Common Questions and Answers about Sleep apnea fibromyalgia

Avatar m tn You can have a polysomnogram or sleep test done to detect Obstructive Sleep Apnea, as this is independent of the problems you now have. But the chronic pain from fibromyalgia and herniated discs can also cause insomnia or sleeplessness. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
529159 tn?1224991026 Yes, I have sleep apnea and fibromyalgia along with Type II Diabetes. I wear the C-Pap nightly. In fact, it has become like a security blanket in that I have to have it to even take a nap. My fatigue has not improved. My sleep patterns are so mixed up. I have restless leg syndrome and now my arms have the tingling as well. I have had TMJ surgery x 2 and the C-Pap has not caused any further problems. I also sleep with a mouth splint.
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with central sleep apnea. I am also experiencing forgetfulness, clumsiness, severe nerve pain at different places throughout my body, loss of ability to concentrate and multitask, and I have a high ANA titer. I am currently taking Plaquenil and am being fitted for Bipap. I have a hx of schwanoma of the lumbar spine with resection some 10 yrs ago. I also have developed fibromyalgia.
Avatar n tn Do you know why you cannot get used to the CPAP. There are many different treatments for sleep apnea. I suggest you check out sleep apnea support sites for more info. - www.apneasupport.org and www.cpaptalk.com Since you are not overweight you may be a good candidate for sleep apnea surgery but don't do the UPPP.
675329 tn?1297288378 I think that anyone with fibromyalgia should be screen for obstructive sleep apnea. If you have underlying obstructive sleep apnea, then taking any medication that relaxes your muscles can aggravate the breathing pauses. I would consider undergoing a sleep study.
Avatar f tn It's not the usual for a new bipap (or cpap/apap/vpap) user to be immediately comfortable and able to keep the mask on 7 hours a night, but it is possible to achieve this goal. I thought I'd never be able to do it, and now I'm perfectly comfortable. If the mask you have doesn't work for you, talk to your supplier and tell them. Don't suffer in silence or give up. Without knowing the full results of your sleep study, I'm not sure what very light sleep apnea means.
Avatar f tn Hi, welcome to the forum, first thing to rule out is hypersomnia. It may present as excessive daytime sleepiness or nocturnal sleep of long duration (as much as 12 h or more) or sleep drunkenness. Your symptoms are due to Shift work. The sleep problems can be resolved by transferring from the night shift or by adopting a daily sleep routine that is consistent seven days per week. Chronic insomnia may develop in individuals who work the night shift on either a rotating or permanent basis.
Avatar n tn I woke up this morning with a killer headache and shortness of breath. It lasted for about and hour. Even though I slept for 8 hours I woke up exhausted and shakey! I could bearly move. I have done a sleep study that showed only mild apnea so don't think it is that. It has happened before. I have a cold so wonder if it is related. Anybody else with this?
4686261 tn?1358135192 apnea and dreaming. The dreaming may be more a psychiatrist issue than a neurologist one in my case. I didn't have trouble with either until a good bit older than you are, so my problems may be part of the price of living a long time... a goal we all have instinctively.
Avatar m tn Many Type II Diabetics have undiagnosed sleep apnea. When the sleep apnea is diagnosed and treated effectively (often with a CPAP machine to force air into the lungs while sleeping so that breathing is not interrupted), the patient's glucose levels will improve considerably. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea six years ago but was not keeping the CPAP mask on all night as it felt a little claustrophobic. I began to feel a little nauseous whenever I ate sweets, though I never ate them much.
398920 tn?1218779347 How many hours you used to sleep early and what was your routine. You might be probably having excessive sleep due to sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea could be a reason for you to wake up number of times at night, many times you may not even be aware of it ending up having excessive daytime sleep because of fatigue, feeling unrefreshed, daytime sleep attacks at your workplace. Added to this, stress can be a trigger. Modafinil can be used for the treatment of narcolepsy.
Avatar m tn The majority of CFS patients are having sleep issues, including sleep apnea. I've listed information on this in our health pages under "Diagnostic & Blood Tests to Help Diagnose CFS". Here is the link: http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Fibromyalgia/Diagnostic--Blood-Tests-to-Help-Diagnose-CFS/show/376?
Avatar m tn Again, only a sleep study can show what is going on. Narcolepsy can also indicate sleep apnea and potentially cataplexy. I waited 18 years before talking to a doctor about my paralysis and one month later, I learned I have sleep apnea. Who know what 18 years of severe sleep apnea did to my heart, brain and organs. It would be worth your time to speak with an MD. The longer that apnea goes untreated, the more damage occurs to the body. Best of luck!
Avatar m tn There are other sleep disorders besides sleep apnea. But sleep apnea is not seen only in the older overweight population. Throat or jaw structure is sometimes the culprit and seen in the young and slender. Hope you find the answers you seek.
Avatar f tn The causes can be genetic, brain damage or medical disorders such as clinical depression, uremia and fibromyalgia. Sometimes hypersomnia may be due to other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. Your symptoms may be linked to depression. You should consult a psychologist for a complete medical and psychological workup. Do keep us posted about your progress.
Avatar f tn There is a correlation to degrees of sleep apnea and heart problems. I recently went through sleep testing (positive for severe sleep apnea with low oxygen) and I really had no typical signs of sleep issues except for awakening at night with increased heart rate. The study was able to confirm the low oxygen at the time of the increased heart rate. Joan.
Avatar f tn Snoring does often accompany sleep apnea, but just because you snore does not mean you have sleep apnea and vice versa. Minor sleep apnea is responsive to self-help remedies such as losing weight, eliminating the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives; sleeping on your side, and regularizing your sleep hours. It would be best to see a sleep specialist for proper management and to ease your worries. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar n tn I'm not sure about the seeing things, but your heart rate being up could be linked to why you feel scared. And it could possibly be sleep apnea. Waking up frequently may also be a sign of sleep apnea, though one does not have to do this in order to have it. A reason you may be waking up could be because your brain is realizing that you are not getting enough oxygen, and this causes you to wake up. Your heart rate being up could also be due to lack of oxygen.
Avatar f tn 31 years old, 310 lbs, current known conditions are sleep apnea (uses a CPAP which works well) and GERD (on Nexium which eliminates the symptoms), carpal tunnel His carpal tunnel started getting very bad on one wrist, then his elbow, about 6 - 8 months ago. He bought a new ergonomic keyboard and chair for his office which helped a lot. But the bouts of pain continued, then becoming more generalized to his neck, shoulders, back, legs, etc.

Avatar f tn Extreme fatigue could be due to anemia, diabetes, hypothyroidism, or due to kidney or liver problems. Another possibility is sleep disturbances (like sleep apnea, imbalance of rapid eye and non rapid eye movement sleep etc.). You may sleep your customary 7-8 hours and yet feel fatigued. You need sleep studies to rule this out. Other possibilities are chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, low Vit b12, low iron, low calcium, sodium and potassium.
