Avatar n tn Sleep paralysis is the symptom of a sleep disorder called Narcolepsy. This sleep disorder is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. It is usually diagnosed by sleep onset REM sleep (SOREMs), which is dream sleep in multiple episodes of MSLT (multiple sleep latency tests).

Avatar f tn I wake up cranky, down right foul moods, I don't like to be startled in any way. I also have a sleep disorder - I don't go into full body paralysis like you are supposed to so I have had boughts of sleep walking, I have even bitten a partner when I have been dead alseep My pdoc said it's quite commonn to wake up like this - only thing I can suggest is set ground rules.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately, there is no practical way to decipher between normal REM sleep and sleep paralysis. This is because in normal REM sleep you experience the same paralysis as in sleep paralysis; the only difference is your level of consciousness at the time. So there's no way to develop a sensor that an app could use to address this issue. This also may be of interest to you: I have a service dog whose primary task is medical alert.

2143567 tn?1342539031 Hey Dr. Anitha. After looking up "night terror" disorder, I came across something on Sleep paralysis found on this website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis and it sounds an awful lot like what I have. In addition, the paralysis may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (hypnopompic or hypnagogic) and an acute sense of danger.[9] Sleep paralysis is particularly frightening to the individual because of the vividness of such hallucinations.
Avatar f tn which I still believe is an option because of sleep issues since I was 12 including the nightmares and sleep paralysis, but my sleep study say I am extrmely tired but REM is normal. I am bipolar and take Lithium 450 two times a day since I was 22 and with in normal limits. I now take Paxil 40 mg which reduces these episodes to almost 0 if I take it regularly and on time.
Avatar f tn The frontal lobe is a common lesions location and can be associated with things like migraines, hypertension, thyroid conditions, head bumps or trauma, some psychiatric disorders eg major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder etc but keep in mind that having some tiny lesions is not necessarily something that's abnormal or to do with diseases, so whilst it may seem significant or possibly a bad thing, it's usually not..... Hope that helps......
488264 tn?1226520307 Information on sleep paralysis can be found on slep disorder websites such as talk about sleep. I have Narcolepsy and SP is a common factor that I deal with. Sleep Paralysis happens when the brain is kinda disconnected in the order of sleep. Our brain is awake but it puts our body in dream sleep and paralyzes us- once the brain copes with the dysfunction and recconects the proper wires the SP dissapates.

Avatar f tn My issues have waxed and waned over the years although I am happy to report no more sleep paralysis.. Sleep paralysis is associated with narcolepsy to some degree. I feel it can often be brought about by stress/panic. Try sleeping on your stomach instead, this may resolve your sleep paralysis completely. Personally, I didn't like the things I saw or felt, so I would wake myself up as fast as possible... God bless.
1196962 tn?1265111116 The associated symptoms with the following disorder are confusional wakefulness, sleep paralysis, nightmares and night terrors. This can occur in any sleep stage (REM and non-REM stage). To rule out parasomnias you need to undergo Polysomnyography and sleep analysis. You need to take out time for further evaluation. Sleep with light on. Short term benzodiazepine against prescription will help you. I suggest you to consult physician or sleep specialist. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn Hi, suffered sleep paralysis for decades now. No voices etc, just paralysis. WHY doesn't the medical world take an interest in this phenomena, which is more common than I think is believed? It is left to the realm of cultural myths, alien abduction theories, generalized medical mumbling about anxiety - the definition of anything they do not understand or think will get them into trouble by not investigating.

Avatar n tn This has happened to me a couple of times in my life and it was completely terrifying! I guess it could be written off as dreaming, but it sure didn't feel like it at the time. About 20 yrs ago I woke up only to realize that I was dreaming, but would swear I was awake and this scenerio played itself out 4 times before I REALLY woke up and by the time I did, I was afraid to move for fear I was still dreaming. This was the scariest thing to ever happen to me.
Avatar m tn Sleep is a key factor to watch in learning to manage your bipolar disorder. I find when I'm headed towards depression, I sleep a lot, but when I'm headed towards mania, I sleep less and less until sometimes I reach no sleep for days. However, if you're sleeping a lot and you're not depressed and don't notice any other symptoms typical for when you swing into your depressive periods, you might bring it up to a doctor because it could be symptomatic of other things.
Avatar f tn just a shrill, scary sound. On one occasion she described to me experiencing sleep paralysis upon waking. She has always been extremely private and is surprisingly opening up to me about this, but refuses to see a professional. What can I do? Thanks for any help!
Avatar f tn t sleep. Some nights I will sleep for maybe 4 hours but I will not fall asleep till at least 3am if not later. Other nights I'm up for easily 24-48 hours straight. During this time I have constant adrenaline running through me, so much so that it eventually starts to make me feel sick. My stomach is turning because I'm so hyped up for no reason and it doesn't ease throughout the night, if anything it gets worst.

2010625 tn?1329372056 In the course in miracles it actually teaches that we are living in an illusion. Sleep paralysis is considered a sleep disorder, but some belive the spirit can leave the body during sleep. If it were posible to regain consciousness before the spirit rentered the body it could posibly cause a paralisis. It just seems very odd to me. Maybe I am just so troubled by this because I believe I have experianced both.

Avatar f tn Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to REM atonia, the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Sleep paralysis occurs either when falling asleep, or when awakening. When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis.
