Common Questions and Answers about Speech development in 14 month old

speech

Avatar f tn My 14 month old boy was a preemie by 1 month. He is not walking yet and only babbles mama and dada. Also, when he gets excited, he bites the back of his hand very hard and throws his head forward. Although we can stop him from doing this if we intervene right away, it looks weird! Are these biting episodes and lack of walking and talking a sign of something wrong? This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn To date, he can only say between 10-15 words, but he babbles all of the time (he will say googoo gaga like a baby). He has been in speech therapy for a year now, and he still only says 10-15 words--the same number as when he started. Some of my concerns are that my son is not speaking more than 15 words, doesn't really answer questions when asked, or vocalize his wants or needs. If we ask him if he is hungry, he will sit there. If i say, "yes, no?
Avatar f tn If you or your son's health professionals have any concerns about your son's development, I recommend that you seek an evaluation. In the best case, a professional will be able to alleviate these concerns. If a developmental concern is detected, you will have acted early, giving your son the best chance to meet his potential. I would recommend that you seek assessment by a team of professionals with experience diagnosing autism spectrum disorders.

Impaired Social Skills - could include lack of shared attention or reciprocity, solitary play, difficulty initiating conversation, lack of imaginative play 3.
Avatar n tn t think conversationally he is up to par for a four year old. I am thinking of putting him in speech therapy to see if this will help his social and conversating skills. If you ask him questions, most of the time he can answer you. I am just worried and want him to do well in school when he starts in August 2010. Do you think speech therapy will benefit him?
Avatar m tn There is a fairly broad range in what is considered normal development, and it’s not unusual for a child to have brief pauses in language acquisition or the development of social skills and interactions. However, it’s just not possible to tell whether what you are describing is within the range of normal – only an in-person evaluation by a qualified professional can really answer your question.
Avatar m tn We have a nineteenth month old son who we’ve been concerned about for several months. He was saying three of four words a few months ago but now has lost that ability. In addition, he rarely responds to his name. I know these are two classic red flags for Autism/PDD NOS. Couple notes of interest on our son.
Avatar n tn my daughter will be 3 yrs old in august and has no more than 10 words dada for daddy, tata for water, no, thank u , i love u .She brings u to what she wants. sometimes follow commands. Don't interact with other kids even if they try she will walk away from them all the time. will try to repeat some words u ask her to sometimes. Is she autistic?
594330 tn?1219167188 You can certainly check in with the speech/language pathologist for some practical suggestions to emply at home. One thing that will be helpful is to limit the extent to which to accommodate to your son's gestural or other non-verbal communication. If you 'communicate' with him by permitting yourself to be dragged over to whateverit is he wants, you'll actually inhibit his development of language because you'll be reinforcing what he already does.
Avatar m tn we have a speech and language disorder forum on Med Help you may also find some good answers there .
Avatar n tn I have a 21 month old son, who started talking when he was about 11 months old. Once he started walking around 14 months old he just quit talking, he doesn't say anything anymore. He has a speech therapist and an occupational therapist but no one seems to have any answers as to why is speech has stopped.
Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
Avatar m tn If he doesn’t, you’re still getting him valuable services that can help speed up his development in the areas you’re targeting. I would recommend having him seen by a specialist in another few months to see if a diagnosis is warranted given the progress you will have seen by that point.
Avatar m tn I am writing because I am concerned about my 14 month old boy (just turned 14 months today). His pediatrician has been concerned about him since he was 6 months old, and he was evaluated by a speech pathologist at his 6 month well baby visit. She said she thinks he is okay, but that was 8 months ago. He has never liked close-up eye contact, will not look at the person holding him, but will look at you most of the time if someone else is holding him.
Avatar f tn My little boy had developmental delay. He started to walk and speak at about 20 month old. We've been taking him to a psychometric for 4 month now and recently started with a speech therapist, he's doing very well but he repeats every what i tell him if i ask how are you? he repeats the question instead of answering. He answers yes/no questions and some questions like what's this? where are you going?how many?
342647 tn?1291107933 I can't tell you if it is normal or not, but my 24 month old does the same thing. Only Daddy and I can really understand her. DH is around her every day but can't always understand her as well a I do.
304970 tn?1331425994 I agree that every baby grows at a different rate and I would wait until his 2nd birthday before I start considering testing....some babies take awhile and then all of a sudden blossom into constant talkers. he may be one of those kids that likes to observe and consider things before attempting them, which means that when he speaks he'll probably be VERY good at it. or he may have a delay...either way, I would wait until after 2...but not too long.
Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar f tn hi, I have a 17 months old daughter and she could only speak, Mama, Papa and Baba. Her new born screening was fine , my husband and I have normal language/verbal development. She understands what we tell her, she knows and points where the moon or the stars are, or get her slippers or eat her food. She loves to play with children. Does she just have delayed development? What are the things that I may do at home to improve her verbal development?
Avatar n tn Given your son’s age, I would not be surprised if the recommendation is to wait, however, I always advise parents that if the recommendation is to wait, and you notice any decrease in your child’s development, you contact the pediatrician at that time and not wait. In the meantime you may wish to take a look at the websites below. They have information about early identification of children with ASD and general child development. Avatar f tn t pin point if he has autism, ADHD or something else may be wrong with him. His speech is very poor, he is not able to speak in sentences and currently he is only speaking a couple of basic words such as : "dada", "ducky", "go", "help", "color", "book", "broke". What I am noticing is that he is replacing words that start with a B with a G, so instead of "broke", he will say "ghoke".
Avatar f tn You son may, indeed, have a problem, but he may just be later in speech development. Listen to your pediatrician and to your heart. Take him for more tests if you think there's a problem. Read about other children who turn out perfectly ok, but were late developers. Does you son exhibit behaviors totally different from those children? Don't forget that girls surpass boys in almost every skill date in the pre-school years.
Avatar f tn My granddaughter is 3 yrs., 9 mos. She is still not potty trained despite consistency in putting her on the potty. She screams and covers her ears when you mention it's time to go on the potty. She also does not seem to know how to interact with other children. She will say hi to them, but if asked a question, doesn't answer or moves to something else. Her speech is fine, she just doesn't use it much If I ask her what she did at the playground, I get no response.
Avatar f tn My son turned 2 years old in Oct. He is still not talking, he is slurring different sounds but not saying anything. I'm concerned that he may have autism. For the past month he has started to show a little more eye contact, he lines his toys up, and gets mad if you knock thinkgs over. He does have sensory issues. He has seen a speech terapist for a year now and just started seeing a OT. Some people have told me that it could be ADHD, Asburgers, or mild form of autism.
