Avatar f tn Sleep paralysis (old hag syndrome) is well documented and is the prime suspect in the salem witch trials. The fear part of the brain is close to the sexual part which is (i believe) that many sleep paralysis are accompanied by very lucid sexual dreams (inncubus and succubus for the ignorant) i believe it is synapsis misfiring.
1995699 tn?1327155353 When you go to sleep, your brain paralyzes your body on purpose. To stop you from acting out your dreams, more or less. This is a raelly well known phenomenon, and has a really weird way of expressing itself.. ...You ever heard of the "hag" story? it was a way cultures understood this, back during the Stupid Age. The people who went through what you did would see a hag, or something similar, sitting on their chest.
1196962 tn?1265111116 I am 20 years old and about six months ago I began to experience what many call "sleep paralysis." Sometimes I will have one episode, others numerous times a night, however this does not happen every night. It occurs every couple of monthes. Also I get it as I am falling asleep and as I am awakeing. I feel as if I can't move, and as if my organs are shutting down. I try to scream for help or move to snap out of it but it does not work instantly.
Avatar f tn My personal experience is that I was having apnea events during REM when I had sleep paralysis. I have only experienced it once or twice since starting apnea therapy (CPAP) and have been able to correlate it with the data from my machine that, yup, I was having an apnea when it happened. Have you had a sleep study done? Do you have symptoms of apnea? It's worth checking out. I'm glad I did. I feel SO much better now.
Avatar m tn That is until I started having my lucid dreams and doing more research in the sleep and dream field. Sleep paralysis is very very common during your teenage years and early 20s. If it continues after that then yes, you could have narcolepsy. However I do not believe it is anything evil.
Avatar f tn Another website also mentioned that sleep paralysis or old hag syndrome can be caused by stress, insomnia, and lack of exercise. So I try to avoid those as much as possible. I also remember fearing for my safety and sanity. I was on the verge of calling my health insurance agent if my situation was covered. I just felt really lost and scared, but I didn't call the agent. I was scared he might think I was going crazy. Anyway, I hope I helped somehow.
Avatar f tn I have had these experiences many times. It's sleep paralysis. Our religious beliefs cause us to fear it. But our spiritual connection should reassure us that God did not give us a spirit of fear! I experienced this during my first trimester when all I could do was sleep! It was around 10am and I remember waking up and knowing someone was in the hallway at my bedroom door. I couldn't move.
Avatar f tn Since becoming pregnant I have been having really bad night terrors and sleep paralysis along with it. I have always had nightmares since I was little but.none like these. Lately they have become so intense that my husband wakes up and has to wake me up because I am screaming in my sleep. Is there anything I can do to stop them? Has it happened to any of yu?
Avatar n tn Do you know why you get sleep paralysis? Such as stress, random sleep eppisodes, naps during the day, etc etc. Also, do you get pain in the neck? Like a stricking pain going up your neck, it's a fast but very uncomfortable experience.
Avatar f tn This can be reset by bright light therapy, sleeping pills and sometimes by sleep debt. In sleep debt, though you happen to sleep late, you condition yourself to get up early; this in turn will help you to sleep early. So, try this, but if your symptoms still persist, I would advise you to discuss your symptoms with your primary care physician who may then refer you to a sleep specialist for further evaluation. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I experienced sleep paralysis for the first time last night. It was absolutely terrifying. I couldn't wake up no matter how hard i tried and when I was about to wake up I would be dragged right back into the horrible dream I was having Is anyone else experiencing sleep paralysis for the first time while pregnant.
Avatar f tn Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs either when falling asleep, or when awakening. When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.
Avatar f tn I actually get sleep paralysis as well... It won't harm your baby at all.
Avatar n tn Last night I experienced sleep paralysis for the first time and it was terrifying. I felt like I was being tortured and heard noises but I could not talk or even muffle any sounds. I was unable to sleep for awhile before this and only slept for two hours. Yesterday was also the three year anniversary of my mothers death who I was very close to so I am sure this was not a coincidence. Is this most likely an isolated incident by stress and the situation or should I be concerned?
Avatar m tn Hi, suffered sleep paralysis for decades now. No voices etc, just paralysis. WHY doesn't the medical world take an interest in this phenomena, which is more common than I think is believed? It is left to the realm of cultural myths, alien abduction theories, generalized medical mumbling about anxiety - the definition of anything they do not understand or think will get them into trouble by not investigating.
Avatar m tn What you are experiencing could be hallucinations and delusions and they can occur with certain medications, stress, sleep deprivation, in certain brain disorders and with schizophrenia or bipolar disorders. When sleep paralysis happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. You will need to consult your primary care physician for assessment. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

568812 tn?1379165794 All I knew is that it seemed so real and I would keep the lights on. I had the sleep paralysis also where I was trying to move but could not and trying to say, "Help" but the words would not come out. It was frightening. I would often recite the Lord's prayer. My daughter though has also had the paralysis in her sleep, so not sure if it is PSTD associated alone as she did not have the abusive childhood I did.
Avatar n tn The associated symptoms with the following disorder are confusional wakefulness, sleep paralysis, nightmares and night terrors. This can occur in any sleep stage (REM and non-REM stage) . Do not panic when you have the attack. To rule out parasomnias you need to undergo Polysomnyography and sleep analysis. she needs to take out time for further evaluation. Sleep with light on. Short term benzodiazepine against prescription will help. I suggest you to consult sleep specialist.
Avatar f tn My issues have waxed and waned over the years although I am happy to report no more sleep paralysis.. Sleep paralysis is associated with narcolepsy to some degree. I feel it can often be brought about by stress/panic. Try sleeping on your stomach instead, this may resolve your sleep paralysis completely. Personally, I didn't like the things I saw or felt, so I would wake myself up as fast as possible... God bless.

Avatar m tn They've really started to disrupt my sleep Last night was another such night. Up almost all night, even though I was exhausted. Just as I'm drifting off to sleep, I get the sensation of my heart stopping, which jolts(hits) me awake. Sometimes it makes me literally jump up in bed... Any advice?
Avatar n tn Sleep paralysis occurs when you may go to sleep or may tend to wake up from sleep. It is a temporary phenomenon where you are incapable of moving your body or even part of it physically but keep trying to shout loudly or seek someone’s help. It may be lasting for a few seconds to minutes. It can repeat once again if you sleep and there is no physical injury to body, but you will be probably frightened with sweating and increased heart beat with shortness of breath.
Avatar f tn n the past, I have had many different episodes of sleep paralysis, so I am fully aware of what happens during most episodes. However, a couple of nights ago, I went to bed late and after about an hour and a half of sleeping, I had sleep paralysis but with a very scary symptom. When I found myself in that "in between" being awake and asleep condition, as usual, I couldn't move or speak.
Avatar f tn Almost every night their entire body becomes paralyzed and stays that way most of the night. I think it has to do with low potassium levels. I think the symptoms vary for everyone and also depends on how low the levels are. From what I was told, my uncle could only absorb very little, if any potassium. I hope this helps! Good luck with everything. Keep us posted!!
