Litium did give me a hyperactive thyroid condition. The med I was given for that has a side effect of osteoporosis in the lumbar in long term use (Synthroid). I ended up with litium toxicity a few years back because diuretics will cause that. As you know caffine is a diuretic (soft drinks) - which most kiddo's I know tend to drink. I would not allow litium to be given to my child; not going through what I have with it. I have a son who is ADHD.

I am currently on 40mg of lexapro and my therapist prescribed 80mg of geodon once a day. I took the geodon one night and the next am I was extremely sedated. I had blurred vision, slurred speech and I felt like my body had lead in it and it was hard to move. I stopped taking it and after a week I still feel spacey and have some tingling in my hands and feet. Could I be having these feeling because I had such a strong reaction to the med? I am afraid these symptoms are permanent.

my wife and i are noticing aggressive behavior,and paranoia(along with nhs therapist)she is currently in hospital(acute care)and docs and therapists seem to be ignoring this and are contemplating release after suicidal/homicidal threats,has anyone experienced or heard of such aggression from geodon?i did find side effects on web that confirm this could happen,but seems doctors cant find or have ever heard of this? can anyone shed light please!!!!!

If you have a problem with temporary movement disorders (extra pyramidal side effects) from Geodon or any antipsychotic they can give you a side effect pill for that. Informing yourself of the potential side effects of medications and more importantly how they help is a good thing. I take 40mg Geodon and Lamictal. I do feel so much better,but i was wondering more about the Geodon side effects. I feel alittle more anixous im wondering if it is the Geodon.

There are many alternatives available that do not cause these side effects and remember that everyone is different, so side effects are often different for each person.So another medication may not be as difficult for you and sometimes initial side effects fade after taking the medication for awhile. Like all antipsychotics and medications in general Geodon takes an extended period of time (your psychiatrist would have to tell you exactly how long) for a person to be able to tell whether it works and get used to the side effects. However it generally is able to start to work more quickly than some other antipsychotics such as Zyprexa and Seroquel which take a long time to build up to a proper blood level (all this I was directly informed and remember from taking it).

My doctor suggested switching to the new med Saphris but I researched it and found that it has the same type of side effects and negative long term effects as Geodon. I know that most anti-psychotics, which I only take for Bipolar II are alike. Don't want to take any but want help with my ultra-rapid mood cycling. Not against meds but am well aware of the irresponsibility and unindividualized treatment that can occur. Any suggestions?

I was on Geodon after Abilify made me gain weight. The Geodon , for me, didn't work for bipolar symptoms but I am a diificult case. Abilify was the only med that worked. However, I did loose weight on Geodon and for the 2st couple weeks had an usdet stomach. If this drug works for you, and you know it's trial error for us anyway, I think you'll be please with the lack of side effects. I didn't even know I was on it after a week.

Only bad side affect I have heard and experienced first hand is the appetite problem. I gained 7lbs in first month of taking and heard of another lady gaining as much as 50lbs from taking abilify.

I began taking atypical antipsychotics just over a year ago, and stopped just over a month ago. I have been on Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel, Zyprexa, and Geodon, in that order. Risperdal caused me to have a grand mal seizure. I was only on it for a month or so, and I was taking a fairly low dose (I don't remember precisely how much). Neither Abilify and Seroquel lasted long because of unpleasant side effects (nausea and twitching/akathesia).

All of what I was feeling was a side effect from the Geodon called akathisia. I was not manic the restless feeling and the anxiety was a result of the askathsia.

Well, I am no doctor, but it does not take a genius to figure out that when all of these side effects happen within weeks of starting this medication, that the medication is the cause. Abilify has a lot of information on the web about side effects and a quick google may work well, always remember that side effects are not all going to happen to you or even likely - Abilify is well liked and fairly safe compared to some of the AP and AC drugs like Geodon and Risperdal.

m definitely going to look into tardive dyskinesia. Also, the Geodon side effect of agitation and irritability, sounds promising. If only he would let us talk to his doctors. He is also uber paranoid, about many things. Thank you so much for your insight, I knew I could count on this site.

Have to be honest I was only on that for a while because it was activating and kept me up at night. I also had a problem with heart palpatations (I believe everyone has to get an EEG first as I did) so I had to discontinue it and change back to a previous medication with my psychiatrist's superivision. But some people have done well on it so it depends. It is often activating though so if you have that problem you could ask your psychiatrist if you could take it in the morning.

For me the side effects of bipolar are far worse than the side effects of the medications. For me I regained a life taking meds and I appreciate that life. Knowing what I do though, if I had cyclothymia or was just mildly depressed at baseline I wouldn't take them. But I was nutbar crazy so we needed to use the good stuff.
