Avatar n tn I actually posted this on another similar forum, but I was trying to find out more about it since the same thing was happening to me. Thought I'd share again... This started happening to me when I was in my late teens. It has happened to me from time to time ever since. I'm now in my late 30s.
Avatar n tn What happens in the sleep paralysis is that while arousal system has brought you out of the REM phase, your body still is paralysed. This is the short phase of time when one gets dreams of being paralysed. Some people see themselves lying on the railway track with the train approaching, but can't move a muscle. There are experiences of being paralyzed while one can see and hear the surrounding. This is definitely not something made up by your mind. It has a scientific basis to it.
Avatar n tn Do you know why you get sleep paralysis? Such as stress, random sleep eppisodes, naps during the day, etc etc. Also, do you get pain in the neck? Like a stricking pain going up your neck, it's a fast but very uncomfortable experience.
Avatar f tn ve experienced sleep paralysis many times ever since I started college but have never had any symptoms of further sleep problems or narcolepsy. It turns out, after doing pretty extensive research, that sleep paralysis can happen alone without being brought on by a sleep disorder. It can be brought on by stress, an off-balance sleep schedule or lack of sleep, and other things which can throw off your sleep cycle.
Avatar f tn This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert. He is actually able to "smell" fluctuations in catecholamine (adrenaline and noradrenaline, aka.
Avatar f tn Hey! You are NOT crazy! This is an actual condition and it doesn't mean you have anything psychologically wrong with you. I suffer from it too and when I first experienced, I was terrified b/c I felt certain that I had an encounter with some demonic presence. It is the most terrifying feeling in the world. I felt like it was on my chest, then took off running (I actually heard "footsteps") and I saw the dark shadow too.
510038 tn?1489983029 I have a friend who has sleep paralysis episodes and she says my experience sounds like sleep paralysis. After what felt like forever I snapped out of it and was able to breathe and I just went back to sleep. But I also am curious if anything like this could be related to Chiari - perhaps it was not sleep paralysis? I just know I was very confused and terrified and I hope it never happens again.
Avatar m tn The symptoms you are experiencing could be due to an entity called sleep paralysis. When this happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior.
1196962 tn?1265111116 But sleep researchers now know that, in most cases, sleep paralysis is simply a sign that your body is not moving smoothly through the stages of sleep. Rarely is sleep paralysis linked to deep underlying psychiatric problems. Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move. It occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During these transitions, you may be unable to move or speak for a few seconds up to a few minutes.
Avatar m tn One time that i went through this experience, i astral projected, or had an out of body experience. i arose out of my own physical body and floated in mid air, and then i saw this ungodly looking monster gazing up on me, walking towards me. i woke up out of fear. Again this was the one time when i actually astrally projected. Other times i go through sleep paralysis, i either hear voices, or sence this overwhelming cloud of darkness/negativity around me, or hovering above me.
Avatar f tn Okay I am going to do the best I can to explain what I experience while I'm asleep. I can be asleep and all of a sudden its like I wake up, I can't move any part of my body, I can't speak, at first I couldn't open my eyes, but now I can, but I can hear whatever is going on around me, whether it be the tv, or family talking, dogs barking, just everything. I read a post where someone refer's to this as a out of body experience, and he goes on to say he has done this and that.
Avatar m tn As far as the blood rush - eveyone has slightly different manifestations of sleep paralysis. If you experience fear during the event, your body is going to release adrenaline which raises the heart rate and gets the blood flowing through the body. Hence, the rushing feeling in the brain. Extreme fear can also produce the effect. Again, only a sleep study can show what is going on. Narcolepsy can also indicate sleep apnea and potentially cataplexy.
Avatar n tn use of EOG traces shows that eye movement is still possible during such episodes. When there is an absence of narcolepsy, sleep paralysis is referred to as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP). The paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger. Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations.
568812 tn?1379165794 But at some point I started looking up on the internet, found out about sleep paralysis and read up whatever articles I could find. The ones I found most reassuring where the articles that had a scientific/medical base and left out the supernatural element. Also I learned the parlysis part is natural when the body gets into REM mode. What isn't quite natural is that you are awake durring that REM stage. That's why you may get hallucinations in that time.
Avatar n tn The actual cause of sleep paralysis is not understood. But sleep paralysis can run in families and people who have narcolepsy. Sleep paralysis can be treated with clonazepam, Studies show that vitamin B12 improves sleep patterns but not enough evidence show prevention of sleep paralysis. Reducing stress and getting the proper amount of sleep may be beneficial. Learn to recognize your symptoms and the triggers of your sleep paralysis.
Avatar m tn Hi, suffered sleep paralysis for decades now. No voices etc, just paralysis. WHY doesn't the medical world take an interest in this phenomena, which is more common than I think is believed? It is left to the realm of cultural myths, alien abduction theories, generalized medical mumbling about anxiety - the definition of anything they do not understand or think will get them into trouble by not investigating.
Avatar m tn Thanks a ton..!! Just did a quick search on Sleep Paralysis.. My case is exactly the same. It IS Sleep Paralysis, I'm sure now. I have irregular sleeping habits, loads of stress, I sleep upright.. And the symptoms are just so very accurate. I wonder how I missed this so far. I was thinking its some kind of a heart disease or brain problem or something..

Avatar f tn In particular, anyone with too high pillow during sleep is bound to experience recurring sleep paralysis all night. This terrible reduced blood supply to the brain is more likely to occur during waking up during the day than during sleep at night. For example, almost everyone suddenly stands up when their blood pressure is low in summer, and has experienced the terrible symptoms of the reduced blood supply to the brain caused by orthostatic hypotension.
Avatar m tn s like that my body start to paralyse and i go in deep sleep and then it holds me tightly pushing me in crushing way my heart beat faster but because i am use to it i relax myself when it comes and i fight it back and trying to twist it break it, even if i wake up and sleep straight away it will come back like 9 times in one night I have to totaly get awake and change my sleeping position, look if u have it in bad way and u scare to get u worse ask for someone who have big knowledge in islam onl
Avatar f tn What you are experiencing is called sleep paralysis and hypnogogic hallucinations. Sleep paralysis happens when you start to wake out of a dream but your brain wakes up while your body is still paralyzed (during REM or dream sleep you are paralyzed so you wont hurt yourself acting out your dreams). The hypnogogic hallucinations are related. Do you have panic attacks or narcolepsy by any chance? My doctor told me both those problems make your specific sleep problems more likely.
Avatar f tn the strength of this command depends on how sure the body is that the mind are sleeping, this depends on how still you lie, if you lie very still the body is almost convinced that the mind is sleeping, and send out a very tiny signal which can easily be ignored by you and result in sleep paralysis with your mind awake, sleep paralysis feels almost like led on top of your body, and can easily be mistaken for someone pushing you against the bed. VERY SCAERY AND UNCOMFTABLE.!!!
