Common Questions and Answers about Soy protein negative effects

protein

Avatar m tn After struggling with on and off constipation I had put her on soy milk at the age of 4. Now, about 4 months later since I put her on soy milk I learned of the high estrogen content. I am concerned about this and wish to remove her from soy and try almond milk (she has no tree nut allergies). My concern is almond milk has very little protein. What should I give her to provide her with enough protein that cow's milk has? Do I give her protein pills?
Avatar f tn soy is a controvercy that will always be there. Many leading health writers now say its bad for the whole body, yet many still support it. Its though to steer away from it if you have thyroid issues. Its used in Asia for centuries in food, but the difference apparently is fermentation....... or not, and how much you are consuming.
377296 tn?1281095438 The problem though is that most of the soy products on US shelves are the nonformented variety- Tofu, Edamame, Soy flour, Soy Protein Isolate, Soy Milk, Soy Lecithin, Vegetable Oil (with soy). These nonformented products contain high levels of toxins which are the subject of controversy b/c of the studies showing they can cause cancer, diminish thyroid function, cause hormone imbalances, and on and on. For me, I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Avatar m tn It appears that any significant amount of protein in any form creates several painful and uncomfortable side effects in my body when consumed. This includes meat, eggs, dairy, soy, beans, and nuts.
Avatar m tn Would consuming a fast-absorbing protein or slower digesting casein protein be better? Is my lack of sleep somehow related to this? Some eastern medicine literature suggests lack of sleep causes the face (the temples in particular) to hollow.
Avatar m tn These include MSG, aspartame, hydrolyzed proteins, vegetable protein, isolated protein, soy products (including soy protein isolates, soy protein and soy milk), natural flavoring, sodium or calcium caseinate and others. All of these food additives worsen brain excitation and have been shown to specifically target the amygdala nucleus a set of neurons in the brain’s temporal lobe. They are key to the processing of emotions. Increase your vegetable intake to at least 5 servings a day.
Avatar m tn Kinda new to this PVC - Bigeminy "fun". Trip to the ER, wore a heart rate monitor for 2 months, visit with a cardologist. Pretty much was told what you all are saying...nothing to worry about. But they sure can last for hours and make me feel terrible. This past month I did pretty good. Very few. Feeling better, I went back to my routine where I have a soymilk protein shake for breakfast. 3 days into it, my bigeminy returned.
Avatar f tn As for Soy, Asians eat a lot of soy in their diet, Soy formula is a good choice for infants, Soy-containing foods help prevent osteoporosis, Soy is a healthy food for adults, Soy helps improve libido in men. The above about Soy is false. Those who eat large amounts of soy, especially non-fermented soy, have severe hormonal imbalances that are very difficult or impossible to correct without eliminating or drastically reducing soy in the diet. i have seen soy as an ingredient added to tea bags!
1018329 tn?1448980165 I am a breastfeeder but I saw the topic about soy, I know for myself at one point in time I was having soy protein shakes and this caused diarrhea in both my husband and I daily. It wasn't until we stopped using soy protein supplements that this stopped. So I am interested in seeing if this changed for your baby or what occurred.
Avatar f tn There have been cases of vegetarian mothers who consumed massive amounts of soy protein who gave birth to babies with birth defects because of the phytoestrogen effects. Baby boys suffered the most obviously, because they were born with holes in their little scrotums that had to be surgically repaired immediately after birth as an emergency. Girls end up suffering later when they hit puberty.
Avatar f tn It should not be taken for more than five days in a row every month. If you exceed the duration it can have negative effects on ovulation causing imbalances in your natural cycle. It is best to discuss your concerns and queries with your doctor about its usage and possible effects. Do write to me again. Best wishes and regards!
963249 tn?1247190497 You can get soy protein from soy milk, isolated soy protein powders, tofu, soy cheese, and other products made from soy. Be careful, however, when purchasing isolated soy protein supplements, because you certainly don't want soy protein made with sweeteners. Maybe a soy protein drink would be more beneficial. Just a suggestion. North....any comments or suggestions are widely appreciated.
87651 tn?1259602403 Hi there, I have read a lot of negative information on consuming soy when you are a thyroid patient. The slimfast sounds like it is probably very small amounts though. Just stay away from Soy foods and consuming a lot of products with soy in it. How do you like being on Armour? I am going to get switched here shortly.
Avatar f tn Common Western foods and beverages are fermented, such as The soy used in our country, however, is primarily non-fermented soy in the form of soy-protein isolate and soy milk. It is the non-fermented form of soy that is causing so many of the problems with soy foods. The soy industry would have you believe that Asians eat lots of soy. Since Asians suffer less chronic illness than most Western people, then soy must be a healthy food. How much soy do Asians actually eat?
Avatar f tn Well - you have got to have a liquid - so the options are water, milk, or soy/almond/rice/coconut milk. Then you have to have some source of protein. Other than protein powder, you are pretty limited. You don't want to use raw egg. You could use nuts or peanut butter. Other sources of protein such as cooked meat or fish wouldn't be particularly appetizing in a smoothie.
Avatar f tn One study says no more than 30 mgs of soy protein per week, another says as little as 30 mg of soy isoflavones per day can affect people with hypothyroidism. I am also having difficulty in finding how much that is (e.g. is 1 mg soy protein equal to 1 mg soy isoflavones; the articles I have found state that 30 soy isoflavones is the amount found in 5-8 ounces of soy milk which only contains 10 mg of soy protein).
Avatar f tn I tried googling this earlier in my pregnancy and didn't like what I found... that none are really "good" for me or baby right now. I went with veggie & fruit smoothies and used soy milk as it had higher protein content (vs other but mills). But I want to know if anyone else has found out anything else!
Avatar f tn tofu, soy milk, soy yogurt, soy pudding, and soy ice cream. Incomplete proteins you need to combine foods such as beans and rice, pasta with vegetables, peanut butter and bread, nuts in salad, and beans with pasta. You can try any of the above to get protein in her for each meal. Milkshakes (milk, fresh fruit, and ice cream) are also good for extra protein too.
Avatar f tn Soy is known to cause stomach problems maybe stop and see if the pain subsides
9990306 tn?1407113138 t need animal foods to get protein -- nuts, seeds, and beans are all excellent sources of protein. Soy is the most complete of vegetable proteins that you can make a lot of things with, but any bean combined with a whole grain usually gives you a pretty complete protein. You don't need a protein shake, nobody does, for proper health -- shakes are either a shortcut for people in a hurry or for people trying to add lean muscle. Otherwise, you should get plenty from your regular meals.
Avatar f tn We like almond milk the best, but it depends on the reasons for going off dairy. If it's lactose that is the problem for her, then soy is probably fine and tastes great, but if it's milk protein, then I have read that about 50% of people who can't tolerate dairy protein also can't tolerate soy protein. My son is one of them... which is why we ended up on the almond milk. Goat milk is also a nightmare for my son, he reacts worse to it than even cows milk!
Avatar n tn My midwife said to have it. Soy is not got andthats in protein stuff but Iif it says soy protein isolate thats okay.
