This is the first medication they suggested to us. She seems to be doing really well in school but the side effects at home are becoming hard for us to handle. SHe has become very nonaffectionate, emotional, withdrawn, and seems to be uninterested in life. She also will not eat at all. She is eating maybe one meal a day. I am wondering if we switch medications, will the side effects be the same/as bad?
I can see being on V and perhaps adderall in the late after noon. Or concerta and ritalin in the late afternoon. Since the Concerta/ritalin are the same type of meds. Same thing for Vyvannse and Adderall.
Point being, why was the V not working for you? What symptoms did you have. I would think that the two could have been over dosing you. Did you ever try just V alone?
Hello, I'm 19 years old and just got diagnosed, as one would say, with ADD/ADHD rather recently. I was given a prescription for Concerta 36mg to be taken daily. This is the third week taking it and I have been noticing some odd side effects. On days when I take it in the morning and don't eat I feel nauseous and generally off, which I was warned about prior so it doesn't worry me as much. However, I have also noticed quite a difference in my mood.
His teacher and myself (my son too) have noticed a postitive change in his work output at school and during homework sessions. Two of the side effects are of great concern to me. My son can't sleep until well after 10:30 pm. (we are trying Melatonin, but haven't found the right dosage). The other side effect that is most troubling is the loss of appetite. When we went to see his specialist, 6 days ago, he'd lost 4.5 lbs (in 40 days).
Things slowly got worse with his behavior and I think our divorce. But he stayed in and out of therapy to no avail. Then last year the ex took him in for the headaches and started pushing the ADHD and the doctor gave him a generic concerta and sumatriptin for the headaches. the concerta helped him tremendously with his work but the headaches havent gotten better.
These are typical side effects froom withdrawls of that type of medication (amphetamine, methylphetamine) or stimulants. If a patient is used to being on a stimulant drug for some time, withdrawing that drug would cause a general slowing down of the body, hence the extreme fatigue, lack of motivation and focus. Your body is going through an increased response of side effects from withdrawl, as you've been of this medication for a year which is why your symptoms may be more exaggerated.
and many people i know whos children have seizues they were told first that there child had add and adhd or at least one of them . I if you look at the side effects Concerta can cause Seizures also. Omega 3-96-9 and Vitamin B6 and B12 can help with learning .
a child shouldn't be on those hard drugs and just think about what those drugs are doing to your childs brain.
Ugh, that really sux. Can't remember whether you've tried Adderall, but it works decently for me, nothing earth-shattering. I really don't like the idea of taking this type of med, though have never had any bad effects from it at all. The only side effect I've had is some appetite suppression, not at all a bad thing for me :-) I generally take it only on PT days or when I have to accomplish stuff involving a lot of physical activity.
I know there are a lot of children that have been told they have add or adhd and autism that where later told they have Seizures. And where on drugs for add and adhd.
How many new the side effects of the drugs they where on could cause Seizures? And didn't find out about having Seizures until they where on these drugs like adderall and Concerta.
side effects were big loss of appetite ended up in the bottom 10% for height and weight for his age, lost almost 3 kg in 8 months. developed tics, throat clearing and a dry cough every 30secs or so, some days worse than others, biting finger nails and ripping skin around nails really bad, became quite nervous and lost confidence in himself.
at night around 6pm-7pm would rebound his behaviour was extreme hyper, loud and totally out of control, could not get him to sleep till 11pm-12pm.

The book as well as any research study will tell you that stimulant therapy does not lead to drug usage in later life. In fact, the percent of kids who do abuse drugs is much higher for those children who were not on stimulant meds (if they have AD/HD).
