Avatar f tn Well - you have got to have a liquid - so the options are water, milk, or soy/almond/rice/coconut milk. Then you have to have some source of protein. Other than protein powder, you are pretty limited. You don't want to use raw egg. You could use nuts or peanut butter. Other sources of protein such as cooked meat or fish wouldn't be particularly appetizing in a smoothie.
Avatar f tn Yea I'd try to avoid the protein powder and get the protein I need from the food I eat. I'm a vegetarian so I get my protein from tofu and other foods made from soy, beans, nuts, and dairy products. You don't know all the ingredients in the protein powder so I'd ask my doctor about it.

Avatar f tn As far as protein shakes, GNC brand protein powder is delicious. Serving size is 3 scoops, 60 grams of protein, 300+ calories. All you need is one scoop, 1/2 cup of almond milk, tablespoon of almond butter (much better for you than peanut) ice, and water. I usually add a stevia packet to my protein shakes as well. Makes it a little sweeter without the added calories.

I've also used their vitamins and skin care, lift off tablets and powdered chicken soup. Overall, I still count calories, select lean meats, fresh/frozen fruits and vegetables, low-fat or non-fat dairy and whole grain breads/pastas.

Avatar n tn the expensive type tuna is the fatty kind, salmon has more calories than other fish, shrimp can raise cholesterol levels and possibly contribute to gout, the soy sauce sodium may raise your blood pressure and the rice, oh well, it`s more calories. But then again - it is hard to really pig out on sushi, isn`t it?
Avatar f tn I think the rice protein powder should be fine, then, as long as it's the protein and not just brown rice powder. Soy is a more complete protein, but if you isolate protein, you've got protein no matter the source. And the almond milk is also a good source as long as it doesn't have too much sugar in it. You can also buy chicpea flour, though I'm not sure of the taste and it probably isn't digestible raw.
Avatar f tn You can also use flavored Greek yogurts, but watch the calorie count as some have a lot more sugar than the plain yogurt, and by the time you add milk and the protein powder you might have more calories than you bargained for. I have more recipes, if you're interested, but they aren't much different from these. Your imagination and tastebuds are the only limits to what you can put into a smoothie.
Avatar m tn What you need to do is research the forms of protein. Some soy protein is quite bad for people, some is quite good. Depends on the form. Same with whey. For building muscle, some prefer egg protein, but most seem to like the whey. Organic is great, but when you're isolating something down to the protein, it's more important it be done correctly. An organic product that uses the wrong kind of method of isolating the protein isn't going to be very helpful.

I went with veggie & fruit smoothies and used soy milk as it had higher protein content (vs other but mills). But I want to know if anyone else has found out anything else!

973741 tn?1342342773 ve noticed that when I buy any premixed protein shakes, it usually has twice the amount of calories as using powder (30 g protein for 120 calories vs. 20-30 g protein for 240 calories), those extra calories are almost always added sugar, and that is not necessarily great to be drinking. If you are trying to "bulk", those extra calories might be fine, but they are a waste on me and I avoid premixed protein shakes.
Avatar f tn Soy products/tofu are good sources of protein, however, if you have thyroid issues, you should not eat/drink soy. Beans and legumes are also good sources of protein, as are eggs, dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt) and whole grains. I don't eat soy, a lot of beans or legumes, so, unfortunately, I can't provide recipes, but you can do a search.
