897400 tn?1303329148 Hi, welcome to the forums, your symptoms are suggestive of rapid eye movement (REM) related parasomnias involve the intrusion of the features of REM sleep into wakefulness (eg, sleep paralysis). It is a type of sleep disorder. Few of the individuals are known to suffer from parasomnias esp. when they are on non-benzodiazepine sedatives, drug abuse, sexual abuse etc. otherwise no definitive cause exists in few individuals apart from stress, positive past history of abuse etc.
Avatar m tn The past few nights I have had extremely strange nightmares that seem to drag on for hours, and upon waking I hallucinate for roughly 30 seconds. This has never happened to me before and it's somewhat alarming. I have felt like I've been losing touch with reality these last few months, but this is new all together. What might be causing this problem? The hallucinations are mild but very vivid, as if they're completely real.
Avatar m tn Also, some places it has been linked to Sleep paralysis. (which mostly is waking up/falling asleep paralyses. ) - But ive read once that one of the side effects might be exactly this. and i do have sleep paralysis from time to time. Now, since im of course still scared ******** about the heart and all due to anxiety, im not gonna say "there is no need to see the doctor". I have no idea how your medical history looks like. So go see him if needed.
Avatar m tn ve been taking either Adderall or Provigil for over a year and have not had experiences like that while on these medications. I do experience sleep paralysis-like occurrences upon waking from a dream every so often, but not frequently, maybe once every few months.
Avatar n tn I get it upon sleep onset and waking. I also suffer from occasional night terrors and waking confusion. I used to think there was a super natural reason for both the sleep paralysis and seizures and am greatly relieved to find information detailing both as medical phenomenon. I also suffer from panic/anxiety disorders. I have also recently come to see my drug and alcohol (cigarettes and caffeine) abuse as a compulsive behavour, not dissimilar from washing hands many times daily.
Avatar f tn It happens to me a lot pregnant or not has my whole life. It can be scary sometimes it's happened to me Where that thing in the room tried to kill me.
438443 tn?1241995685 It usually occurs at the onset of sleep or upon waking. Although it can be scary you will not die from this. It would be beneficial to let your doctor know that this is happening in case of underlying issues.

Avatar f tn I actually get sleep paralysis as well... It won't harm your baby at all.
Avatar m tn It is normal to feel some sleep paralysis upon waking as the brain can become conscious before the body has fully awoken. It is not anything to be too concerned about. Most people will experience it within their lifetime but waking up with shooting pain and/or feeling like you are having a heart attack is not normal. You could have simple electrolyte imbalances. Low potassium can cause muscle spasms.
Avatar n tn The actual cause of sleep paralysis is not understood. But sleep paralysis can run in families and people who have narcolepsy. Sleep paralysis can be treated with clonazepam, Studies show that vitamin B12 improves sleep patterns but not enough evidence show prevention of sleep paralysis. Reducing stress and getting the proper amount of sleep may be beneficial. Learn to recognize your symptoms and the triggers of your sleep paralysis.
Avatar f tn I had occasional episodes of sleep paralysis when I became symptomatic with chiari. At first I didn't know what was happening but after some research I realized it was sleep paralysis upon awakening. These episodes would always happen when I woke with my neck in a strange position, usually turned to the side with my chin down. Now, I am 3 months post op and I fell asleep on the couch the other day with my neck in a bad position and it happened again.
7183425 tn?1388965323 Hello, Hallucinations occur in the state between waking and sleeping. You may be having hypnopompic hallucinations. Hypnopompia occurs upon waking, and may also be accompanied by sleep paralysis. It may be a direct result of alcohol or drug use, or could be due to insomnia, anxiety, stress or other factors. Try relaxation techniques before bedtime to help the mind shut down. You can also indulge in meditation and yoga.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is no practical way to decipher between normal REM sleep and sleep paralysis. This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert.

Avatar f tn Some of what you describe does sound like descriptions of sleep paralysis. An occasional episode shouldn't make you feel so tired every day no matter how much sleep you get. It may be that you have more than one thing going on. Life and it stresses can cause odd things but I wouldn't just write this off as stress. And certain illnesses can cause fatigue (hypothyroid, diabetes, anemia).
Avatar n tn For the past 3 months I have been going to sleep and waking about 5 hours later with lower back pain. It seems to subside after I get up and slowly walk around, however it is taking longer to disappear and I find myself having to sleep in an upright position and take pain relief. I have a high threshold to pain but it really is causing me a lot of discomfort. I have a vaginal fistula and experience lots of discharge from my vagina.
1745492 tn?1320198340 I have also experienced hallucinations and temporary paralysis upon waking up. The hallucinations are more common than the paralysis. I have both auditory and visual hallucinations. This symptoms are starting to affect my sleep worse than ever now, and they are affecting my other health conditions. We don't have the money right now for me to get a sleep study done. Does anyone have an opinion? Does this sound like narcolepsy, just not as severe?
Avatar n tn use of EOG traces shows that eye movement is still possible during such episodes. When there is an absence of narcolepsy, sleep paralysis is referred to as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP). The paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger. Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations.
Avatar f tn I get that sort of thing when I am really tired, and it seems to happen more often during naps, or in the morning when waking. All I can say is, try to get more sleep so you aren't exhausted and you might have them less. Also relax about it, and instead of trying to wake up try to go back to sleep. When I do that I find it easier to wake up. It's hard not to panic during it, but you are safe and it is okay.
436338 tn?1204359355 Considering you are remembering the events upon waking, you are most likely coming out of REM sleep. If you're unable to move and aware of it, it is likely an episode of SP. Sleep paralysis usuallly produces very vivid scenes that can be very life like. With me I get it in all kinds of stages. It seems to manifest itself into very lucid dreaming.
1196962 tn?1265111116 Hi, I have this also. There is a clinical name for it but I don't rememvber it! Alot of people actually experience this disorder. Some people feel like they are being held down with a weight on their chest, some people feel like evil spirts are after them. My experiences have been waking up with eyes open, mind totally alert but unable to move a single muscle for several minutes andr unable to scream, etc.
Avatar f tn I have sleep disorders. In the top 3 of symptoms "sleep paralysis" is one of them and you can experience it awake. You say you were not asleep but it can happen upon awakening or before falling asleep. I think this section gives some good examples of clues you may have sleep paralysis and/or some type of sleep disorder whether it's caused by Chiari or not: * Onset immediately upon awakening or just prior to falling asleep.
