Common Questions and Answers about Sleep paralysis wake up

sleep

Avatar n tn This is definitely not sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis occurs when a person is either falling asleep or coming out of sleep. And the person has dreams and other experiences which can be frightening, mostly. Sleep apnea is a condition where a person stops breathing for a short span of time (usually 10 seconds or so). Snoring is also observed. But sleep apnea does not allow a person to have deep sleep. He may just be normal.

Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is no practical way to decipher between normal REM sleep and sleep paralysis. This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert.
Avatar f tn I experienced sleep paralysis for the first time last night. It was absolutely terrifying. Avatar n tn If I wake my boyfriend up, he will wake up but his still talking and acting like his dreaming. He sometimes doesnt "wake up" for 20 mintues even though his eyes are open. It kind of freaks me out. Was wondering if anyone knew what this is or experiences it.
Avatar f tn This doesn't happen overnight, but at least once a week. I go to sleep and during a dream, I wake up but my body is still sleeping. I can hear everything going on around me, but my body isn't awake.I try to move or scream so my husband will wake me. I hear myself making noises, or feel myself moving, but it really isn't happening. It lasts for maybe 30 seconds or up to a minute. When I do wake up, I am very scared.
Avatar n tn Sleep paralysis occurs when you may go to sleep or may tend to wake up from sleep. It is a temporary phenomenon where you are incapable of moving your body or even part of it physically but keep trying to shout loudly or seek someone’s help. It may be lasting for a few seconds to minutes. It can repeat once again if you sleep and there is no physical injury to body, but you will be probably frightened with sweating and increased heart beat with shortness of breath.

568812 tn?1379165794 But at some point I started looking up on the internet, found out about sleep paralysis and read up whatever articles I could find. The ones I found most reassuring where the articles that had a scientific/medical base and left out the supernatural element. Also I learned the parlysis part is natural when the body gets into REM mode. What isn't quite natural is that you are awake durring that REM stage. That's why you may get hallucinations in that time.
Avatar f tn t exhausted and you might have them less. Also relax about it, and instead of trying to wake up try to go back to sleep. When I do that I find it easier to wake up. It's hard not to panic during it, but you are safe and it is okay.
Avatar f tn Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs either when falling asleep, or when awakening. When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.
Avatar n tn I am a 20F, I am currently taking adderol 20mg when I need to study, and Xanax to help me with panic attack, as well as Suboxone. I have been suffering with hypnopompic Sleep Paralysis- I wake up, usually from a day-time nap, unable to move or talk. I always brushed it off as a dream until it lasted for about an hour, I fell on the floor and was found there. During this time of Paralysis i got overheated, excessive sweating, and couldnt stop biting my tongue.

Avatar n tn what makes sleep paralysis happen? what can i do to reduce the risk of suffering sleep paralysis? what medication is avalible for this disorder? how effective is it? how does it help? i would be very gratefull to hear off you.
Avatar m tn Hi, suffered sleep paralysis for decades now. No voices etc, just paralysis. WHY doesn't the medical world take an interest in this phenomena, which is more common than I think is believed? It is left to the realm of cultural myths, alien abduction theories, generalized medical mumbling about anxiety - the definition of anything they do not understand or think will get them into trouble by not investigating.
Avatar f tn Looks like sleep paralysis. Sleep on your sides.
Avatar m tn What you are experiencing could be hallucinations and delusions and they can occur with certain medications, stress, sleep deprivation, in certain brain disorders and with schizophrenia or bipolar disorders. When sleep paralysis happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. You will need to consult your primary care physician for assessment. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn Sleep paralysis is the inability to move or talk at the beginning or end of sleep. Microsleep: Microsleeps are very brief sleep episodes during which people with narcolepsy continue to function (talk, put things away, etc.), and then awaken with no memory of the activities. Nighttime wakefulness: People with narcolepsy may have periods of wakefulness at night, with hot flashes, elevated heart rate, and sometimes intense alertness.

2038180 tn?1329861306 I knew i was asleep, but i couldnt wake myself up, i was lying there completely unable to move, with this shadow at my neck, and i was telling my brain it was a dream, but it meant nothing, extreme panic was going through me, and it was like i could feel the pain caused from whatever it was doing, i tried desperately to get a scream through my dream so that it would come out in reality in hopes my dad or someone would come in and wake me up, because i physically couldnt wake up, even though i k
Avatar f tn I see people/ things in my room and that's when the sleep paralysis starts because I fight like hell to wake myself up, but most cases I honestly feel like I'm awake and either I let it keep going until I finally snap out of it or when my husband will grab ahold of me. When I was younger I had really bad nightmares but taught myself to wake up when they were happening but I can't.
Avatar f tn This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. You will need to consult your primary care physician, who may schedule you for a polysomnogram (sleep test) to rule out sleep disorders and initiate appropriate therapy. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn Its your choice. You control it. I will myself to wake up. I just say its a dream, its a dream, its a dream, wake up, wake up , wake up over and over. And after a while even thou I am doubting it all I always, always wake up as do you. With no injuries. No evidence that it was real, because it isnt. Just complete silence and everything as it was. Its the brain getting confused. Its ok. You are ok. I promise you.
Avatar n tn When you wake up like this, does it feel like you can't move? Also, does it feel like your chest is extremely heavy like someone is on top of you? If so, this could be a parasomnia called sleep paralysis brought on by REM sleep. I have found that when doctors don't know what is happening, they blame it on stress, anxiety, or panic attacks especially in women.
Avatar f tn Hello. For a few years now there have been times when as I'm falling asleep, it feels like someone grabs gives my leg a hard pull (it happened last night, actually). And there are other times when if I'm having a dream, and something in my dream makes me anxious, I can feel myself start to wake up,or I'm aware that it's a dream (or both), and I fully wake up to my heart racing.
