Hypnopompia occurs upon waking, and may also be accompanied by sleep paralysis. It may be a direct result of alcohol or drug use, or could be due to insomnia, anxiety, stress or other factors. Try relaxation techniques before bedtime to help the mind shut down. You can also indulge in meditation and yoga. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
It seems you are under stress due to sleep deprivation for long time and frequently suffering with probable sleep terror and sleep paralysis episodes with associated anxiety and night cramps. Stress due to hard and havoc day at college/work, going to bed late night, excessive caffeine, alcohol and smoking can be the cause. Stress either physical or mental does trigger them. Just relax and do morning-evening walk, stretches, have nutritious diet with lot of water.
One of the causes of sleep paralysis is stress, others include irregular sleep schedules, sleep deprivation, and sudden environmental changes. I would suggest you to do not stay awake past your bedtime, make sure you get sufficient physical exercise during the day. Also please schedule an appointment with a sleep specialist as soon as possible.
I suffer from ANXIETY. The past 2 nights in a row I have had these terrible dreams I would hope to say they are... Last night was the worst one. I fell asleep on my own with out my sleeping medication around 2am, I remember "it had to be a dream" but I was in my room laying down, the room looked the exact same way it was when I woke up... I was dreaming I was hearing voices outside my house and sirens and cars going by, and I couldn't wake up...
What is sleep paralysis? Sleep paralysis consists of a period of inability to perform voluntary movements either at sleep onset (called hypnogogic or predormital form) or upon awakening (called hypnopompic or postdormtal form). Sleep paralysis may also be referred to as isolated sleep paralysis, familial sleep paralysis, hynogogic or hypnopompic paralysis, predormital or postdormital paralysis What are the symptoms?
I've been having these re occuring dreams of when i was a child. But lately i've been hearing voices and sometimes seeing people at night when i get up in the middle of the night. What do you think this means?? Does this mean I'm going insane or do I simply call my health care doctor?? Or does this mean that my brain is triggering something??

HI,I SMOKED SOME WEED WITH FRIENDS,I AM NOT A SMOKER NORMALLY AND I SMOKED BECAUSE IT WAS MY BDAY AND THEY WHERE SMOKING IT AND DRINKING AT THE SAME TIME,WHEN I WAS IN BED I HAD TERRIBLE HALLUCINATIONS I WAS SEEING PICTURES AND HEARING VOICES AND SOUNDS, I KEPT GETTING UP AND MY HEAD WAS REALLY SPINING,I COULDN'T FALL ASLEEP.SO I SAID TO MY FRIENDS AM NEVER SMOKING THAT THING AGAIN.
I've had that exact same problem for almost 40 years! The first time was when I was 19, napping, and woke up unable to move, feeling like someone or something was pressing me into the bed, like a heavy weight on my chest. I kept trying to scream, but only a tiny squeak would come out; finally, the episode ended when my leg kicked out and knocked the cat off the bed, and I could move again. I was convinced it was a ghost, if you can imagine that!
I am 15 and I have trouble sleeping. I had my first sleep paralysis dream a couple months ago (It runs in my family), and since then I have been experiencing unusual things. Ever since I was a kid I have had, I guess what you would call panic attacks, but never as severe as the one I had a week ago. It was the most horrible thing I have ever experienced.
for me, i started experiencing psychotic symptoms (hearing voices, having paranoid delusions) only after i severed all social ties and locked myself in my room, only using the internet to communicate. this was about 2 and a half years ago i was 24. now im on drugs and the symptons are somewhat gone, and i can function pretty normally, although i am compromised in some ways. In your case i hope its not anything schizo, see a doctor as soon as possible, your story sounds familiar.
I didn't know ANYTHING about it at the time, but I would get stuck in between sleep and awake. Being in that state is very scary.. cause you don't know its sleep paralysis - your hearing voices, you cant open your eyes and you FEEL like your having seizures or getting electrocuted 'inside your head'. Very scary. This would happen anytime I tried to sleep - whether a nap on the bus, or at night before bed. It went on for a while and got so bad I stopped sleeping because I was scared.
I have migraines, spinal headaches, seizures, issues with temporary memory loss i do things like turn the water on and forget that i did it,confusion i forget what i was doing in the middle of doing it like i forget to close the washer lid i have forgotten to feed my kids dinner and almost send them to bed hungry until they remind me,visual black outs that cause hearing loss when it happens along with bad vision i cant see to drive at night and everything starting to have that fuzzy look to it.

In addition to the sleepiness of REM sleep, narcolepsy is characterized by episodes of sleep paralysis in which the person awakens from sleep unable to move. Sleep paralysis lasts a few minutes and resolves spontaneously. Rarely, this occurs in normal individuals.
There are realistic dreams when one is falling asleep. There is sleep paralysis. A good sleep doc could sort thru your description and narrow it down. Are you on any meds that could cause this? I know someone who sees figures as you describe and said she keeps a flashlight handy and once she flashes the light on the figure it disappears. Hers are medication induced. But if you can't move, you couldn't use the flashlight. The sleep boards are full of descriptions such as yours.
I learned about something called Sleep Paralysis last semester in Psychology. Its pretty rare but sounds somewhat similar. Sleep Paralysis can happen when one wakes up and the brain is still in dream mode. This causes the person to not be able to move or speak for a few seconds all the while seeing things or hearing things. VERY frightening to the person experiencing it because they believe it is real. http://serendip.brynmawr.
ive seen many doctors , had every test you can think of preformed ,done more then one sleep study . and the diagnoses is all over the place ive heard diet , mild narcolepsy ,sleep paralysis , and my favorite that im stressed . non of which i feel is correct im not excessively tired , i eat healthy , and dont consider my self suffering for any extra stress .
Even that is too much, so I take 900 mgs 3 times a day with the 4th dose reduced to 600 mgs. If I took the entire 3600 mgs, I'd be hearing voices in my head, talking out loud and twitching as if I was about to have a seizure. When a person has these kinds of side affects... call the physician AFTER you call the pharmacist and report it. Understand the drug and go about making it work. It's a seizure medication... and what is a flash of pain down your spine, or leg, or arm?

The big negative to this medicine is the after taste it leaves in your mouth the next morning. But she takes it when she needs a good night's sleep. I hope you get a good night's sleep soon...
Hi, my partner has been having terrible trouble falling asleep, he complains of feeling a huge surge of adrenaline just as he is about to drift to sleep, this can continue for quite a while until he is so exhausted his body has no choice but to sleep.(this feeling is not associated with any physical twitching or jerking of muscles or limbs) He has fairly recently stopped taking citalopram which was prescribed to alleviate anxiety which he was diagnosed with many years ago.
aggressive in some way without hearing any actual words or voices. Lasting for a minute or so only and then coming back to ordinary time. Sometimes a change in spacial perception also and the feeling that the room is out of perspective or something. I hope you all realise that it's nothing to be scared of and for anyone that reads these comments, to know that you are never alone...
