Avatar n tn Hi, narcolepsy and sleepwalking are different sleep disorders. Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnagogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. It can however be regulated with medications. So, ensure to take them regularly and follow up with your doctor. Regards.
488264 tn?1226520307 Sudden Adult Death Syndrome has I believe been connected on ocassion to sleep paralysis, maybe from the sheer panic involved and the partial or even complete paralysis of the muscles involved in breathing. I have struggled secretly with this all my adult life, and only recently as it got so much worse brought it to the attention of my doctors. I do believe had I told them about it years ago they would have dismissed me as neurotic or something. WHY is this condition so poorly researched?
Avatar n tn Medications such as Sodium oxybate (Xyrem) may be prescribed as a cure for sleep paralysis in severe cases, but the best treatment for sleep paralysis is to reduce stress and get the proper amount of sleep" - http://www.medopedia.com/sleep-disorders/sleep-paralysis-treatment. Avatar n tn My husband has been on Xyrem since the fall of 2005. He now has a considerable amount of central sleep apnea and is being removed from Xyrem to prove that the apnea is indeed coming from the drug. He was diagnosed with narcolepsy, but I have never been real convinced of that because he has always been sleep deprived and depressed. The depression he would not admit until just the last year, and with him it is an "off-limits" subject.
Avatar f tn The reason your doctor wants full compliance is because using xyrem with a person who has even the slightest apnea could make it worse. Xyrem is a complete sedative to help your body reach each proper sleep stage and make your sleep more efficient. I'm sure it is uncomfortable having the air blow in your mask just hang in there one good night sleep with that combo and you'll feel like a million dollars!
Avatar f tn I would cook and sleep walk, and took a few extra pills while sleep walking and I even drove a few times. I want the Xyrem to work for me and keep me asleep and not bother my wife at night with all the side effects.
Avatar f tn ve been diagnosed with narcolpsy. same symptomd as you now i take xyrem and i still cant sleep at night this *****.
Avatar f tn I am onXYREM i have been for over a year. I have had so many problems with it. everyones answer is to up it. so now i'm on 4.5mg 2 times a night. The first dose does not make me tired but when i take the second dose i am hypersexual, sleep walk very loopy.
Avatar f tn Not only that, but it made me throw up every morning at least once, and the only way to make the nausea go away was to take another dose and go back to sleep. I was only on Xyrem for 3 1/2 months, because at the end I was taking 5-6 doses a day, and sleeping my life away. Once I stopped taking it, it became impossible for me to sleep. I've tried every drug out there and they all either work for some time and then stop because my tolerance builds or don't work at all.
589816 tn?1332976771 This is evident in the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. It can however be regulated with medications. So, ensure that he has them regularly and follow up with your doctor. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I am seriously considering throwing the Seroquel into the trash. I am so sick of it. I take this for sleep and it is by far the best drug for that purpose but I eat eat eat, like I haven't eaten all day after I take this. Today I had the bottle in my hand and I was going to toss it... I have other things that I can take to help me sleep but this works the best. I WANT to QUIT taking it. I try other things but but I keep GOING BACK because it works! Sick of it.
Avatar f tn 75g 2 times a night, i take a fish oil pill and vit b 12. I think if i was off of the xyrem i could do better but i dont sleep!!! at all, but during the day i'm fine everything is ok.
Avatar f tn However, no one has been able to answer the question about improving the stages I need to. I take Xyrem at night now so that I have two four hours blocks of solid sleep. The first 2 weeks I took it, I felt better than I had in over 10 years. (I was on Xyrem during the last two sleep studies.) After that, I returned to the unrefreshed sleep. I don't drink alcohol and I make sure that I don't eat at least 2 hours before I go to bed. I do appreciate your respose.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is no practical way to decipher between normal REM sleep and sleep paralysis. This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert.
Avatar n tn I have had problems with alpha wave intrusion and sleep paralysis for years. A couple of years ago, my doctor put me on a VERY low dose (10 mg) of the antidepressant nortriptyline, not for my sleep problems, but to help ease the pain of psoriatic arthritis. Once I was diagnosed with alpha wave intrusion, she bumped me up to 25 mg every night.
Avatar n tn what makes sleep paralysis happen? what can i do to reduce the risk of suffering sleep paralysis? what medication is avalible for this disorder? how effective is it? how does it help? i would be very gratefull to hear off you.
Avatar f tn I was recently told I have Narcolepsy with Cataplexy. I am a 74 year old Female and I am taking 20mg of Ritalin SR in the AM and 25mg of Imipram for the cataplexy in the PM. I get about 2 to 4 hrs sleep and the rest of the night I toss and turn. My Dr. told me she doesn't give meds for her patients to sleep. I am concerned about not sleeping and then taking Ritalin to keep me awake during the day.I feel my health will be affected. Is this the normal way to treat my condition?
Avatar m tn The symptoms you are experiencing could be due to an entity called sleep paralysis. When this happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior.
Avatar n tn I am a 20F, I am currently taking adderol 20mg when I need to study, and Xanax to help me with panic attack, as well as Suboxone. I have been suffering with hypnopompic Sleep Paralysis- I wake up, usually from a day-time nap, unable to move or talk. I always brushed it off as a dream until it lasted for about an hour, I fell on the floor and was found there. During this time of Paralysis i got overheated, excessive sweating, and couldnt stop biting my tongue.
Avatar f tn I experienced sleep paralysis for the first time last night. It was absolutely terrifying. I couldn't wake up no matter how hard i tried and when I was about to wake up I would be dragged right back into the horrible dream I was having Is anyone else experiencing sleep paralysis for the first time while pregnant.
Avatar f tn I actually get sleep paralysis as well... It won't harm your baby at all.
Avatar n tn Do you know why you get sleep paralysis? Such as stress, random sleep eppisodes, naps during the day, etc etc. Also, do you get pain in the neck? Like a stricking pain going up your neck, it's a fast but very uncomfortable experience.
Avatar f tn Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs either when falling asleep, or when awakening. When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.
