Avatar f tn When present, this gene variant increases the risk of lung cancer, especially the risk for small cell lung cancer. Your mother may or may not have this gene variant but that doesn’t mean that you have it. And, if you do have it, the increased risk, in no way, means that you will get lung cancer, small cell or other, especially now that you have quit smoking. The role of lung cancer screening tests is still not clear.

Avatar m tn there are statistics that show if you quit smoking after being diagnosed with lung cancer, it does increase your chance of survival. i mention this because generally smokers getting lung cancer are long time smokers so if it does benefit them, then i think it would apply to someone who's been a long-time smoker but has not been diagnosed with cancer. either way...i don't know if you've ever quit smoking before, but it's worth it just because many things feel better.

To improve lung function practice breathing exercises and quit smoking. Lung function tests could further help in evaluation.

Avatar f tn You should look upon these findings as confirmation that your smoking cessation was an excellent decision and give thanks that you quit at a time when your measured lung function is near normal and very unlikely to get any worse if you “stick to your guns” and never smoke again. That is another way of saying that your lung disease will never progress to “end stage COPD.
Avatar m tn The first question – in persons with COPD prone to frequent exacerbations there is evidence to suggest that the frequency of exacerbations may be reduced with the use of the three medications you list. As there is often a permanent loss of pulmonary function with an exacerbation, reducing exacerbations may slow the progressive loss of pulmonary function. Whether or not this increases longevity is still being debated. Second – the answer depends on the manner of obstruction.
Avatar m tn Unless the whole exercise, diet and smoking cessation is just a smokescreen to suck the life out of the patient. I know its crazy but its like I don't want to wear a mask when I sleep there has to be an alternative.
