Effective in June 2011 the FDA recommends limiting the dose of simvastatin to a maximum dose of 40 mg, with the exception of patients already taking simvastatin 80 mg daily for a period of greater than 12 months who have not developed any myalgia side effects. The FDA make this restriction because at the highest dose of simvastatin 80 mg daily the incidence of serious myopathy was higher than using other available statins.
Crestor is a statin (rosuvastatin calcium) only, Vytorin is a statin (Simvastatin) with Zetia (ezetimibe). Statins work by controlling the production of cholesterol in your liver while Zetia works by preventing cholesterol to be absorbed in your digestive system.
Of the two, Crestor is the stronger of the two. In addition, recent trials have shown that adding Zetia does not improve the performance of Vytorin over Simvastatin alone.
Warnings and Precautions
Because simvastatin can affect the liver, it is used with caution in people who drink more than a moderate amount of alcohol or have a history of liver disease.
Simvastatin is not recommended for people with liver disease or high liver enzymes before treatment begins.
Possible Symptoms of Liver Problems
Several symptoms can occur in someone who develops liver problems while taking simvastatin.
I have been taking simvastatin for three weeks since having a Tia but have also had a flu like cold for ten days , I am still having aching flu like pains which I would have thought would have passed by now . I don't know if this is a side effect of the drug I'm taking 40mg a day but feel really achy will this pass .

because both 300mg and 100mg of sim are more than FDA approved sim dose (max dose 80mg), the only safe dose would be 50mg sim+0.5mg etv, what do you think?

There are a lot of other antibiotics that don't have these nasty side affects and are safe to use, although when taking to many antibiotics your stystem could become immune to them and when you have an infection they don't do much good.
was on liptor 20 but not liking it so two weeks ago started simvastatin 30 to see if more tolerable b/c my research said it had the lowest rate of side effects of the potent statins. numbers were normal on 20 lipitor but are now alt 68 ast 54.
I think they are saying these effects are in the realm of possibility because although it isn't clear exactly how Copaxone does what it does, it does alter part of immune system function. Remember, it's an immunomodulator. (Don't know if it makes you feel any better but there are plenty more drugs approved long before anybody understands the why or how of their success.
As a matter of fact, she began taking the Simvastatin 20 mg a few years ago because her insurance no longer covered her usual cholesterol medication so the doctor had to switch her to Simvastatin. I remember when she first had to switch to Simvastatin, she complained about how her stomach hurt and how it gave her headaches. Since then she has just accepted it and taken the medication. Perhaps the Simvastatin is taking its toll on her.
