Common Questions and Answers about Sleep apnea edema

Avatar f tn I saw a pulmonologist last week who swears the root cause is sleep apnea and wants to do a sleep apnea take home test. It sounds kind of off to me because I do rarely snore, I don’t have times in the night when I stop breathing or gasp for air during sleep. I sometimes I do have daytime sleepiness and falling asleep. I don’t understand how any of this could be related to the awful edema I’m now experiencing.
Avatar f tn A cursory check of the extant literature on CPAP, obstructive sleep apnea, and edema (swelling) led me to a small clinical study where they found that CPAP actually reduced edema in most of the patients. This led the authors of the study to conclude that edema may be caused by OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) itself, rather than by CPAP usage. If you would like to see the study for yourself, you can find the journal article here: http://www.sleep-journal.

Avatar f tn I mention these because I see sleep apnea listed as a complaint and in that sleep apnea is very common with obesity and obesity does by itself cause/contribute to all your other complaints.
483733 tn?1326798446 People with sleep disorders, especially sleep apnea, can experience edema when their sleep is not restorative enough for the kidneys to perform their overnight functions. That came to mind also because you mentioned trying to lose weight. Excess weight can be both caused by and a cause of sleep apnea. People with sleep disorders tend to experience increased levels of pain too. Good luck at finding answers.
Avatar n tn Another very common cause for LE swelling is obstructive sleep apnea which occurs in obese patients and is typically diagnosed with a sleep study. Patients with this condition are typically very tired even after a long night sleep, they are frequently sleepy, fall asleep at work or while driving, complain of fatigue and headaches.
Avatar f tn Thanks for responding. Yes I had sleep study done and I had mild Sleep Apnea. However the machine is not helping me at all.
Avatar n tn You might have sleep apnea which could produce your symptoms. Also you should have a check to make sure you do not have protein in your urine.
454966 tn?1225158761 What concerns me is that you are waking up gasping for breath and feel like you are drowning. This is a classic sign of sleep apnea syndrome. If this has been happening for more than a few days, it's time to see your doctor and talk to him about your sleep problems. Hopefully, he'll request an overnight sleep study to determine if you have a sleep disorder. Do you feel tired during the day? Are you depressed at all? If so, the odds of having a sleep disorder is really high.
Avatar n tn The edema may be due to your weight and you may have sleep apnea which may also contribute. A regular exercise program can help where you walk at least two miles daily. Also you should not sit with your legs dependent as this can increase the edema. I would not recommend a diuretic as this might make the palpitations worse if your potassium got too low. Also a good diet low in sodium will help.
Avatar f tn Thanks Sunny602 My echo does show that three valves are not working properly. I also have MVP but I've had this all my life. I also have sleep apnea on top of it all. I'm so tired and every time I lie down I become short of breath and my heart races.
323615 tn?1226193396 Today the nurse examined her and learned that she is having some apnea. Her appetite is decreasing. Does anyone have any information on apnea as it relates to congestive heart failure. I am thinking that Mother's condition is worsening.
Avatar m tn She is giving all reason for obs sleep apnea for all problems, not ready to treat at all. she was explaining that there may be some tiny stuff around Pituitary, not willing to go for dynamic MRI or any other treatment plan? reasons for her may be not expert for this.
Avatar n tn Have people told you that you snore a lot in sleep ? Sleep apnea involves a reduced oxygen supply to the lungs due to periods of apnea (breathing stopped for about 10 seconds). Your next step should be to consult a sleep specialist and to do a sleep study if needed.
Avatar f tn Snoring does often accompany sleep apnea, but just because you snore does not mean you have sleep apnea and vice versa. Minor sleep apnea is responsive to self-help remedies such as losing weight, eliminating the use of alcohol, tobacco, and sedatives; sleeping on your side, and regularizing your sleep hours. It would be best to see a sleep specialist for proper management and to ease your worries. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar m tn only risk factor is an obesity and sleep apnea which is covered with TAP 3 dental appliance and now also S9 autoCPap.
Avatar n tn I'm not sure about the seeing things, but your heart rate being up could be linked to why you feel scared. And it could possibly be sleep apnea. Waking up frequently may also be a sign of sleep apnea, though one does not have to do this in order to have it. A reason you may be waking up could be because your brain is realizing that you are not getting enough oxygen, and this causes you to wake up. Your heart rate being up could also be due to lack of oxygen.
Avatar m tn You may have a condition such as obstructive sleep apnea or congestive heart failure. Obstructive sleep apnea can occur in several settings, but most commonly in individuals who are overweight. Lying at an incline can unload the lungs from the weight of the chest wall and abdomen. In congestive heart failure, the pressure differences created by gravity when these patients lie flat on their back often leads to back up of fluid into the lungs and a subsequent feeling of breathlessness.
Avatar m tn Has your wife been tested for lyme disease???lot of info. on internet. enter lyme disease in topic space.also, lyme forum at this website. at least rule it out..
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with sleep apnea 6 years ago and had my last sleep study in October. They tell me this is not sleep apnea. I have a new CPAP which I had checked to make sure it was operating correctly. Prior to the first of the year, my CPAP seemed to be controlling all symptoms I thought attributable to sleep apnea. I had no fatigue, headaches, etc. Most of my symptoms have developed since around Christmas.
Avatar n tn I am trying to find a link to med given to me by the military that may have caused sleep apnea. a friend said he read that some of the shots given to us before we went to the persian gulf could cause sleep apnea.
