Simvastatin generic for zocor

Common Questions and Answers about Simvastatin generic for zocor

zocor

Avatar m tn I am wondering if anyone has taken simvastatin, the generic brand for Zocor. I just started taking this on Friday and twice since then I seem to have had some strange side effects. It has caused an upset stomach and then made me feel very jittery. It was almost as if I had the chills and then both nights had a horrible time sleeping. The only similar item I ate or drank was Diet Cranberry Soda. I am not sure if this would have had an impact. Any insight would be great.
Avatar n tn There are all kinds of statins out there, as ed said, you have to find out which one you tolerate. I have been on them for many years as I was unable to lower my LDL with diet and exercise alone. They have worked well and I have had no side effects, but everyone is different. Most of these can be replaced by the generic Simvastatin. It's cheap and is the basis of many of the meds out there.
Avatar f tn Vytorin does a remarkable job of reducing your Cholesterol, much better than Zocor (Simvastatin) alone. However, Zetia doesn't seem to add anything to the picture as far as preventing heart disease is concened. But read this about Zocor: -"Zocor Users Not Warned of Risks: The FDA's June 2011 safety alert is the most serious of many warnings regarding Zocor and associated risks of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis. Zocor manufacturer Merck & Co.
Avatar f tn I hear this quite often. Next tie you speak to your doctor ask about Zocor. There is a generic called simvastatin and it is very cheap yet very effective. Also, the additional med that your doctor was talking about is most likely a fenofibrate like Tricor which is commonly added to a statin med. I am on both and they have worked very well for me with no side effects.
Avatar m tn Your doctor should perform routine blood tests to check these enzymes before you start treatment with ZOCOR and periodically thereafter (for example, semiannually) for your first year of treatment or until one year after your last elevation in dose. If your enzyme levels increase, your doctor should order more frequent tests. If your liver enzyme levels remain unusually high, your doctor should discontinue your medication.
Avatar n tn Advicor (lovastatin/niacin extended-release), Simcor (simvastatin/niacin extended-release), and Vytorin (simvastatin/ezetimibe). The new labels will warn patients about: Memory loss and mental confusion. Some people taking statin drugs have experienced these brain-related effects. These effects usually have not been serious and went away when patients stopped using the drugs. Risk of high blood sugar. Risk of being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
428155 tn?1203688894 My doctor wants me to start Simvastatin - Zocor - to lower my cholesterol. I have very high blood pressure. After reading all the side-effects of statins, I am afraid to start using this drug. All the forums I have read about this are filled with people warning others away from statins because of the terrible side effects. I cannot find any forums where people actually say they were helped by statin drugs and did not have bad side-effects. Can anybody help?
620048 tn?1358018235 I've been taking Zocor for years, then they switched me to Vytorin, which is the same drug with another one added to it. Once in a while some of my liver enzymes are mildly elevated, but I've never noticed a problem that I could readily attribute to either pill. I do remember that I'm supposed to watch for muscle aches, I think. Maybe I'll go read up on it again, just to be sure. Do talk to your doc about it, regardless.
Avatar n tn I currently take 150mg of Zocor per day. Recently i have developed a cough, which I can deal with but when I cough I get pain shooting though my head. It takes a few minutes to go away and then things are find. Should I be worried.
Avatar m tn Thanks for your reply. I have been on simvastatin for about 2 months. Neurontin I just started taking for 30 days which I had stopped taking due to remission from TN pain. I m at present on Erythromycin for sore throat and as it interact with simvastatin the dr has asked to stop taking it until I complete the course of antibiotic.
Avatar f tn t read anything that says the Zocor was responsible, just conjecture that it may be based on some Internet research. Zocor which is merely simvastatin is very safe and the incidence of side effects very low, but some will be affected differently than others.
Avatar m tn As with any medication, side effects are possible with simvastatin (Zocor®), including problems with the liver. For people taking simvastatin, liver problems can include: • An increase in liver enzymes • Hepatitis, which is an inflammation of the liver that can cause tiredness or a general feeling of illness • Jaundice, or a yellowing of the skin or eyes that can occur due to liver damage • A fatty change in the liver • Cirrhosis • Hepatoma, which is a type of liver cancer.
Avatar f tn Advicor (lovastatin/niacin extended-release), Simcor (simvastatin/niacin extended-release), and Vytorin (simvastatin/ezetimibe).
Avatar f tn Is it possible to reduce without taking something like zocor, just quitting smoking? Rather quit smoking than stay on zocor. How concerned should I be?
Avatar f tn Thanks everyone for your responses. I guess I've been in denial about my health. I waited a while before getting on my bp meds bcuz I didn't think I could possibly have high bp at my age. I'm under 40, not overweight, I don't drink or smoke. I think there is a bullseye on my back that I'm not aware of. My other 5 sisters are in good health. I took my first cholesterol med last night. It's called Simvastatin which is a generic for Zocor.
Avatar n tn I have been on Lipitor and simvastatin (Zocor) I have no major health problems, eat a good diet, only a few pounds too many, not enough exercise. What can I do to lower my LDL number?
1846163 tn?1331048748 alfuzosin (Uroxatral), cisapride (Propulsid), pimozide (Orap), atorvastatin (Lipitor, Caduet), lovastatin (Mevacor, Altoprev, Advicor) or simvastatin (Zocor, Simcor, Vytorin), midazolam (Versed), triazolam (Halcion), sildenafil (Revatio) or tadalafil (Adcirca) when used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, St. John's wort, rifampin (Rifadin, Rifater, Rifamate), ergonovine, ergotamine (Ergomar, Cafergot, Migergot), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E.
Avatar n tn Just to report in on this, I was put on Zocor 10mg for high cholesterol back in 2009. This was when I was getting about 6,000 PVCs per day. For some unexplained reason, my PVCs have come back to basically normal since then. I have since gone off the zocor about 3 months ago due to lower back and glute pains that I just couldn't shake. Pretty sure it was the zocor. Since coming off it, my PVCs have increased a bit. The lower back pain is now gone.
Avatar n tn Generally, if you experience muscle weakness as a side effect of Lipitor (atorvastatin), other statins will produce similar effects, so that eliminates the use of Zocor (simvastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin) etc. After statin therapy fails or is not tolerated, it is normal to try ezetimibe (Zetia), which you said did not work. The use of colesevelam (WelChol) is not high, and is often the 'last ditch effort' to lower cholesterol.
315318 tn?1353251800 You may want to ask your doctor about a less powerful statin than Crestor to use along with a fenofibrate, perhaps a generic Zocor (simvastatin) at the same dosage. This may lessen the side effect. The easiest way to control TGLs is to eliminate empty carbs from your diet like breads, pastas and sugars. Also, if you drink, stop as alcohol metabolizes as sugar and has an large impact on serum TGLs.
519736 tn?1253986826 My husband was prescribed generic lipitor about a year ago. Prior to this he was advised to use Slo Niacin. When he began the lipitor, his dr. did not tell him to stop taking the Slo Niacin. He has been taking them together daily. Last week he experienced more frequent, loose bowels, but did not feel "sick"..This went away and he started to have muscle pain in the chest and upper back and his legs..that began 3 days ago. The muscle pain is preventing him from getting any sleep.
Avatar f tn told me that my total cholesterol was 303!!! So they instantly prescribed me 20mg of Simvastatin. With in a matter of 7-10 days I was nearly unable to run my legs became so heavy. Lead Legs! I lost all desire to run, slept all the time and was worthless at work - because I was constantly tired. I even had co-workers say to me "what happened to you at Houston - ever since you got back your not the same." I felt miserable.
Avatar f tn Research shows that 61 out of every 1000 patients on 80mg of simvastatin develop muscle problems. I do believe the half life for Simvastatin is quite short, 5 hours or less. If you take 80mg, then 5hours later only 40mg will remain. Another 5 hours only 20mg. So after 24 hours there will only be around 2-3mg in your body which is top up time.
1603923 tn?1297767967 My Father ,74 years age, a known patient of diabetes , hypertention ,was diaganosed with 3vd(3 vessel disease ) about two years ago and had cabag(open heart surgery) , he is feeling ok , other than palpitations and heart murmering during exertion or in rest some times.

Avatar n tn What were your wife's other numbers? Were her triglycerides running high along with her LDL? What about her HDL, the good cholesterol levels? You can get a copy of her labs to look at the numbers. Her total cholesterol numbers look good but if the other numbers are out of balance that could be the reason her Dr prescribed meds. I'm surprised your Dr put you on meds.
