985832 tn?1249126599 Hello I am new here . Hi everyone. My question is what can I do about sleep problems? I never sleep through the night. I get up several times during the night and I have a hard time relaxing even when I can't keep my eyes open. Just when I laydown to go to sleep its like a light switch comes on and I am wide awake again. It really drags me down during the day. I do walk everyday and I take melatonin at night but even though it makes me really sleepy I never stay asleep.
Avatar f tn Hello there, You can try melatonin which can be bought from a food supplement store. Melatonin is basically the ''sleep hormone'' it it produced naturally from the pineal gland in your brain and light and darkness have the most influence on it's production. More light, less melatonin, dark = more melatonin produced to induce sleep. It also have powerful antioxidant effect, boost your immune system and can prevent ischemic damages.
Avatar f tn Hi there i suffer from sleep apnea they found i had it through a sleep study my family Doctor sent me for it maybe you could do that...... good luck..............
1032715 tn?1315984234 Hi reading all this info on sleep aids with alot of interest. Worked shift work most of my life and thus alot of sleep problems, just interested to know if you've ever run across my problem with melatonin where it did absolutely the opposite and made me extremely hyper...to the extent of not a minutes sleep..tried it 3 nights in a row because I wasn't putting the connection together at first. interestingly my son said it did the same for him...I couldn't even guess what mg.
Avatar f tn Kudos on your clean time. I'm clean 15 days. I too have sleep problems. I've always had sleep problems, but after WDs from vikes I REALLY have sleep trouble. I have a script for Ambien. It's the lesser of the two evils and easy to use as prescribed. I take a melatonin and 1/2 of a 10mg ambien (I use pill cutter) I then quarter the other half. I wake up to go to the bathroom about 4 hours later and take another quarter. So far so good.
Avatar f tn Prescription sleep medication, over the counter sleep aids, a warm electric blanket on the sofa w/a good movie. Melatonin does absolutely nothing for me. Many swear it's like valium for them.
798555 tn?1292787551 It is my sleep issues that led me to discover my thyroid problems. I wake up to 8 times a night with night sweats. (completely soaked) I am peri-menapausal, but I have absolutely no hot flashes during the day and no other menapausal symptoms and the doc seems to think that they are so extreme because of thyroid issues. I have been on a long road over the last year and am having my thyroid removed on the 3rd because of size, compression symptoms and inconclusive biopsies.
Avatar n tn I do want to add though, not all sleep problems are caused by a lack of melatonin....so melatonin will not help everyone. Simple as that!
Avatar n tn sounds like some theanine (like a valium...) and maybe some melatonin (for sleep, reset biological sleep clock) would be in order.....Sleep and anxiety will be some of the last things to finally let go when they do.........I always preferred the diphenhydramine myself - benadryl - that would be OTC ........Read the health pages ------you cant know too much about this situation - and good luck- congrats on the clean time......its a start.........
Avatar n tn Have you tried melatonin tablets? Go to the link below, it's got all the info... http://en.wikipedia.
327369 tn?1326119908 How many of you struggle with sleep problems even when you seem to be medicated properly? Just sick of it here and needing to vent. I sleep so great some nights and others it is a struggle.....I am either wired, heart is palpitating, etc. and then I get anxious because I cannot sleep and know that I will be tired at work the next day. I have some xanex that helps sometimes and I have tried melatonin but nothing is great at helping me. I do not like lunesta or ambien because of side effects.
Avatar m tn That's interesting, I've been taking melatonin for over a year (since getting clean) and I still feel mentally blah a lot. I wonder if that is a contributing factor. Thanks for the info. Btw, your racing heart is from detox. At 25 days, you are still in wd even though less acute. It is very normal and it will slowly but surely pass.
Avatar f tn They certainly have sedative effects, and all sedatives mess with sleep; people on benzodiazepines chronically usually end up with sleep problems as well. Whenever a sedating medication is wearing off, the withdrawal includes activation, which disrupts sleep-- and people on opiates for a long time will attest that they seem to always be withdrawing! I will do some reading and see if I can find a more 'scientific' answer-- something including circadian rhythms and corticosteriods!
Avatar n tn It affects sleep itself, decreasing sleep latency, increasing sleep efficiency, and increasing the total sleep time. Melatonin acts on the melatonin receptors. Other neurotransmitters are neuropeptides like orexin-A and orexin-B which are basically involved in wakefulness. Excess of these peptides can also lead to insomnia. The investigations which will help to diagnose the type and cause for insomnia are Polysomnography, Multiple sleep latency test and Actigraphy .
Avatar n tn No. Melatonin is not safe in pregnancy. However you can take benadryl to help you sleep.
Avatar n tn As she said, the pineal glad is responsible for producing melatonin which regulates sleep patterns and efficiency, so if you have a cyst there and suffer sleep-related issues, why could it not be possible the two are related? Seems logical to me (& most of those withthe cyst!

Avatar f tn Is there any sleep suppliments for those with liver disease? Is melatonin safe on occasional basis?
Avatar f tn ) as a healthy way to aid sleep. Has worked very well for me, and so-so for hubby, as he has had on and off sleep problems for quite some time. Mostly, we realize it is due to other health issues he has (lower back issues, pulmonary issues, and extreme cryo-globuanemia affects) - but has gotten significantly worse now while on treatment. We've been through the gamut of doctors, and basically had very bad care for a long time.
Avatar m tn s a combination on valarium root, melatonin and thyamine. It works well getting you to sleep. Still a little bit of an issue, but im averaging about 5.5 hours a day now. Plus a hot shower right before helped! Good luck my friend!
Avatar m tn The best thing your friend could do at this point would be to get a consultation with a specialist in both pulmonology and sleep medicine. If he's already seeing a sleep pulmonologist, he needs two be honest about how various treatments haven't worked for him, and what he is or isn't willing to try.
Avatar f tn You can try some immodium for diarrhea. Many have tried the Melatonin for sleep and like it. You can get that pretty much anywhere. Sleep and energy are usually the last things to come back but they do so dont give up hope. The menopause thing?? All i can say is ugghhh to that one!!!
