sleep-paralysis

Avatar f tn Sleep paralysis (old hag syndrome) is well documented and is the prime suspect in the salem witch trials. The fear part of the brain is close to the sexual part which is (i believe) that many sleep paralysis are accompanied by very lucid sexual dreams (inncubus and succubus for the ignorant) i believe it is synapsis misfiring.
1995699 tn?1327155353 When you go to sleep, your brain paralyzes your body on purpose. To stop you from acting out your dreams, more or less. This is a raelly well known phenomenon, and has a really weird way of expressing itself.. ...You ever heard of the "hag" story? it was a way cultures understood this, back during the Stupid Age. The people who went through what you did would see a hag, or something similar, sitting on their chest.
Avatar f tn Another website also mentioned that sleep paralysis or old hag syndrome can be caused by stress, insomnia, and lack of exercise. So I try to avoid those as much as possible. I also remember fearing for my safety and sanity. I was on the verge of calling my health insurance agent if my situation was covered. I just felt really lost and scared, but I didn't call the agent. I was scared he might think I was going crazy. Anyway, I hope I helped somehow.
Avatar f tn Its hard to explain but here it is the best i can describe. In the mid of the night, I wake up to the feeling of vibrations/shaking of my body and the bed, my eyes have to be open becasue i can see but cant move them, ill have a major feeling of fear for a couple seconds, but cant move a bit....then it will go away and i feel exhausted, dizzy and just icky all around. and Im tingling a lil after it.
Avatar m tn That is until I started having my lucid dreams and doing more research in the sleep and dream field. Sleep paralysis is very very common during your teenage years and early 20s. If it continues after that then yes, you could have narcolepsy. However I do not believe it is anything evil.
Avatar f tn ve had in the past what you experienced, the hag or witch riding your back. I do believe had I not gotten past my fear, this same dream would have turned into a hag (dark, female presence outside my bedroom door).
Avatar f tn p. which had me questioning if I have this since I do not see an old hag or have the creature like intity sit on my chest/choaking.... I wish I could hear 'others' who are out there just like ME...who have sleep paraylsis but just not this form/type.
Avatar m tn When am able to just move my finger it breaks the paralsis , I go back to sleep. I get a a electric charge before I go to sleep this warns me that paralysis is coming.
Avatar m tn Had a sleep study done recently, will post results on own post rather than hijack yours. Did not get paralysis on the night of the study, annoyingly, but did on the night straight after. Missed such a valuable opportunity to see what the brain is doing during an episode. Shame. Will just churn out the theories, sorry to sound fed up, am, nothing to do with you. Idea that melatonin deficiency may be a factor....
Avatar m tn What you are experiencing could be hallucinations and delusions and they can occur with certain medications, stress, sleep deprivation, in certain brain disorders and with schizophrenia or bipolar disorders. When sleep paralysis happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. You will need to consult your primary care physician for assessment. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn hi im a 26 yr old female and have had a few episodes of sleep paralysis the last one was the worst. i was awake and could see the room fine and my boyfriend sleeping next to me but i couldnt move then it felt like i was being strangled i couldnt breath it felt as if someone had their hands around my throught i kept trying to move trying to scream anything to wake up my boyfriend to help me but all i could do was see him out of the cornor of my eye sleeping.
Avatar m tn some nights I'd wake up, and be completely paralysed, only able to move my eyes. I wouldnt be able to speak, or move any other part of me. I'd have a great sense of fear, and It'd take a few minutes to come out and back to normal, then I could completely move and everything would be fine again, I'd just be abit shocked as to what just happened, I started to get this more and more, to the point where it was 6-10 times a night..so I cut out ALL caffine.
Avatar n tn and if it can be proven scientifically that it affects someone at later stages of sleep, why would it affect you immediately you go back to sleep after the paralysis had initially hit you. 2. why do i only have to see demonic silhouettes and not heavenly?
Avatar f tn Ive been having these for years now and my doc says its hypogognic hallucinations, ive seen everything from old men wearing black screaming in my face to old hag type witch hangibg off the celing above me screaming stuff at me i dont understand, to staying at a friends after a night out pysically trying to climb out of the window beiving i was trapped on a alien space ship, yes crazy as it sounds these are very scary, when they first happened some years ago, it started off small hearing the old
Avatar f tn Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs either when falling asleep, or when awakening. When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.
Avatar f tn I am 25 years old, and I have been experiencing episodes of sleep paralysis. It feels like I am not breathing and I can't and is very scary! I am also concerned that maybe I have sleep apnea, though my husband says I do not snore, and if I do it is very quietly. I am afraid to go to sleep at night because I am afraid I will never wake up! I also deal with anxiety issues so I am not sure if it caused my that. Can you have sleep apnea without snoring? Is it dangerous?
Avatar f tn This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert. He is actually able to "smell" fluctuations in catecholamine (adrenaline and noradrenaline, aka.
Avatar m tn Hi, welcome to the forums, your symptoms are suggestive of rapid eye movement (REM) related parasomnias involve the intrusion of the features of REM sleep into wakefulness (eg, sleep paralysis). It is a type of sleep disorder. Few of the individuals are known to suffer from parasomnias esp. when they are on non-benzodiazepine sedaives, drug abuse, sexual abuse etc. otherwise no definitive cause exists in few individuals apart from stress, positive past history of abuse etc.
1544075 tn?1296026498 Maybe do a little reading about sleep paralysis and then consider having a sleep study done. Honestly, when I got of the benzodiazepines, the worst of it stopped.
Avatar n tn what makes sleep paralysis happen? what can i do to reduce the risk of suffering sleep paralysis? what medication is avalible for this disorder? how effective is it? how does it help? i would be very gratefull to hear off you.
Avatar f tn Hi all, The other night, I went though what I believe to have been a moment of sleep paralysis. It was in the morning when I had woken up too early and tried to get back to sleep for another hour or so. I can't really describe, but I felt like I had a concious control over my dream, like I was aware of what was going on during it. Well, it turned into a nightmare where I was drowning and the next thing I knew I felt as though I was paralyzed.
Avatar f tn Is there any possible explanation for INTENSE HEAD PRESSURE during SLEEP PARALYSIS? By the way, ALL of the test I mentioned earlier were completely NORMAL.
568812 tn?1379165794 All I knew is that it seemed so real and I would keep the lights on. I had the sleep paralysis also where I was trying to move but could not and trying to say, "Help" but the words would not come out. It was frightening. I would often recite the Lord's prayer. My daughter though has also had the paralysis in her sleep, so not sure if it is PSTD associated alone as she did not have the abusive childhood I did.
Avatar n tn Last night I experienced sleep paralysis for the first time and it was terrifying. I felt like I was being tortured and heard noises but I could not talk or even muffle any sounds. I was unable to sleep for awhile before this and only slept for two hours. Yesterday was also the three year anniversary of my mothers death who I was very close to so I am sure this was not a coincidence. Is this most likely an isolated incident by stress and the situation or should I be concerned?
Avatar m tn The symptoms you are experiencing could be due to an entity called sleep paralysis. When this happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior.
