Common Questions and Answers about Sources of omega 3 like flax and walnut

omega-3

Avatar n tn Parents of ADHD children and ADHD adults who wish to utilize omega-3 fatty acids as a method of modifying their behavior should use both flax and seafood sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Flax provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the master omega-3 fatty acid from which other omega-3 fatty acids are synthesized. Seafood provides DHA directly which appears to be a vital omega-3 fatty acid for modifying behavior of ADHD children and adults. The rate of conversion of ALA to DHA is quite low.
518994 tn?1212242047 The highest, most concentrated source of Omega 3 fatty acids are marine lipids (from fish) or Krill, and Flax Seed oil for dogs (cats are obligate carnivores and cannot metabolize flax seed oil as well as marine sources). Olive oil is a good source but not as concentrated. A Fox Terrier would require 500mg Omega-3 Fatty acids daily, preferably in divided doses. The Omega-3 fatty acid product can be manufactured for humans or pets. As Dr.
Avatar f tn Hi to eevryone! Your cardiologist may not know it, but flax oil hardly converts to omega-3's; only 2% at best of the omega-3 linolenic acid component is converted to the useful omega-3 fats DHA and EPA, and that is IF there are no omega-6 fats competing for uptake. Other than that, the linolenic acid in flax oil has no known use in the body, and flax oil obviously has shortcomings by containing a relatively high amount of inflammatory omega-6 linoleic acid.
Avatar n tn My husband has severe dry eyes, and has started taking omega 3 and flax seed oil. It is working very well, but his dose (after gradual increase to a point of benefit) is more than recommended. Can he overdose on 3 times the normal dose of purified omega 3 fish oil..the brand he takes is Health from the Sea PFO pure fish oil liquid. He takes twice the dose of the flax seed oil (same brand name).
Avatar f tn Please don't misunderstand me. I am not advocating for not taking any multivitamins; I'm just saying that for specific vitamins and minerals, there are food alternatives that are better - if you incorporate them into your daily diet. I actually take Centrum and a folic acid supplement daily since they give me most of the vitamins that I need and don't cost much, but was spending alot of money on prenatal Omega-3 pills. The flax seed is an alternative to Omega-3 only.
Avatar m tn An interesting question would be, does the source of omega 3 matter, assuming this study is true (and the article cited by Gymdandee suggests it isn't a good study for this). Some have argued that too much flax might be a bad idea.
Avatar m tn Good sources of protein include lean meats, fish, poultry, nuts, seeds and legumes. Healthy carbohydrate sources include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. You might also consider buying a protein powder and drink shakes between your meals and after exercising. Personally i use QuickMass from Allmax Nutrition. I was was 118 lbs when i started it 1 month ago and now I'm 129.
Avatar m tn It makes them tons worse. I take a tsp. of flax seed each day and blend them in a smoothie and that doesn't seem to bother me. What brand of plant based omega 3 do you use? After my bad experiences with krill oil, I'm kind of scared to take anything but whole flax seeds.
671251 tn?1236116671 It also said that flax seed and flax seed oil are high in Omega 3 fatty acids without the worry of mercury. Flax seed flour is good to add to foods in place of some of the flour. It has to be ground or crushed to be used by our bodies. Walnuts are another good source too. I found a good recipe for salmon cakes in Joy of Cooking. Here is the recipe I used.
475555 tn?1469304339 Here are a couple of interesting URLs for people into fatty acid supplementation: http://www.****.ca/english/index.php?p=suppliers1&mp=suppliers#Bioriginal (a list of Canadian wholesalers/retailers of fatty acid products and concentrates; and Canada is the world's biggest producer of flax and flax seed) http://www.****.com/products/?
1655526 tn?1330655629 So im not crazy after all.. I have told doctors and other people that fish and omega 3 bother my arrthymia. Noone believed me but I know what happens and it isnt pretty. I stay away from it. I did find an article once that said its good for the heart but people with arrythmias it can make them go into life threating ones.
Avatar f tn I use a stabalized ground flax seed product to provide about 2/3 of my daily Omega-3 and a high quality fish oil capsule for the final third. The flax adds a pleasant nutty flavor to the small portion of yogurt I mix it with. I use products with (if I remember right) a 6:1 ratio of Omega-3:Omega-6. I get plenty of O-sixes from my diet (they are easy for most of us) but don't eat nearly enough foods rich in O-threes to keep a good ratio going.
Avatar m tn You might also not be eating enough sources of HDL, but you can just increase your fish oil or krill oil or hemp seed oil or flax seed oil -- there are other sources of omega 3 oils, though only fish that eat seaweed have a good level of DHA.
Avatar m tn This substance is the hallmark of many age-related neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, and it accumulates in our brains as we age. In this study, researchers used 45 male rats, aged 19 months, and divided them equally into three diet groups. control, 6 percent walnut and 9 percent walnut. (They noted that the 6 percent walnut diet fed to the rats is equivalent to 1 oz. of walnuts per day for humans.
1976414 tn?1326171323 Husband taking Udos's oil (similiar to flax - a 3-6-9 Omega) and has been successful. I think the answer is yes, as long as you've got 20 g of fat in there.
Avatar m tn Plus there are healthy fats like the omega 3 fats found in fish. Mono-saturated fats found in olive oil, nuts and avocado are healthy fats, and are a dietary staple in Mediterranean countries that have a far lower rate of heart disease than America. Even moderate amounts of saturated fats from healthy organic or natural sources are OK, although you still should avoid the trans fats so common in processed baked goods, frozen foods and margarines.
Avatar f tn I've purchased galic and parsley tablets as well as Omega 3-6-9 tablets in the hope of getting my colesterol levels to a normal numbering. But today I read that Omega 6 isn't that good as it could counter the effect of Omega 3 and induce inflammation. Now I"m wondering if I just spent 30$ for nothing. What do you think?
612551 tn?1450022175 Flax seed is generally considered a good diet supplement for omega 3 and other good stuff - for humans. Is it good to add to dog food, either canned or home cooked? I suppose if you dog eats Kibble with water some could be mixed in there too.
Avatar n tn But hemp seeds and flax seeds, while containing some Omega 6 fats, contain high amounts of Omega 3 fats, which are essential for health. Some Omega 6 is also essential for health, as is Omega 9 and other fats.
Avatar m tn I wonder whether you will throw similar light on the use of Flax seed and Flax seed oil. There are many websites on the internet. If important aspects are given in a simple manner, it will prove useful to all community members.Dr.Budwig protocol is also an important work on Flax seed. Please do write on this subject. Thanks.
250155 tn?1485295939 does anyone here use this on a daily basis? i've read a lot of good things about it and we just got some. we bought ground flax seed... but we haven't used it yet. can anyone tell me any other things about it i may not have read or possible different ways that you use it? thank you.
Avatar f tn I would listen to your cardiologist or internal medicine doctor if they are very familiar with this situation. Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil can both sometimes increase bleeding in patients taking blood thinners like coumadin (warfarin), apirin, and plavix. In diabetics on glucose lowering drugs there is some evidence that suggest that flaxseed oil may increase fasting blood sugar levels.
403156 tn?1290150018 My doc can't stress the benefits of Omega 3 and Flax Seed powder enough. He says there is real life research showing all the benefits they have on mood, not to mention, heart and arteries. If you take Omega # my doc says if it smells like fish, it's a cheap grade. Go for the higher grade oils. They shouldn't have an odor.
213398 tn?1202670474 The scientist attribute the lack of Alzhiemers to the Tumeric. Flax Seed Oil (Omega 3) is GREAT for everyone....(I only use organic products) and try to get it in my food sources first ...fresh salmon, Flax seed...but also take an organic supplement. My doctor highly recomends it, but again I was taking it before I was Dx. I just started mixing Acai juice in my fruit drinks/ on ocassion(mainly because it is so expensive) never heard of any negative effects...again I am new to this one....
Avatar m tn t just one substance, Omega three are fatty acids just like Omega 6 fatty acids found in oils and meat etc. Omega 3 are EPA, DHA, and ALA . Some experts have said that the balance between Omega 6 fatty acids and Omega 3 is key, but just as many say this is nonsense. Omega 3 do have benefits, mainly reducing inflammation in the body, such as in the arteries or joints. It can also reduce your clotting factor if taken in too high doses, causing excessive bleeding.
Avatar f tn You should be taking omega 3 in any case. Statins, by lowering cholesterol, also interfere with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients, which of course includes omega 3. The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL.
Avatar m tn I wonder if this is a PATM symptom or just me. Whenever I put one full tablespoon of Omega-3 oil (in this case flaxseed oil but it doesn't matter if it is plant-based or animal-based) into my lunch about 2-3 hours later I kinda fall into a coma/unresistable fatigue and when waking up I have this feeling of being doomed and can't stand anybody although normally I'm a very relaxed kind person.
Avatar m tn Healthy fats include omega-3 essential fatty acids sources like tuna, salmon, flax, and walnuts. Good sources of protein include lean meats, fish, poultry, nuts, seeds and legumes. Healthy carbohydrate sources include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It may be easier to eat five or six smaller balanced meals per day rather than eating three large meals, especially if he's not used to eating much at one sitting.
