428155 tn?1203688894 Take the simvastatin, but watch the side effects over the next months. They can be of various natures, and not always obvious (like my fibrillation). itdood, you wrote "no side effects. Tho at times I thought my muscles were getting sore." - The heart is a muscle. Avatar m tn i m on simvastatin 40mg 1 every evening. i have noticed memory loss, i keep forgetting little things like where i kept my shoes or medicines and choice of correct words while speaking, also when i m driving i lose direction sometimes to my home. i m also suffering from bi lateral TN, high bp and enlarged prostrate and multiple gall bladder polyps. i m on carbamezapine 200mg & neurontin 300mg twice a day of each.
Avatar f tn The main study for Simvastatin was the 4S trial which proved that the incidence rate for side effects at 40 mg of Simvastatin was 1 in 2,220 prescriptions. What is interesting is that the incidence rate in the placebo group was 1 in 2,223. Also muscle pain is a very common complaint and is a symptom of many conditions. Ed is correct about the half life, a normal 40 mg dose is out of your system within a day. Also, any side effects are usually gone in a couple days or a week at most.
Avatar m tn I would recommend asking your Dr or pharmacist if these are possible side effects. There could be another reason why you're gaining weight and your BP is up. You should'nt have any side effects from stopping this med but, your Dr put you on it for a reason. I take it you had high cholesterol numbers? See your Dr before you quit taking it. That's just my suggestion.
Avatar f tn The risk of any side effect is anywhere between 2% and 5% which classifies this as very safe. Common side effects are muscle pain and sore joints. I would take it and just keep an eye out for anything that may be a side effect. This link will tell you what to look for; http://www.emedicinehealth.com/drug-simvastatin/article_em.
Avatar n tn was on lipitor for 5 months and switched two weeks ago to simvastatin in hopes of less side effects. just got some blood work done and the liver enzymes are elevated about one and a half times normal. does anyone know if its normal to see a spike in liver enzymes after switching statins or does this mean my body is rejecting the new statin?
Avatar f tn Typically Simvastatin is prescribed at 40mg but can be prescribed as high as 80mg daily but that will increase the risk of side effects. I would communicate new side effects with your doctor but try to push past the first few weeks, side effects should go away but be careful to report new issues.
Avatar m tn I have not been able to tolerate any of the statin drugs due to the severe gastric distress they cause. This, in turn, will result in palpitations for me. I have lowered my cholesterol with plant sterols, exercise and diet.
Avatar f tn He did weight 285 but is down to 224 because of a thyroid problem. Due to the weight loss his cholestoral is less than 100. Could he quit taking the cholestoral medicine? His medical doctor says he hates to take him off of it because of the previous heart problems.
Avatar f tn After recovering from Stage 4 Kidney Failure, after 4 years off Simvastatin, which caused it, my doctor recommended an MRI with and without contrast. I objected to the contrast dye because I knew about the risk of NSF (Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis). He assured me that my kidneys would flush it out of my system in 24 - 36 hours. 4 days later I awoke with both hands clenched tight and opening them was painful.

Avatar n tn She is also taking Simvastatin and an anti-depressant, Citalopram, and an amphetamine for ADHD. Is hair loss a normal side effect of these meds, and, if so, what can be done to combat the problem?
Avatar n tn I used both, and found that side effects are similar; tiredness, weight gain, and a slow pulse. Side effects are more pronounced as the dosage is increased. I had dosages from 25mg to 200mg. daily. Other reported effects are loss of libido, tightness in the chest, itching, irregular breathing, and irregular heartbeat. If you have any further questions, I'd be happy to respond based on my experience with the drug.
Avatar n tn Actually, Lipitor is much stronger than Simvastatin and has a much higher incidence of side effects, unless I have missed some new data. According to the links I have Simvastatin is the safest statin on the market.
Avatar f tn I take Simvastatin with no side effects, and have for several years, and so does my husband, also no problems. It's done an excellent job of lowering both our cholesterols.
1549189 tn?1293935668 I would research other methods of weight loss as opposed to going into drugs, where the side effects will eventually wear off anyway. Best wishes.
2035835 tn?1336300786 Mine did, and now I can only feel it a tiny bit if my feet are in the same position for a long time (i.e. computer chair rail). It definitely has a side effect of weight loss. In fact, some doctors prescribe it specifically for that reason. (In people who are overweight, and don't suffer from migraine.) I lost weight almost immediately.
Avatar f tn The study found that the patients on simvastatin achieved the target LDL level of less than 130, more than those on pravastatin (65 percent on simvastatin versus 35 percent on pravastatin). The most common side effects of the statins in general are nausea, gas, and upset stomach. Less common are headache, dizziness, rash, sleep disturbances, muscle pain, cramps, or weakness.

Avatar n tn Have you read the information leaflet that came with your simvastatin with regard to any side effects? The symptoms that you are experiencing may be due to a side effect from the simvastatin. Simvastatin does not suit everyone. Make sure that you drink plenty of fluids.

1515000 tn?1294933998 Hi gloriousgigi. Oh, this makes me so mad! This idea that if you loss weight all your problems will go away! I wish. I also have IIH,PTC.I was diagnosed two years ago, have a VP shunt, was never overweight, and still have all the problems associated with our illness. While I do believe that weight loss is a good thing for your general health, there is no evidence to support the claim of losing weight will "definitely" cure you.
Avatar n tn Hi, Simvastatin is generally well-tolerated and side effects are rare. Minor side effects include constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, heartburn, and headache. Major side effects include abdominal pain or cramps, blurred vision, dizziness, easy bruising or bleeding, itching, muscle pain or cramps, rash, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. ref:http://www.medicinenet.com/simvastatin/article.htm This could be an allergic reaction to the drug. It will stop if the drug is withdrawn.
Avatar m tn I am a 62 year-old male who has been taking simvastatin for about 30 years. All of my cholesterol-related numbers are in a healthy range, and I have never experienced any serious side effects (e.g., muscle weakness, kidney and liver impairment, etc.). I have, however, had trouble sleeping for the past several years (perhaps caused by simvastatin, perhaps not). More importantly, I have been experiencing back pain for the past few months and would like to try CBD.
