My feeling is that you're probably having frequent obstructions and arousals, which is causing your brain to get confused about which stage of sleep you're in and forgets to turn on your switch that allows you to move your muscles. If you have any degree of sleep-breathing problems, get that treated.
Avatar n tn I've been experiencing stomach pains for a long time. It all started when I was 13. I've been having intermittent stomach pains since then. I've also been admitted to the hospital thrice for intestinal paralysis. I've had sleeping problems for years now. Now, I can't sleep at all. I stay up all night, because of the pain. I can't eat because whenever I eat I throw up. When the stomach pain comes, it is intense. And it pains almost everyday. I become breathless soon.
1995699 tn?1327155353 Hello and hope you are doing well. In the initial phases of the sleep cycle and while awakening, we tend to be more conscious or alert. If we study the brain waves at these phases they tend to show the alert wave pattern, this could cause the awareness. If it is not interfering with your sleep schedules you don't have to worry. If it persists or is troublesome consult your doctor for assessment. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is no practical way to decipher between normal REM sleep and sleep paralysis. This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert.

Avatar m tn I've been reading up on it, it sounds about right. is it norml that i am seeing this stuff, in real life, in my room, during sleep REM?
Avatar m tn For example I can feel the texture of the couch and I can hear what show is playing on the tv. I sometimes feel a weight sitting on my chest making it hard for me to breathe (especially when I'm sick and have to breathe through my nose). I can move my finger tips, flicker my eyelids open, and hum loud noises attempting to scream for help. When I wake up it's almost as if Something was making me hold my breathe.
Avatar m tn I never had mentioned to anyone that this was happening to me because I thought something was very wrong with me. But know I know what it is I talk to people about it and then I find there are others out there that experience the same.

568812 tn?1379165794 All I knew is that it seemed so real and I would keep the lights on. I had the sleep paralysis also where I was trying to move but could not and trying to say, "Help" but the words would not come out. It was frightening. I would often recite the Lord's prayer. My daughter though has also had the paralysis in her sleep, so not sure if it is PSTD associated alone as she did not have the abusive childhood I did.

Avatar n tn sometimes i can wake/start breathing by concentrating hard on exhaling. which leads me to believe that it is connected in my case to the sleep apnea which i have also had for quite a while.
Avatar n tn use of EOG traces shows that eye movement is still possible during such episodes. When there is an absence of narcolepsy, sleep paralysis is referred to as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP). The paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger. Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations.
