to use his words. Einstein didn't talk until he was 4, I wouldn't be concerned about this.
Avatar f tn Talk to your doctor about possible therapies for your son.
Avatar f tn Thank you very much!!!
Avatar f tn I need help. My son is only 3. He will be 4 in July. A month after his third birthday he was actually diagnosed with ADHD. I understand this diagnosis its rarely given before 5 due to"toddler symptoms" being similar. So I hope that gives you some idea of how severe this is. The neurologist that diagnosed him said it was the worst case he had seen in his 20 years.
Avatar n tn Agreed, take your daughter to a psychologist. Our son was almost certainly among the rare kids who are ill with BPD in early childhood (age 3 1/2, to be precise, complete with what is now called 'pressured speech'), but back in those days, childhood bipolar disorder was considered impossible. Having your child evaluated will almost certainly help all of you, and it may benefit her future in incalculable ways.
Avatar n tn I just need him to communicate with me more/better. Any ways you got your toddler talking?? Please help. Thanks in advance. God Bless all.
Avatar f tn You have what is called an "expressive disorder". It may be what is called apraxia. Needless to say you require an immediate dye contrast MRI and a consultation with a facility that has neurologists available to review your disorder. A teaching hospital is a good place to find this expertise. Yes, something is wrong. It may be serious and it may not be. Sometimes these problems are due to destruction of impingement on a specific area of the brain by a tumor.
Avatar f tn Hi Rayyu. I am not a specialist but parent of a child with mild ASD in question - possibility of a mood disorder/ADHD combination. My son makes good eye-contact, communicates failry well, follows instructions very well, friendly with everybody in general, akward with peers, lot better with older and younger children. Most think he is "shy".
Avatar f tn He has not been diagnosed, although they think he has something which is in the spectrum of autism disorder. But does have a speech and language disorder. He ahs the understanding of a 2.5year old! Its very frustrating, he finds it very difficult to understand what im sayin. Its the same for me when i try to understand what he's trying to say. He's slowly getting better since he started school last september.
1205076 tn?1310609559 Her mother (my daughter) was just recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. I have panic attacks occasionally and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I have raised her since she was an infant and refers to me as "mommy". She does not realize the family dynamics. Is she having a panic attack or is this something else? And could this be related to her biological mom's mental illness? Thank you for helping.
