Common Questions and Answers about Sleep apnea rem

Avatar m tn As rightly mentioned the patients with sleep apnea have frequent awakenings in the night due to blockade of windpipe and lack of oxygen, they are often tired and spend less time in REM sleep. REM sleep is that part of sleep cycle where dreams occur.
254714 tn?1316613355 0% and stage 4 sleep at 0.0% there was 3 rem sleep periods rem sleep was normal at 16.5% the rem latency was at 123.5 min.. the overall apnea hypopnea index was mild at 6.2 events/hr. the remspecific index was 1.3 events/hr the supine index was 7.8 events/hr there was 28 obstructive hypopneas with a mean duration of 14.8 seconds mean saturation was 98.2 with a nadir saturation in non- rem sleep of 98.0% and in rem sleep of 96.0% 100.
Avatar m tn I just had a sleep study and got the same results.. NO REM! I'm so confused because I can't find ANYTHING about this on the internet. I've been on over 20 different sleep aids throughout my life with no luck. I have trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep, and apparently I don't get into REM. I had sleep apnea as a baby-2years old. Other than that, I've never been able to sleep well. HELP!
Avatar f tn i have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.....overall,mild obstructive apnea, becoming severe in rem sleep with mild oxygen desaturation.I used a nose prong (resimed) for three weeks no problems at all, then developed dermatitus in and below my nose, sore and unsightly.I tried a mouth splint ,with lots of adjustments, had facial and ear pain.My doctor advised perservering with c-pap,but also adding the apnea was not bad....total rdi=12.1/hr.I am going on a cruise next week, and I am worried.
4686261 tn?1358135192 It took me 20 minutes to get to sleep, woke up twice to use bathroom, slept a total of 363 minutes, 47 min (13%) in stage 1, 72% (261 min) in stage 2, and 14% (51 min) in stage 3. Only 3.6 minutes in REM sleep, and REM latency was 375 minutes. My dr didn't read the report except where it ruled out what he was concerned with -- apnea & PLMD. I have fibromyalgia, and some sort of autoimmune or neuromuscular something...
Avatar n tn Just recently I have been given a sleep study and I had very little REM and many sleep apnea episodes, My Pulmonologist has ordered another sleep study using C-pap. I am hoping that my side effcts are actually symptoms of sleep apnea.
Avatar n tn are not sleep experts, they are sleep apnea experts who can do little more than diagnose sleep apnea and prescribe cpap machines. That was the results of my sleep study. "No sleep apnea, but you keep waking up so here have a cpap machine and have a happy life". But doctor, why do I keep waking up all night long? "I don't know, just use the cpap machine and have a happy life".
Avatar n tn The formal way of diagnosing narcolepsy is to undergo a multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) which is a daytime study after an overnight sleep study. If you're REM sleep deprived in general, you'll have what's called REM rebound, where you go into REM much quicker than normal. You may want to mention your symptoms the next time you meet with your sleep doctor.
Avatar f tn The reason for the constant 4AM wake up time is because of your sleep cycles. You go through 4-5 cycles of sleep, from light to deep to REM sleep. During REM sleep, your muscles (including your throat muscles) relax completely and the longer you stay in this stage, the more likely you'll stop breathing and wake up. You don't have to wake up gasping or choking. You probably don't like to sleep on your back, right?
Avatar f tn How can I help heal my chronic pain issues if I do not have stage 4 sleep and very little REM sleep? 3. Is there anything I can do to increase stage 4 and REM sleep? 4. Could the cortisol level be a culprit in all of this? Thank you in advance for the multiplicity in questions. I am not sure where the next steps were.
Avatar f tn Researchers evaluated 98 pacemaker patients for sleep apnea. Fifty-nine percent of the patients had undiagnosed sleep apnea and they suffer from sleep disorders. But there is no good research done for sleep apnea in pacemakers users. Also sleep apnea can also be associated with restless leg syndrome, Obesity and upper airway soft tissue abnormalities etc.
Avatar dr m tn I recently had a sleep study and my results are REDUCED REM AND DELTA SLEEP and ALPHA WAVE INTRUSION into delta sleep. My understanding, I have 'awake' alpha waves firing during delta (deep) sleep resulting in non restorative sleep. As well, it took me 4.5 hours to ever get to REM sleep, then it was reduced. I am diagnosed with Mutiple Sclerosis, Complex Partial Seizures, Pernicous Anemia, IBS, Severe Migraines, Scolosis, and multiple herniated discs.
Avatar f tn I told him I have sleep apnea, some days worse then others. I just did the sleep test last weekend and it came back negative. She told me to be considered to have sleep apnea you have to stop breathing 15+ times an hour. I asked to be tested, and am glad I did. I ended up having to take the test twice, the first night I could feel my self waking up and not breathing, but a cord came unplugged so I had to do it again and slept fine the next night.
Avatar n tn Get a sleep test performed, to check for Sleep Apnea and to make certain that you are netering into REM and Deep Sleep properly. Don't ecpext the Pulmanologist to say anything. Get a copy of the test results and go through it yourself. You should hit REM about 30% of the night that rests your brain, I can't remember the percentage, but you need a large amount of Deep Sleep to rest your body.
Avatar f tn - eye movements are crucial for determining the stage of sleep known as Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep. REM sleep is the stage in which most dreaming takes place.
Avatar n tn All the symptoms you describe and the high red blood cell count could be attributed to obstructive sleep apnea. I would question the validity of a sleep study that only lasted 3 hours, with you fighting “to stay asleep." You should definitely give the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device a fair trial. You also need to have further discussions with the sleep specialist, about his/her impressions of your symptoms.
Avatar f tn Well, hold off on the expensive scans and heart tests until you get the second sleep experiment with a positive airway pressure mask. You see, the connection between "psychosis" and sleep apnea is probably from the lack of sleep that sleep apnea causes. When you don't get enough solid sleep, you can have all sorts of oddball mental impressions of things that seem out of place.
612551 tn?1450022175 During sleep, the body cycles between non-REM and REM sleep. Typically, people begin the sleep cycle with a period of non-REM sleep followed by a very short period of REM sleep. Dreams generally occur in the REM stage of sleep. A lot of studies are going on to study the importance of REM sleep, which is the dream phase of sleep. Psychologists generally agree that achieving the dream state of sleep is a critical element for maintaining good mental health.
Avatar f tn About the sleep apnea - unless you had substantial good sleep in all stages and some time in REM while supine, a sleep study negative for obstructive sleep apnea may not be conclusive. Look at your copy of the report and see what it says about arousals, especially any associated with limb movements. Maybe you didn't sleep enough to exhibit the apneas on this particular night.
Avatar f tn I recently had a sleep study done and it showed no apnea, no REM and on average waking up 18 times an hour. I was but on Nuvigil 150mg and have been taking for 4 days but I don't want to take it anymore for several reasons. One it only lasts about 6 hrs and then I hit a wall. The second reason is I just feel creepy inside and my hrt rate on average is up 15-20 bpm. I just called the Doc to tell them about it and they are supposed to call back.
3052618 tn?1344105035 I had a sleep study last night, to rule out sleep apnea. I don't have the full report yet (He said my doctor should get it Wednesday). He did however tell me a few of the things he saw on it.. but he didn't explain them. He said that he saw intrusions in my brain waves or something. And that parts of my brain were active that weren't supposed to be (I'm guessing while asleep, surely not while I'm awake as well).
Avatar n tn My husband was recently diagnosed with Sleep Apnea at a sleep clinic. He has suffered from severe, almost debilitating fatigue for many years, never knowing why. He does not snore. It turns out there is a non-snoring type of Sleep Apnea, and not one doctor (of many, MANY!) ever suggested this as a cause for the fatigue and exhaustion. Now he is using a CPAP machine, and adjusting quite well!

Avatar m tn I have undergone a sleep study, that's my only qualification to comment, that and a long life's experience... and old guy. I read you do not suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea.. look right and while I don't recall the % time in REM needed to be rested in the morning, you must have been given the number. In my case I was told I was marginally well rested relative to test results, but do suffer from mild sleep apnea.
Avatar n tn The sleep study persons or neuroligists cannot explain it other than over 1,000 brain lesions. P.S. I have been blessed to foster many cats in my life. Love your name.
