Avatar f tn Should I wait for the assessment or there is signs to worry and it could be more than just speech delay? Should I encourage his interest in numbers and letters or try to remove all the toys with numbers and letters? Thank you for any advise!
Avatar n tn t think conversationally he is up to par for a four year old. I am thinking of putting him in speech therapy to see if this will help his social and conversating skills. If you ask him questions, most of the time he can answer you. I am just worried and want him to do well in school when he starts in August 2010. Do you think speech therapy will benefit him?
342647 tn?1291107933 That is normal and it actually sounds like your baby might be advanced in the speech department! Just keep speaking clearly and talking a lot to them and they'll pick it all up. Your pediatrician will start assessing speech development during visits. At least they SHOULD. You might notice, as they do the exam, the doctor will ask your child questions like, "What's your favorite food? Do you have a special toy?" to coax them into talking to see how well they speak.
Avatar n tn Sometimes children with autism will use phrases from shows or from conversations they have heard other people have in their speech.
Avatar f tn She understands what we tell her, she knows and points where the moon or the stars are, or get her slippers or eat her food. She loves to play with children. Does she just have delayed development? What are the things that I may do at home to improve her verbal development? I don't want to wait till she gets 2 years old and realize it's too late for me to do something about it. I am located in the Philippines and I am not sure that I will find an expert to help her.
Avatar f tn The center did an eval of him, but said sometimes the results can be skewed because the test was administered while other children were in the room. They had his emotional development at 11 months and cognitive at 12 months.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar f tn any way he has been have development delays, especially in his speech, and behavioral problems. any information would be helpful, i dont know what to do. we saw a developmental specialist a year ago because his pediatrician thought he was showing signs for autisms, but that was ruled out and was diagnosed with anxiety problems. he still is having major problem in school and going to see the specialist again in a few weeks. thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon.
Avatar f tn My granddaughter is 3 yrs., 9 mos. She is still not potty trained despite consistency in putting her on the potty. She screams and covers her ears when you mention it's time to go on the potty. She also does not seem to know how to interact with other children. She will say hi to them, but if asked a question, doesn't answer or moves to something else. Her speech is fine, she just doesn't use it much If I ask her what she did at the playground, I get no response.
293420 tn?1243142938 I requested this a few months ago and got a reply saying that it would be considered...but, still nothing. There are at least 5-8 posts per week about Speech/Language delays in the child development forum. I'm an SLP and my son has Apraxia (motor speech disorder). Not only do I have lots of advice to offer to parents of children with speech delays, but it would be nice to network with other moms going through the same experiences. Hurry!
Avatar m tn My elder son is now 3 years and 4 months. His speech development is as slow as a kid who is 18 months to 24 months old. He started speaking 2 to 3 word sentences when he reached 3 years. He can identify pictures of family and relatives. Still he speaks some words which are quite meaningless. He has a few symptoms like slapping his hand on the face or hitting his head on the floor when he gets angry. He has been very interested in TV ads since 6 to 7 months of age.
Avatar f tn You have 5 children now and it almost seems that having 5 children all healthy is beating the odds but in truth you do have all healthy children. So count your lucky stars and enjoy.
Avatar f tn Broadly speaking, children with autism are affected in all three of the following areas of development: 1. Impaired Communication - noticeable delay or absence of spoken language; or if speech is present, atypical use of language (such stereotyped or scripted speech), impaired comprehension, and/or infrequent inititaion of speech 2. Impaired Social Skills - could include lack of shared attention or reciprocity, solitary play, difficulty initiating conversation, lack of imaginative play 3.
Avatar n tn He does not have repetitive speech, is not excelled in any area, plays appropriately with toys, and demonstrates "shared attention". He is not overly sensitive to sensation and has no "unusual" fears. He will run or hop throughout the house which seems repetitive, but he seems to be burning energy. He does not prefer it to normal play and is easily redirected. My question is, can a child can be be "on the spectrum" without having those typical behaviors?
Avatar f tn Whether or not they have, if you feel that your son may have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), I recommend that you try to find a clinic that specializes in children with ASDs for further assessment. (Talking to your son’s pediatrician or the local EIP may help with this.
Avatar m tn He has poor eye contact. We don’t have any development pediatrician in Bangladesh. We are in desperate need of help and guidance.
Avatar n tn If he has typical speech development then that would usually rule out autism, but might mean Aspergers. But those with Aspergers although their speech is considered 'normal' may still have problems processing language, or may have literal interpretation of language. They can sometimes have a strange tone of voice or emphasis the wrong part of words, or they may have an accent.
Avatar f tn Maybe you could try either printing some material from the Internet on normal speech development of children at given ages, or get a book at the library on toddler development and see if milestones are given, and show them. Do you think he doesn't hear, or is it simply that he is not seeming to comprehend language? If you think it might be his hearing, also see what you can find of symptoms of hearing issues in small children.
Avatar n tn Given your son’s age, I would not be surprised if the recommendation is to wait, however, I always advise parents that if the recommendation is to wait, and you notice any decrease in your child’s development, you contact the pediatrician at that time and not wait. In the meantime you may wish to take a look at the websites below. They have information about early identification of children with ASD and general child development.
