Smell of ammonia in nose

Common Questions and Answers about Smell of ammonia in nose

ammonia

The ammonia smell is in my nose and nowhere else, not not urine, not my skin, Its strange. And I drink 8 - 10 glasses of water a day.
When I do any cardiovascular exercise and start to get winded, I get a very strong ammonia like smell in my nose, like it is coming out of my lungs. This smell is not coming from outside my body, but internally. It's almost like the alcohol smell that goes up the back of your nose when you drink a shot of liquor. I have had this all my life and just sort of assumed it was the same for everybody, but apparently other people don't have the same thing. What could be causing it?
For a few weeks now I've been noticing wafts of what I can only describe as the smell of Ammonia. I cant be sure where the smell is coming from - it's quite obvious if I breath in really deep through my nose a few times. I dont think it;s in my sweat as I run 6k three times a week and my running clothes dont smell all, so I'm assuming the smell is either from my breath, or actually in my sinuses.
I am overwright but consider myself athletic. I can smell the ammonia in my nose and on my breath. I've had blood work done and my liver function is normal, ammonia levels normal, blood glucose and a1c is normal. I have been diagnosed with non -alcoholic fatty liver and I have insulin resistance. Anything would be helpful!
I found this post while searching because as I have aged, starting in my 20's, sometimes the smell of my skin and nose smell differently in different ways, usually a weird bready-chalky smell. I have found out that that means I have a candida infection, which is not just a yeast infection in the way an internist would define it to us ( which is a parasite infection-usually it's explained as 'microbial' ) Today i am very itchy and smell funny and well, it's a long story.
-I can trigger the smell at any moment I choose(I usually do not do this for the heck of it) just by blowing my nose or taking a deep breath in through my nose. It lingers for hours! I can smell it every single second until I am unconscious in sleep. I don't smell it in the morning upon waking. After brushing my teeth though, I usually have to blow my nose...

I felt a strange burning in the back of my head and almost gagged from the ammonia smell in my sinus'. It is starting to fade now, but I must admit it scared me. Anyone have any clues?
Day after i ran out of antibiotics no drainage but started to smell bad smell, I finally figured it out, the smell is in my nose. Drove my self nuts thinking it was an abcess from one of my pets. It's been 4 days and now it's getting stronger its cross between rotting flesh and ammonia, it stinks, and stings just like ammonia sitting in front of me. I go back to dentist on Tuesday to have more extractions and I'm worried. What can I do about this in the meantime ?
I to have a bad smell in my nose. It seems like everytime I breathe through my nose that bad odor pops up. it's very uncomfortable for me. I'd really like to solve this problem. please help.
It could smell like dog-poop, old cheese, ammonia, a burning smell, etc. The smell comes on, often, as a result of a cold or sinus infection. Some, not all, of these smells are caused by an anaerobic bacteria thriving in the upper sinuses, and I was able to remove mine with a Flip-Turn Sinus Flush, and many other people have had success with it as well: http://www.medhelp.
My doctor thinks I'm crazy... Says if I had enough ammonia in my blood to smell it in my nose, I'd have serious mental issues. I always thought ammonia was a later stage cirrhosis issue and not an early warning. I didn't have this problem when I was drinking more. It has only developed during (slow) withdrawal. I know lots of fats come out of your liver during alcohol detox and I'm hoping this is just a artifact.
i do know, that my sense of smell is extremely hyper-sensitive since going on the meds....and thus....some of the humourous stuff!...so very sorry to have made you feel as though your question was not serious...i apoligise.

I'm a 28 year old mom of 3 and 3 weeks ago today I had my tonsils out, a septoplasty in the left side of my nose, and polyps removed from the right side of my nose. I had a horrible recovery from the tonsillectomy and septoplasty but the polyp removal wasn't so bad. About a week ago I started having a terrible rotten smell in the right sidde of my nose. It was so bad that it almost made me sick. Well this morning I had gotten up choking on the mucus draining into my throat.
My experiences with Afrin have been a love/hate type of thing. I'm the opposite of a mouth breather so I am sure to always have nose spray in the rare case of a cold. However, the older I've gotten (at the old age of 27 now, but started when I was 14) the more my taste/smell sense has gone out the window during use. I've always figured the lack of senses was caused by the cold. However, the last time I got sick I couldn't smell or taste for almost a month after I was back to normal.
For at least 2 to 3 months I've been experiencing ammonia type body odor to a weird meaty body type odor. It's like I can actually smell ammonia in my nose. Sometimes it feels as if it's in my throat. Other times I can taste a "meaty" type of odor smell? I know this sounds weird but please bear with me on this. It's not my imagination working over time either! My car and apartment takes on my body odor.
I have been having this weard acid smell feeling in my nose, it co mes and goes, I have had it for about a month now. It feels as if when you smell ammonia , and your nose kind of feels like is burning inside.... I've got a strong burning sensation in my nose which is very annoying. If I open my mouth, I can feel the burn in the front of my teeth and tongue. This has been going on over a year. I've read about the burning tongue symptom, but not the nasal area. Lately, I've been experiencing another odd body change. Sometimes when I eat or drink certain foods, I get this strange, pungent taste. Kind of like horseradish, cilantro and ammonia mixed together.
The mouth smell problem was greatly removed but the smell from nose and bad taste in my throat was very much disturbing me in the evening. I went to ENT specialist. He did sinoscopy and found that there is no fault in sinus. There is slight bacterial infection in throat, tonsils and sinus. He advised me to try antiseptic betadine (providone iodine IP 2%) which is not helping me at all. He told me that it will take approximately one month to get rid of bad smell.
Some people, including myself, have had a smell that only they can smell. It could smell like dog-poop, old cheese, ammonia, a burning smell, etc. The smell comes on, often, as a result of a cold or sinus infection. After putting the table into the car and returning to the house, I had an overpowering scent take over in my nose. It reminded me of nail polish remover fumes. My husband and daughter were both home and said they did not smell anything unusual. I will add that I was ill with a nasty head and chest cold. It totally baffled me that noone else could smell this strong chemical odour because the smell was so powerful to me.

my doctor gave me the perfect way to get rid of the ammonia splitters in my nose. first you need an atibiotic like augmenten, flonase nasal spay, but most impotratnlty nielmed salt spray for the nose {this product is amazing, use it 4 times a day for ten days and the smell is gone!} also you need a mucinex 1 every 4 to 6 hours. and before you go to sleep you take a qu-tip and put triple antibiotic, like neosporin, up both sides of the nose. this keeps the infection from spreading.
I'm getting some weird symptoms and wonder if they're related to a nutrition deficiency. I've got a strong burning sensation in my nose which is very annoying. If I open my mouth, I can feel the burn in the front of my teeth and tongue. This has been going on over a year. Lately, I've been experiencing another odd symptom. Sometimes when I eat or drink certain foods, I get this strange, pungent taste. Why do I have the constant smell of smoke in my nose. It used to be just an occasional thing, but lately it seems to be all the time. I am concerned that this is a symptom of something I don't know about. The smell is strong. I used to notice it about a half hour after taking my Allegra-D 12 hr. tablets, but now I smell it much more often. Am I going crazy or is there something to this I'm not aware of. Has anyone else experienced this? Please help?
yes I was in a casino over the weekend and stayed up late for two nights in a row. I can't get the smell out of my nose it makes me sick. I tried rinsing my nose - I put neosporin with a q tip to see if it was the lining. Now I really try to just breathe through my mouth - not as bad that way! But will talk to my DR. soon.
