Avatar n tn use of EOG traces shows that eye movement is still possible during such episodes. When there is an absence of narcolepsy, sleep paralysis is referred to as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP). The paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger. Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations.
Avatar n tn I am a 20F, I am currently taking adderol 20mg when I need to study, and Xanax to help me with panic attack, as well as Suboxone. I have been suffering with hypnopompic Sleep Paralysis- I wake up, usually from a day-time nap, unable to move or talk. I always brushed it off as a dream until it lasted for about an hour, I fell on the floor and was found there. During this time of Paralysis i got overheated, excessive sweating, and couldnt stop biting my tongue.
Avatar m tn Hi, suffered sleep paralysis for decades now. No voices etc, just paralysis. WHY doesn't the medical world take an interest in this phenomena, which is more common than I think is believed? It is left to the realm of cultural myths, alien abduction theories, generalized medical mumbling about anxiety - the definition of anything they do not understand or think will get them into trouble by not investigating.

488264 tn?1226520307 I'm not a medical professional but I've had the exact same symptoms for nearly 20 years. I don't hallucinate either. It is a terrifying experience to be paralyzed and to not be able to breathe. I had a sleep study done nearly a year ago and was diagnosed with central and obstructive sleep apnea. Since I started on my CPAP I haven't had one incidence of sleep paralysis. I don't know if apnea and sleep paralysis is linked. But I do know that I am much better.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is no practical way to decipher between normal REM sleep and sleep paralysis. This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert.
Avatar m tn t hear, weakness, fatigue, nausea and headache. Less common symptoms include syncope, dyspnea, chest pain, and neck and shoulder pain. When symptoms occur they can vary greatly in expression from one individual to another.[2] Hypotension, anemia, improper sleeping position or poor blood flow in the neck caused by too high pillow are several common causes of the reduced blood supply to the brain during sleep at night.
Avatar m tn The symptoms you are experiencing could be due to an entity called sleep paralysis. When this happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior.
Avatar m tn i was able to come out of it and then tried to go back to sleep and it happened again for another few seconds and i as able to come out of it but it was hard. this happened another time, maybe 6 monthes ago and i do not want this to worsen. i also recently changed my bedroom around and i think this might have caused it, and i was also facing my tv which was on while it happened, i think that may have been the cause. if you have any techniques of stopping this please met me know!
Avatar n tn Since I have been symptomatic with autonomic problems, I have gradually been getting more and more sleepy. I have sleep paralysis every time I fall asleep. Just the other day I was in starbucks drinking coffee and I started to fall asleep. I fell into sleep paralysis right there in the store and I couldn't move! I have talked to my internist, and she has referred to a neurologist who is a sleep medicine specialist. My appointment is next week.
12594947 tn?1426138835 I have narcolepsy with cataplexy, which causes a wide range of symptoms from excessive daytime sleepiness to frequent night awakenings and night time insomnia to episodes of paralysis (status cataplecticus in my case). The best treatment protocol I've been on has been either Ambien or Trazadone plus Imipramine (a tricyclic used to treat cataplexy) in the evening, and Provigil (Modafinil) in the morning; I've also been on benzos, but for another rare disease I have, not my sleep issues.
Avatar f tn I have no idea what sleep paralysis is, so I can't comment on that one, but everything else you're describing can be caused by anxiety. Hyperventilating is a common symptom of an anxiety attack. The rest can be caused by long-term anxiety and stress. They can also, however, be caused by other things, but you say doctors have eliminated physiological causes and you also say you suffer from stress and anxiety, so there you go. Are you in therapy or doing anything else about this?
Avatar f tn Hey! You are NOT crazy! This is an actual condition and it doesn't mean you have anything psychologically wrong with you. I suffer from it too and when I first experienced, I was terrified b/c I felt certain that I had an encounter with some demonic presence. It is the most terrifying feeling in the world. I felt like it was on my chest, then took off running (I actually heard "footsteps") and I saw the dark shadow too.
Avatar m tn Went to the doctor. She says my stomach is inflamed. Sometimes when your stomach is sore you feel it in your back. It explains why the pain was there and gone there and gone, it was the grinding motion of my stomach. And why I felt nauseous with lots of watery saliva and an acidy oesophagus. The sleep paralysis/apnea and palpitations are either from stress or it's hereditary. Something i'll need to ask my family about. Cheers for the advise.
Avatar n tn Inadequate sleep can also cause tiredness, fatigue and dizziness. Other causes for these symptoms are inner ear infections; brain disorders heart problems, fever, stress, low blood pressure and anxiety. Please consult your GP who will examine you and may ask for blood tests for evaluating blood sugar and CBC. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar m tn As robere pointed out it can be Hypnagogic hallucinations which is a component of narcolepsy and also can be associate with Sleep paralysis and Cataplexy (emotionally triggered muscle paralysis resulting in partial or complete collapse). Even certain drugs acting on CNS can cause such visual hallucination. Other CNS causes should be ruled out.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am not diagnosed, just went to the doctor today and and told her my symptoms and had a lot of blood drawn. Anyway, I have had something similar in the last four weeks. It happened last on Sunday. I was just laying down on my side, resting, when suddenly it felt like someone was squeezing me around my middle. All of my muscles tensed and I couldn't move. I'm not sure exactly how long it lasted. Maybe a couple of minutes. My muscles were sore afterward.

1745492 tn?1320198340 As in I can take an short nap, say an hour, and still dream. I do not sleep well at night and have very interrupted sleep. I have to sleep for 10-12 hours to feel even close to rested. Even then, I still have to take an afternoon nap. I have fallen asleep randomly during the day although it doesn't happen fairly often. Also, when I get too excited, work out too much, get angry, or overwhelmed, my legs feel very weak and can buckle under me.
Avatar m tn Your symptoms could be due to sleep paralysis. Disorders related to dreaming could occur with REM sleep behavior disorders. Here the person acts out the dreams. Your symptoms of seeing things could also be due to sleep disorders “Nightmare” or "Night terror" disorders . Here the person experiences symptoms of bad, frightening dreams which interfere with his sleep schedules.
Avatar f tn There are several possible explanations for your symptoms. In general, if you are awake and aware of the symptoms that are occurring, and there is no convulsive activity (shaking) occuring of a limb, a seizure is less likely, though still a possibility. Some forms of nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy can be simple arousals from sleep.
Avatar f tn I am 25 years old, and I have been experiencing episodes of sleep paralysis. It feels like I am not breathing and I can't and is very scary! I am also concerned that maybe I have sleep apnea, though my husband says I do not snore, and if I do it is very quietly. I am afraid to go to sleep at night because I am afraid I will never wake up! I also deal with anxiety issues so I am not sure if it caused my that. Can you have sleep apnea without snoring? Is it dangerous?
