Common Questions and Answers about Social anxiety public speaking

anxiety

Avatar f tn I am a graduate student. I have a fear of public speaking and a stage/performance fear when I speak in front of new people or students of my class. A few of my classes require that I give powerpoint presentations in front of the class. When I am on the spot, my voice and hands become shaky - I sometimes lose concentration to the point that I cannot get words out of my mouth even though I go in front of the class very well prepared.
Avatar m tn I've been suffering from anxiety for many years now. I'm on Xanax and Aurorix. l take 0.125 Xanax only at night and 150 mg of Aurorix twice a day. This is after the discussion with my doctor. My anxiety is very much controlled. However, my anxiety becomes very bad when I become the center of attention. I dread public speaking but it can't be avoided sometimes. Do people with anxiety disorder dread the same thing as I do? Is it because I'm taking too little dose of Xanax?
Avatar m tn I have had social anxiety for many years now, I never had it when I was a child I think it came onto me because I was a late bloomer in school so I always felt like I wasn't part of the crew in school. I always felt like I was behind the times. I suffer from social anxiety and blushing. Every time I speak to people in public I start to blush. It doesn't matter how many people I talk to, it can be maybe 1 or 2 and it depends on where it is.
Avatar f tn many people have a fear of public speaking. And remember anxiety and panic can come at the most inoppertune times even if we have previously been through the exact same experience panic free time after time. I also agree that you should not expect perfection and not be too hard on yourself. Just the fact that you get up there is something that you should give yourself credit for; that is no easy feat to accomplish in my opinion. Do you have other social situations that you get anxious in?
5148952 tn?1364321766 You are correct that the Abilfy will not help with your social anxiety. And while I do not mean to imply that your social worker has not helped you, very few, if any, social workers are trained psychologists who can help you with this problem. It may be worth considering professional therapy to beat this phobia once and for all.
1322152 tn?1282507546 so this might be a long one, im 16 and a junior in high school, and me and my mom think i might have a social anxiety disorder, its really hard to explain but ill try, every single year at the beginning of the school year since 7th grade, i sill freak out,my biggest fear is throwing up at school/in public!
Avatar m tn I know many people that go to various groups that can help with public speaking or are there any social anxiety groups that you can attend in your area? For me, anxiety is so much easier to deal with once I learned more about it. It can be very confusing and quite scary at first, but as with all things, more we learn about something the less daunting it seems....keep us posted!
Avatar m tn It will help. But if you're referring to public speaking to a large group of people, I suggest you take one prior to that day to make sure it isn't too sedating for you. If it's being prescribed for social anxiety, it will calm you down allowing you to feel better about conversing with others. The more you are able to talk, the easier it will get. Best wishes.
Avatar m tn Hey, like mammo adviced you, there's ways to get help for you social anxiety. I've suffered from social anxiety for years and I didn't want to do any presentations at school at all coz I would start to shake and sweat and my face would be all red. The a doctor gave me propranolol which is a safe med (doesn't have any bad side effects) that aliviates all the symptoms.
Avatar m tn Have you ever considered counseling or maybe even groups that help with public speaking? Many people are uncomfortable in some social settings, but you can definitely confront your fear...keep us posted!
Avatar f tn I'm not a nurse, but I would visit with your primary care doctor if you have one. I'm guessing if maybe you have a social anxiety issue at minimum. To not remember where you are is the part that worries me, because even though I have social anxiety issues, I don't forget where I am. I forget names, but that's how I've been for years since my spine injuries. I have ADD and have to use to do lists.
Avatar m tn But as I read your post I get the sense of social anxiety more than anything else. Were you find social situations awkward? There is medication for anxiety alone. But that would boil down to what your doctor sees wrong with you. My way of looking at some anti-depressants is that can make an anxiety sufferer worse because it is lifting them. As the drug is meant to do. Lift the mood. Anxiety medication is to relax you. Bring you down. I'm not saying all anti-depressants are bad for anxiety.
Avatar m tn s even worse is that I am a shy person and convinced that I have social anxiety issue, so the need to make annoying throat-clearing sound embarrasses me. I tried not to do that, and it eventually leads to s strong urge to throw up, often spitting out mucus and saliva in toilet. Now I am afraid of public places, even visiting shopping malls or cinema is terrifying (unless I am near to toilet). Besides that, I feel that this throwing up issue has also somehow link itself to my fears.
Avatar n tn Hi, a few months ago i started having tongue cramps when i was nervous or anxious, such as during public speaking, however my cramps have started happening more often. They are often accompanied with slight lip twitches or 'grimmacing', and usually happen when i'm talking to people. I have recently moved to university which has been fairly stressful and was wondering if this could cause it?
Avatar n tn Social anxiety can be a bear; many people have it especially when talking in front of groups. Have you ever tried to confront the issue through various exercises or talk therapy? I remember back in college they even offered courses on improving your public speaking abilities, so don't think you are alone in experiencing this. Talking publicly comfortably sometimes takes a lot of practice!
494087 tn?1257793207 I was diagnosed with social anxiety and panic disorder a year ago. I take remeron and klonopin but the doctor says only to take them at night. I think I need some medication to get through the day but I am afraid to tell him I am having trouble getting through the day. I always have a butterfly feeling in my stomach and when I have to go in public I get very nervous and feel like everyone is looking at me. I guess my question is does anyone else feel this way and what should I do?
Avatar f tn That is why I refrain from using my phone in public unless I have to. In my experience though, as far as withdrawing from social situations, I think it makes it harder to get back into it after awhile. Continually putting yourself into social situations will eventually make you used to it, as long as you don't put yourself in extremely difficult situations, like huge crowds. The more you socialize, the more natural it becomes and the easier it gets.
Avatar f tn Will taking a small amount of Xanax help with calming nerves for public speaking? Taking a small amount like 0.25 ?
Avatar m tn In my opinion, many people experience social anxiety; especially when you are stressed out. I believe you are doing the right thing by seeing a psychologist about this. You are learning to confront and deal with your fears. Just be patient though...it can take awhile to learn how to deal with it sometimes. Keep your head up and don't beat yourself up if you have your bad days with this. Keep us posted!
4358817 tn?1353346212 As of the past month I have been noticing that my face is flushing more than usual. I am not sure if it is due to new stressors, social anxiety, or my medications (Adderall 15XR and Seroquel 50mg @ night). I have been on these two medications for the past three years with no side effects so I am pretty sure that is not the sole cause of my redness. Prior to the past month when this started, when I talked in a large group my face would turn a hint of pink and fade in a few moments.
899491 tn?1243773627 Is it possible to have social anxiety with bp? I don't do the spending sprees or have extramartial affairs but I certainly feel paranoia. I start withdrawing after my manic episode. It all starts with not feeling comfortable around people and I feel highly irritable....it feels like I want to jump out of my skin. I have trouble speaking too. I would get sentences all mixed up or start stammering away when I have to talk to someone. I start to withdraw into my little world.
Avatar m tn I dont avoid engaging in public speaking,i try speaking in public the least chance i get but very short statements.I did some few reading about beta blockers and i saw that it help relieve anxiety . i once complained to my Dr but He says is nothing to worry about.I was given vitamin B6 and Magnesium combined for tremors. If Beta blockers help with anxiety why does my heart races, voice and hand still shake in public activities like speaking and suturing infront of my classmates.
Avatar n tn I agree with specialmom - I suspect (strongly) that social anxiety is the issue. It is not unusual for children with SA to not use public washrooms or not want their photographs taken or to not want to participate in team sports - is your son able to speak at school, eat at school, use the washroom at school, learn at school and interact with the other children/adults - please address these questions to your son's teacher.
10912630 tn?1413770190 You have social anxiety....I have the same thing I hate going out and being around people I don't know or crowds of people, don't feel like I have anything in common with people....go see a psychiatrist..I am on Effexor XR and Topomax seems to help a bit. At least I can deal a little better now. Good luck I hope you find peace.
Avatar n tn -- maybe This entire posting describes social anxiety - the not speaking, the silliness, good student, socially inept, clinging, etc. I might suggest you google the phrase "social anxiety and children" or "anxiety and children" or similar words/phrases to better educate yourself about this issue. There is a lot of good information on the internet as well as the titles of many books which can be purchased on-line, in bookstores, or borrowed from one's public library.
Avatar m tn There are self-help books available that will teach you many tips and tricks to deal with this anxiety. If possible, take a Public Speaking class.........I did and it was the best thing I'd done for myself at that time. I still got some anxiety beforehand, but I had learned so many ways to deal with it, believe it or not, public speaking actually became fun. One of the most important things I learned was to be totally prepared.
