529224 tn?1400648219 ve been on these medications since the start of 2007 with no side effects which blood tests have continually confirmed. Familial hypercholesterolemia affects 1 in 500 people in many countries, so it isn't that uncommon.
Avatar n tn For example, hypercholesterolemia. I have familial hypercholesterolemia and it takes 40mg of Lipitor to reduce my LDL to the national average. On top of this I have to take Ezetimibe which inhibits fat absorption through the gut (10mg). My cholesterol is now in the targets recommended for CAD patients.
Avatar m tn no study for its activity on hbv, we do know it has activity but the trial has never started simvastatin lowers hcc 50% and prevents fibrosis/cirrhosis so it is indicated on all hbver, this has thousands of pateints studied for decades to find this data on hcc you better use simvastatin instead other statins, also ezetimibe has in vitro effect on hbv so these are the best choices on hbvers
Avatar n tn I recently went online and looked at my medical records that are available through my health insurance company. I noticed that in 2005 and 2007 I had been diagnosed with Pure Hypercholesterolemia. This concerns me because my doctor has never mentioned this to me or put me on any statin medications. I'm 38 years old and have been on High Blood Medication since I was about 27. My normal BP without meds is about 140/90 with it I'm 120/77.
Avatar m tn curious if stef2011 or studyforhope or StephenCastlecrag know whether simvastatin by itself can reduce viral load? I've read about the effects in conjunction with NUCS but I'm curious if sim is effective alone.
Avatar n tn With your extremely high LDL level even with diet and strong family history, I would consider the diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia, which is a genetic condition of high LDL, found to be caused by defects in the LDL receptor. I would definitely have your first degree relative checked for high LDL as well, including your children as fatty plaques in patients with very high LDL levels can start even in the early teens.
976897 tn?1379167602 I'm taking my 16 year old son to the Doctor in the morning, to have a set of fasting blood tests. I want to make sure he doesn't have familial hypercholesterolemia like me. Does anyone know the minimum age you can take statins if he does have my particular problem?
Avatar n tn Hello. Without a clear history of familial hypercholesterolemia and cardiovascular disease at early age (stroke or heart attacks) in 1st degree relatives, indication of cholesterol testing is not usually recommended. The interventions are more oriented to risk factors modification like decreasing weight; aerobic exercise; decreasing foods w/ high content of cholesterol and carbohydrates; and increasing fish, nuts, olive oil, cereal, vegetables and fruits intake.
Avatar m tn Only around 20% of the fat in your blood comes from food, the Liver can make fat by itself and does. Without statins my total cholesterol is 375-400. With 40mg of Atorvastatin accompanied by Ezetimibe, It is 160-162. It has to be said though, more and more research is revealing that fats have little to do with it. I don't think it will be much longer before they finally find the culprit.
Avatar m tn It is very necessary to test for cholesterol in every 6 months. It is very necessary to ask if it is a familial hypercholesterolemia. If it is familial, then it is difficult to reduce it. The doctor prescribed me with atovastatin and ursodecolic acid. I am on with the medicine, but the doctor tells me to combine it with exercise. I would suggest you the same.
Avatar f tn Yes your Doctor should put you on Statins to reduce your Cholesterol. With Hypercholesterolemia, It is unlikely you will get them down sufficiently through diet alone. I was diagnosed with Familial hyper***** and 40mg of statins a day has done amazing wonders.
Avatar n tn There is a combination drug Simvastatin and ezetimibe that may be better in controlling cholesterol. Discuss these drugs with your doctor. Best of luck to you. Stay positive.

Avatar n tn High cholesterol runs in my family so even with diet and exercise my numbers are still a little high. I started getting heart palpitations a few years ago and after a lot of testing was told they were harmless PVC's/PAC's. Well, I stoped taking my Tricor and Zocor for a few months and my heart palps were gone. The problem is that my cholesterol numbers went back up. I started back on the statins and low and behold the palps returned.
1310757 tn?1273645428 Different doctors have just commented on how high it was without telling me answers and I never questioned. With Gemfibrozil it is hovering in the high 200's.
Avatar f tn If you make the proper lifestyle changes that include the proper diet and getting exercise, you can get off them for a while and them get retested in 6 months or so and see if you have lowered your number without meds and are stable. I know many people that have done that, but unfortunately for many it is easier to just take the pill which will lower their cholesterol without the work. Remember, do not start any new exercise routine without getting your doctor's approval.
Avatar m tn I m at present on Erythromycin for sore throat and as it interact with simvastatin the dr has asked to stop taking it until I complete the course of antibiotic.
Avatar f tn s usually 120/80-130/90. I also have familial hypercholesterolemia which I take injections for but my BP is still a little high. Could this just be allergies, a neurological problem, or cholesterol related? It also feels like I have fluid behind my left ear. Almost always when I hear birds chirping or crickets I have loud sometimes painful but not always, blown rattling speaker sounds only with those noises. Can you give me ideas what this could be?
