Speech development repeating words

Common Questions and Answers about Speech development repeating words

speech

Avatar n tn He has been diagnosed with ADHD and has a few other problems like fine motor skills. About a year ago he started repeating his speech. Whatever he says, he repeats to himself under his breath. It's a constant behaviour pattern. It doesn't seem to be a problem but his friends have noticed it and comment on it. Anyone else have a similar experience ? This discussion is related to Whispered Repetitive Speech.
Avatar n tn My friends son is 2 1/2 years old and does not speak much at all. He does say people's names but overall I never hear him talk on his own. He does pick words out of a conversation and repeats them over and over again. The repeating of words is sporadic through out the day, so it's not constant. His parents taught him sign language and that was his primary way to communicate up until he was 18 months old. He completely stopped signing at 18 months old.
Avatar n tn The problem is she is mostly singing the songs with her own words and not the actual words. The two words we get out of her with any regularity are "Peeeeeese" and "Hewo!" (spoken in a huge voice). She is very social, loves to play with animals and other children when we go to the playground and the fact that she learns music but not words is frustrating. Again, thanks for your encouragement.
Avatar f tn Maybe you could try either printing some material from the Internet on normal speech development of children at given ages, or get a book at the library on toddler development and see if milestones are given, and show them. Do you think he doesn't hear, or is it simply that he is not seeming to comprehend language? If you think it might be his hearing, also see what you can find of symptoms of hearing issues in small children.
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
Avatar f tn But from age 3+ he started repeating TV/DVD dialogue and also uses phrases, words, accents etc from films and TV in his speech. Now I would say his speech is 50/50 his own and delayed echolalic speech. He finds it harder to find the words to put together a sentence himself. It is easier for him to use a phrase he has already heard and use it correctly in its emotional context. So, for example, if his father were to tease him, he might say 'I'm going to send you to Timbuktu'.
Avatar f tn But basically I hear her repeating what she hears others say rather than using her own creative speech. I have 7 other grandchildren and am beginning to get concerned about her.
Avatar m tn flapping of hands and other repeated body movements, going in circles, repeating words, repeating tasks etc; not maintain eye contact; no social smile; avoid words and prefers gestures etc. I personally feel it is too early to worry. Your child is just 2 and half years old.
470885 tn?1326329037 s right about that..Kahlan started words about 5 months (girls usually start verbal development earlier) but she didn't have any sort of context or reactive placement until she was closer to 10/11 months. I think for a boy you could expect that to happen within a month or two of that age span. Kahlan said mama and dada for the first time within a few days of each other, but she didn't use "mama" in context until 8 months...
Avatar n tn t feel the sisters are exhibiting any signs of the illness. Anyway, can this repeating of words be associated with anything else such as ADHD or OCD?
Avatar f tn t worry just yet. Just keep repeating words and she will catch on. Try drawing a picture on flash cards with the word so she doesn't give u that "im being punished? " look...
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar f tn My 4 year old daughter has been speaking clearly and concisely with no stammering or hesitation, however, within the last two weeks has begun repeating the first 3 or 4 words of each sentence. Is this normal for this age?
Avatar f tn The educators from the Child Development Center my son goes to (he's 3 years old), suggested I sign him up for Speech Therapy at the local elementary school because his speech is delayed. Apparently, by law, the school has to enroll him for this problem. I don't know if this law is state wide or national, but you may look into a Speech Therapy program at your local Elementary school as well.
486038 tn?1300063367 I have had similar issues before. For me I don't think that they lasted for very long. The biggest problem that I have with speech is that I begin to stumble over my words. Kind of like my mouth can't get the words out fast enough or the right way. I just have to stop, take a deep breath and refocus. And yes, it is frustrating as he** but something that luckily only pops up once in awhile. By the way, I am glad that you are back at home and recovering!
Avatar m tn My daughter just turned 3 a few weeks ago. While she typically talks in 4-5 word sentences and displays an average vocabulary, I think she is struggling with some comprehension issues. If asked a question she doesn't know the answer to, she will automatically answer yes as opposed to thinking about it or responding with ''I don't know.'' I think she knows she's supposed to have an answer, but doesn't know what to do when she doesn't get what you are saying.
470885 tn?1326329037 t quite on par with other kids his age (fewer words, not yet stringing 2 words together). He sent us to an audiologist for a hearing test (which checked out fine) and referred us to a local children's centre where they deal with all sorts of behavioral/developmental issues. We waited 5 months for an assessment - by then, DS' vocabulary had improved (he had well over 50 words, but still wasn't really stringing much together).
325405 tn?1262290178 Getting specific on things, what other things would you expect besides returning greetings? Would it be too much to ask that she initiate the greetings or initiate language? (she's very echolalic right now). Returning a morning greeting she often enough. Initiating a greeting she never does. We've been struggling to get her to ask for things instead of tugging at us. We always ask her to either "use her words" or ask her "What do you want?
Avatar n tn In several areas of his development (speech/language, impulse control, social) he is not keeping pace with what would be expected of his age. It would be wise to arrange a developmenatl evaluation. If you live in an area where you have access to a pediatric hospital, particularly a so-called teaching hospital, this should not be difficult to arrange.
Avatar f tn My son is currently 32 months old. To date, he can only say between 10-15 words, but he babbles all of the time (he will say googoo gaga like a baby). He has been in speech therapy for a year now, and he still only says 10-15 words--the same number as when he started. Some of my concerns are that my son is not speaking more than 15 words, doesn't really answer questions when asked, or vocalize his wants or needs. If we ask him if he is hungry, he will sit there. If i say, "yes, no?
594330 tn?1219167188 I am worried sick about his lack of comprehension and am looking for answers. Today I had a child development specialist and a speech pathologist observe him and thespeech pathologist said she was more concerned with his lack of command following than use of the language. I don't know if maybe there are things I can try to do or change to help him reach this level of cognitve and communitive development.
Avatar f tn My little boy had developmental delay. He started to walk and speak at about 20 month old. We've been taking him to a psychometric for 4 month now and recently started with a speech therapist, he's doing very well but he repeats every what i tell him if i ask how are you? he repeats the question instead of answering. He answers yes/no questions and some questions like what's this? where are you going?how many?
