Also, alcohol has no therapeutic use in sleep medicine. In fact, sleep specialists recommend that people wish sleep disorders minimize their alcohol intake, and never drink before bedtime as that can cause a disordered type of sleep (even if it subjectively seems like it's "helping" you sleep).
Avatar n tn Do you know why you get sleep paralysis? Such as stress, random sleep eppisodes, naps during the day, etc etc. Also, do you get pain in the neck? Like a stricking pain going up your neck, it's a fast but very uncomfortable experience.
Avatar n tn But it can be idiopathic hypersomnia where there is excessive daytime sleepiness without cataplexy or sleep paralysis. Usually one will not be in deep sleep. The causes for such hypersomnia remain unknown but environmental, psychological factors may play role. Such prolonged sleepiness can cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. The causes which need to be ruled out are viral infection, substance abuse, alcohol etc.
Avatar n tn Sleep paralysis occurs when you may go to sleep or may tend to wake up from sleep. It is a temporary phenomenon where you are incapable of moving your body or even part of it physically but keep trying to shout loudly or seek someone’s help. It may be lasting for a few seconds to minutes. It can repeat once again if you sleep and there is no physical injury to body, but you will be probably frightened with sweating and increased heart beat with shortness of breath.
Avatar f tn This is what we call sleep paralysis when your consciousness is stuck somewhere between sleep and awareness. Your muscles are totally inactive and you usually experience a fear that a dark shadow presence is in your room. It is not dangerous in anyway. To my opinion it could be caused by stress or depression, abnormal sleeping patterns, vitamin deficiencies or hormonal abnormalities in the brain. However the causes are not well understood because sleep is a very complicated issue.
Avatar n tn what makes sleep paralysis happen? what can i do to reduce the risk of suffering sleep paralysis? what medication is avalible for this disorder? how effective is it? how does it help? i would be very gratefull to hear off you.
Avatar n tn use of EOG traces shows that eye movement is still possible during such episodes. When there is an absence of narcolepsy, sleep paralysis is referred to as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP). The paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger. Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations.
Avatar n tn The symptoms you describe could be caused by many things. Sometimes, a person with sleep paralysis will wake up while in REM sleep and find themselves paralyzed by the hormone that the body secrets to keep us paralyzed so that we don't physically act out our dreams. This paralysis can cause hallucinations. Other explanations are hormonal problems, vitamin deficiencies, drug interactions, neurological issues, psychological phenomena, etc.
503651 tn?1223174601 Hello does anyone know how to snap out of sleep paralysis? I am having it weekly now and sometimes it gets very. scary. I always know that i am having a sleep paralysis episode but i never realize that the hallucinations are not real. If any one has had this or has any idea on how to snap out of it please let me know. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs either when falling asleep, or when awakening. When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is no practical way to decipher between normal REM sleep and sleep paralysis. This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert.
Avatar f tn As for your state of horror and not being able to move, this is called sleep paralysis. Various factors increase the likelihood of sleep paralysis including sleeping in a face upwards or supine position, increased stress, sudden environmental/lifestyle changes, a lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode, excessive consumption of alcohol coupled with lack of adequate sleep.
Avatar n tn also, i been getting an increase of sleep paralysis when my headache symtoms started, lastweek i got about more than 8 in 1 night. i usually never get sleep paralysis.
Avatar n tn Hi, there are many causes of numbness such as local compression over nerves esp. during abnormal sleep postures, diabetes, electrolyte abnormalities, deficiency of vitamin B1, B6, B12 esp secondary to chronic alcohol intake, hypocalcaemia etc. Even hypothyroidism too can present with numbness of extremities. As Strokes are concerned the symptoms depends upon the type of stroke and size of the embolus or thrombosis.
Avatar f tn As I understand you experience episodes of sleep paralysis. When this happens in sleep the person has difficulty moving his hands or feet. This is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior.
436338 tn?1204359355 Considering you are remembering the events upon waking, you are most likely coming out of REM sleep. If you're unable to move and aware of it, it is likely an episode of SP. Sleep paralysis usuallly produces very vivid scenes that can be very life like. With me I get it in all kinds of stages. It seems to manifest itself into very lucid dreaming.
Avatar n tn Medications such as Sodium oxybate (Xyrem) may be prescribed as a cure for sleep paralysis in severe cases, but the best treatment for sleep paralysis is to reduce stress and get the proper amount of sleep" - http://www.medopedia.com/sleep-disorders/sleep-paralysis-treatment. Avatar m tn During sleep a phase comes called as Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep. During this phase the sleep is deepest. During this sleep the muscles go in a paralysis like state and the person sleeping appears to be ‘dead to the world’. If there is a disorder off this phase of sleep, then muscle paralysis like state does not happen and the person ends up flailing, grabbing, jumping, falling out of bed, kicking, talking trashing etc.
10548816 tn?1410965176 I have had sleep paralysis every so often prior to being pregnant and just had it the first time in my pregnancy the other day. It seems to happen when I have been eating more sugars and not sleeping well. I've become pretty good at calming myself down and focusing on my breathing to bring me out of it.
Avatar m tn The symptoms you are experiencing could be due to an entity called sleep paralysis.
Avatar n tn I am a 20F, I am currently taking adderol 20mg when I need to study, and Xanax to help me with panic attack, as well as Suboxone. I have been suffering with hypnopompic Sleep Paralysis- I wake up, usually from a day-time nap, unable to move or talk. I always brushed it off as a dream until it lasted for about an hour, I fell on the floor and was found there. During this time of Paralysis i got overheated, excessive sweating, and couldnt stop biting my tongue.
