Common Questions and Answers about Sleep apnea in dogs

sleep

Avatar f tn 5 for a Dx of OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). I would think that the mean heart rate of 91 which is high for sleep is due to so little sleep being accomplished. Central apenas occur when the brain "forgets" to tell the lungs to breathe or when CPAP pressure is too high. An overnight oximetry at home w/your current CPAP and settings are indicated and can be scripted by your doctor. The recommendation is that the at-home overnight oximetry be done w/02 supplementation to your CPAP.
Avatar n tn Waking up frequently may also be a sign of sleep apnea, though one does not have to do this in order to have it. A reason you may be waking up could be because your brain is realizing that you are not getting enough oxygen, and this causes you to wake up. Your heart rate being up could also be due to lack of oxygen. Best thing to do would probably be to see a doctor, get tested for sleep apnea to see if that is it, or rule that out.
Avatar n tn For years I have experienced tachycardia in sleep which wakes me (unless I take a beta blocker). Have seen 2 cardiologists and ECG, continuous monitoring, echo, stress tests, etc. are all normal. Have been told I do not need the beta blocker but when I stop, symptoms recur. Should I see a sleep specialist?
Avatar f tn Snoring does often accompany sleep apnea, but just because you snore does not mean you have sleep apnea and vice versa. Minor sleep apnea is responsive to self-help remedies such as losing weight, eliminating the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives; sleeping on your side, and regularizing your sleep hours. It would be best to see a sleep specialist for proper management and to ease your worries. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar m tn i was diagnosed with sleep apnea after sleep studies was done and i do not snore at all but i do snort from it
Avatar n tn I am trying to find a link to med given to me by the military that may have caused sleep apnea. a friend said he read that some of the shots given to us before we went to the persian gulf could cause sleep apnea.
Avatar f tn I know because I have mild sleep apnea and would occasionally wake up out of a sound sleep because I had stopped breathing. Sleep apnea is nothing to mess with, but is also easily treated. I highly encourage you to have a sleep study done to help you get to the bottom of what's going on. In the meantime, try not to sleep on your back. I wish you all the best!
Avatar f tn Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum, This does sound like it could be sleep apnea and some resolve post op from decompression surgery but in the meantime ur Dr should be made aware and u should be tested for oxygenation of ur blood and for sleep apnea...this can be done right in ur home thru a company called NovaSom....ask ur PCP about it and see if u can get the testing, and all testing should be covered by INS.
1615999 tn?1307461942 s sleep was much like you describe, but it was back before sleep apnea was even on the radar. Sometimes longstanding sleep apnea can cause changes to the heart that might be evident on autopsy, but is not always the case. Sleep apnea does increase risk of a cardiac event or a stroke when the oxygen levels drop in the blood due to lack of air intake for which the heart tries to compensate. Big stress on the body.
Avatar f tn i have been diagnosed with sleep apnea.....overall,mild obstructive apnea, becoming severe in rem sleep with mild oxygen desaturation.I used a nose prong (resimed) for three weeks no problems at all, then developed dermatitus in and below my nose, sore and unsightly.I tried a mouth splint ,with lots of adjustments, had facial and ear pain.My doctor advised perservering with c-pap,but also adding the apnea was not bad....total rdi=12.1/hr.I am going on a cruise next week, and I am worried.
1571776 tn?1296348020 So much so that I tell my husband to check on me during the night to make sure I am still breathing and to make sure I wake up easy. I can no longer sleep in our bed because I can't seem to get comfortable. I sleep on our couch b/c I can get more comfortable and I am always tossing and turning or having to get up to go to the bathroom. I try and let my husband get his rest as he is the only one working right now and he works 11 hr. days. Plz help me and let me know what you all think.
Avatar f tn You need to find out if you have sleep apnea or not. Its important. If you have sleep apnea, you literally stop breathing in your sleep. There is a high risk you will not start breathing again on your own. Do a sleep study at home and if you do have it, its important you let yourself get use to wearing the mask. It took me approx a month. Get on this issue. Its worth it!!
1384923 tn?1308410640 Hi, I havent had surgery for chiari but I was dx with sleep apnea 2yrs ago and was prescribed a c-pap machine. My cardiologist told me that sleep apnea may contribute to my heart beating faster during the day. I would also wake up gasping for air..it was horrible. Once I felt like was was gona faint and never wake up, very scary. Later on i found out that it is one of the many symptoms of chiari.
Avatar n tn , but he has not used the machine in months. Is this really good, safe intelligent treatment for sleep apnea?
Avatar m tn I have sleep apnea. I wear a full mask. Is it normal to wake up several nights (3 or 4) with the mask on? I thought the CPAP was supposed to make me sleep better not waking up a lot of times. I'm not sure what is going on because I woke up one night with the mask on and was choking and gasping for air than I had a seizure.
1622896 tn?1562364967 If you have obstructive sleep apnea and it is effectively treated (like with CPAP), a sleeping medication shouldn't matter. I'm guessing you were on the med at the time of your titration study, so that influence would have been factored in to the pressure you were prescribed. When you hear warnings about taking sleep meds with obstructive sleep apnea, that's mainly if your apnea is untreated. If you have central sleep apnea, then that's a different story.
Avatar n tn Im new to this and am asking if Im doing something wrong here. I am use the Autopap unit for Sleep Apnea that I have been diagnosed to suffer from. Been using it near 6 to 7 weeks now. I have a nose cup on my face at night. But at times I feel a need to cough at 1st. Like something is tickling the back of my oesophagus. Feels like a hair but I can't spit it out and it's always their when I put the mask back on. Then when I wake my lungs hurt like Im getting an infection in them.
5159375 tn?1368562728 So last night I finally got to get some shut eye around 4. But I kept waking up because I couldn't breathe. I'm sure this is sleep apnea because my brother and my mom have the same issue sleeping. It was so bad I felt myself stop breathing several times and woke gasping for air :( I just want a good nights sleep!!!
Avatar n tn I am constantly tired during the day.I will usually fall asleep on the lounge in the afternoon, I will usually sleep for about 15 mins, and sometimes up to 1 hr( I usually feel refreshed after the 15 min power nap). Recently I have started gasping for air during the day and sometimes even snorting as if I need to take a very quick breath.Could this all be due to sleep apnea?
1769279 tn?1315015320 I also have CM and sleep apnea. I love my CPAP machine. It has made a huge difference in my sleep. You should definitely have a sleep study. I also read that CM people are at risk for lots of sleep disorders. As a matter of fact, in addition to sleep apnea I have something called Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD). It is similar to RLS.
