I am being met with resistance and am concerned that the attending physician is completely in the dark about several studies regarding the negative effects of these particular drugs in elderly patients with dementia, or any helpful alternatives. Are there any alternatives to using antipsychotic medications in this case? I have a hard time believing he is being kept in this state for other than that it makes him less work for the staff. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes but he needs Risperdone to bring him to normal level and later Depokoate to keep his mood stable.Risperdone has numerous serious side effects especially in elderly patients so is kept only till required.It will tapered very slowly over 4-6 weeks so generally symptoms wont return.It can be restarted by his psychiatrist if they do so dont worry.

I just started Invegra 3mg daily which is the new drug in lieu of Risperdal so I will be curious as to how it works. Supposedly, it is just like Risperdal but much more tolerated with less side effects. Medications can easily interact and sometimes medications that have been fine for a long time all of a sudden aren't. A gerentologist probably is the best place to look for answers. When my mom was alive, we had a few kinks with her medications.

My concern is that our friend seems to be caught in a downward spiral of overmedication, in which new drugs treat side effects of old drugs, but create new side effects. If its akathesia or extra pyramidal side effects then your psychiatrist could titrate the anti-psychotics and add a side effect pill to control it. If its tardive dyskinesia such as I have, which can emerge in a variety of forms including tardive dystonia then they would switch you over to Clozaril immediately as it can be very dangerous in advanced forms (such as I have).

The neurologist put him on risperdal. I just read horrible side effects, like breasts on boys. Is there a more " beginner" drug? Since we see a neurologist instead of child psychologist, I am fearful he doesn't know as much about behavioral medications. Sorry so long.

Abilify can be activating. That is one side effect some people experience. It is less likely statistically than Risperdal to cause this effect but all (currently available) antipsychotics have this potential. See if it improves and if not speak to your doctor about what to do at that point. It would take some time for that effect to pass if you changed medications.

As an antipsychotic yes. But I needed a mood stabilizer as well. But then again I have schizoaffective. I did have a cousin though who as a teenager was diagnosed with anorexia and it was connected to OCD and she stablized on Risperdal. Risperdal does have mood stabilization properties though and is approved for that usage so see what happens.

Risperdal could be causing side effects.It caused a lot of side effects in me and when I got better I had my Pdoc taper it to 0.5 mg and will soon stop it.

Okay, let me ask this a different way? I want to get off the saphris because of the side effects but am afraid of being suicidal again. I'd heard Risperdal is used as a "booster" med for people being on anti-depressants. I take 40mg citalopram (generic version of celexa) and 225 mg Venlafaxine (for effexor) each day, then went to 5mg saphris in am and bedtime. I wondered about using Risperdal hoping not to have the same side effects.

The symptoms you describe could come from Risperdal, in part, but more likely are the outcropping of the underlying anxiety..you should not stop your medication without sorting this out with your doctor.

"Mood stabilizer" is actually a really bad term because so many researchers have been using different definitions. To some, it means anything that takes out mania, including lithium, anticonvulsants, AAPs, etc. To others, it's only the anticonvulsants that help with bipolar, and they keep AAPs out. Or pick pretty much any permutation of that.
