Avatar f tn He has been seen by a child development doctor. He has had one session of speech therapy, another in a couple of weeks. He has got an appointment with an occupational therapist next week. I received a copy of the letter addressed to my doctor with a report from when I saw the Child development doctor that said he has mild Hypotonia??? My question is does anyone have a child like mine who has or had similar development delays and what was the outcome.
Avatar n tn I think the speech therapy is a great idea. My son who is now 6 had a speech delay as well. He talks pretty well now, still misprounounces some things, but I've seen GREAT progress in teh speech dept. Sometimes kids do not listen. Sometims my son is like that. Yes, changing caregivers is reallly hard on a kid, we just had to do that as well and it's tough. Ours wasn't planned, but we had to do it.
Avatar f tn Should I wait for the assessment or there is signs to worry and it could be more than just speech delay? Should I encourage his interest in numbers and letters or try to remove all the toys with numbers and letters? Thank you for any advise!
Avatar f tn Your description indicates that your son is displaying a serious developmental delay in the area of speech/language - that is obvious. The question is whether he is displaying delays in other aeas of his development (motor, social, emotional, cogniitve). The fact that his speech/language is not growing in spite of the intervention does invite concern. It would be wise to have him evaluated by a team of developmental specialists so that you gain an accurate pucture of his developmental status.
Avatar m tn The speech delay usually shouldn't be a huge problem. Some children start speaking later than others. Keep practicing with him and giving positive feedback to encourage him. As with the hitting, you are the parent and need to put him on time out and make sure he knows hitting is not ok. He is acting out and if he knows he can get away with it, he will keep doing it and it can get much worse, so stop it now while he's young.
Avatar f tn his growth charts and other developments have been normal, the only slight delay being in onset of teething(around 11 mth). However,he was not responding to his name or saying mama or papa by age of 2 and half.We consulted his paediatrician and he advised to wait for 6 mths and watch for autism /ADHD. C/C-even though he uses some words like names and points to some 20-30 vegetables and fruits ,objects like umbrella, watch, clock,tv,mobiles etc.
Avatar n tn and now i am concerned about her speech, i live in ukraine now so western style medicine is a bit hard to comeby so i was wondering if this is normal how long should i wait before getting help, is there anything i can do to help her out. she is so frustrated.
Avatar n tn In answer to your original question. Austism is a very specific disability. Children can have a speech delay without autism. Many children I service just need time and therapy to catch up. Don't worry -just enjoy and work with your child.
Avatar n tn At his 2 yr wellness check my ped. referred him to early intervention for speech delay. His expressive speech was found to be 50% delayed. It was also noted that he had a short attention span, high activity level, and was "sensory seeking". At the time I was working full-time and his behavior was a little off. He would jump on things, get incredibly frustrated, have tantrums, and hit me.
Avatar n tn Now, in spite of that, this child may display some delay in his language development. An evaluation by a Speech/Language professional is in order.
Avatar m tn I am in very much worried about him. We are giving him speech therapy since one month and we admit him in a pre-school. Please advice.
Avatar n tn My son is 26 months old and has been diagonised with speech development delay but now I am wondering if there is more to be concerned about. He was also slow/delayed at reaching gross motor milestones of sitting, crawling and walking. He flaps his armes when excited or agitated, and is compulsivily clean. He can be extremely affectionate one minute but then start hitting, biting and/or pulling hair.

Avatar f tn Broadly speaking, children with autism are affected in all three of the following areas of development: 1. Impaired Communication - noticeable delay or absence of spoken language; or if speech is present, atypical use of language (such stereotyped or scripted speech), impaired comprehension, and/or infrequent inititaion of speech 2. Impaired Social Skills - could include lack of shared attention or reciprocity, solitary play, difficulty initiating conversation, lack of imaginative play 3.
Avatar f tn My son is 2.2 now & can only say few words (he had about 40 words, some are phrases) but he will only talk when he feels like it. The only consistent words that he says everyday is dada, mama, yaya (nanny). He babbles a lot but he doesn't really point to things that he likes, he will just try to grab things or get my hands so I can get it for him. When we call him, sometimes he'll look & sometimes he'll ignore us.
Avatar n tn m not sure where your from so its probably called something different but there should be programs where you are that helps with children speech development they came to your house they will observe your child and then set up appointments depending on how much and what kind of help she needs they come to your home for the appointments so the child is comfortable there is usually no charge depending on your insurance and they will be able to tell you if she needs testing for autism and where you
273579 tn?1256655053 The sooner you help your son with speech, OT and other therapies, the better for him. If you are in Northern California, ask for a referral to the MIND Institute at UC Davis. You can Google and find out more about them. If you do not want to drive to Davis and you are in the Bay area, try Oakland Chidren's Hospital. Also read about dairy free and gluten free diets to see if any of these diets are something that you are willing to try.
Avatar n tn Posting because I want to know whether she sounds like a full-blown autism case or could this all be related to a speech delay? Does speech delay always have to meet autism spectrum?

Avatar m tn Your son is showing some delay in the area of speech/language, and this may be in the context of generally sound development overall. If the pace of his speech/language does not pick up some momentum over the next several months it would be prudent to arrange an evaluation with a Speech/Language pathologist and/or arrange an Earli Intervention evaluation.
665125 tn?1273023924 in Asperger’s Disorder, there is no delay in early language development. In Autism, there is some delay in language acquisition. Also, delays (in language or social development) must be noted to occur prior to age 3 for a diagnosis of Autism. Other generalizations are often made about the different characteristics and interests of individuals diagnosed with these disorders, but those characteristics are not part of the diagnostic criteria for the disorders.

Avatar m tn Your son is showing some definite unevenness in his development. While his motor development appears to be intact, his cognitive development is not up to par, nor are his social and emotional development. Ask his pediatrician to refer him to a developmental pediatrician for an evaluation.
Avatar m tn we have a speech and language disorder forum on Med Help you may also find some good answers there .
304970 tn?1331425994 I agree that every baby grows at a different rate and I would wait until his 2nd birthday before I start considering testing....some babies take awhile and then all of a sudden blossom into constant talkers. he may be one of those kids that likes to observe and consider things before attempting them, which means that when he speaks he'll probably be VERY good at it. or he may have a delay...either way, I would wait until after 2...but not too long.
